Andy Warhol’s After Munch series (1984) represents one of the most compelling intersections between Pop Art and Expressionist Symbolism in 20th century art by reinterpreting some of the renowned Norwegian artist Edvard Munch’s iconic compositions, including The Scream (1893), Madonna (1895–1902), Self-Portrait with Skeleton Arm (1895), and The Brooch (Eva Mudocci) (1903). Warhol transformed these charged images through his signature use of bold synthetic colors, flat graphic surfaces, repetition, and silkscreen techniques, recasting Munch’s deeply personal imagery within the visual language of mass media and consumer culture. Offered together for the first time since 2019, the present auction features Warhol’s most celebrated tributes to Munch from 1984: The Scream, Eva Mudocci, and Madonna and Self-portrait with Skeleton’s Arm (on a single sheet).
The After Munch project emerged following Warhol’s visit to a major Munch retrospective in New York in 1982 at Galleri Bellman, although his admiration for the Norwegian artist dated back years earlier, informed by trips to Oslo’s National Gallery and Munch Museum in the 1970s. Originally intended as a traditional numbered print edition commissioned by Galleri Bellman, Warhol’s After Munch was never formally published after a dispute between the gallery owners caused the collaboration to collapse in the mid-1980s. As a result, the works survive only as rare trial proofs printed by Rupert Jason Smith, New York, and unique color variants in which Warhol experimented with vivid palettes, stencils, and silkscreen techniques to transform Munch’s emotionally resonant imagery into striking Pop-inflected reinventions. Warhol retained ownership of many of these rare prints, which have since become highly sought-after by collectors.

At first glance, Warhol and Munch appear to embody radically different artistic personalities: Warhol cultivated the persona of a detached, fashionable Pop celebrity, while Munch has long been associated with introspection, loneliness, and existential anguish. Yet art historians have increasingly emphasized the psychological and creative affinities between the two. Beneath Warhol’s deliberately artificial public image was a shy and deeply private individual who may have recognized aspects of himself in Munch’s melancholic worldview. Warhol’s selection of Self-portrait with Skeleton Arm as one of the central works of the series suggests a particular fascination with mortality, self-image, and vulnerability—subjects that also permeated Warhol’s own work following his near-fatal shooting in 1968. Both artists were preoccupied with themes of death, fame, emotional instability, and the construction of identity.
The series also reveals surprising technical parallels between the two artists. Munch was an innovative and experimental printmaker who explored unusual color combinations, textures, and repeated variations of the same image, much as Warhol later would through silkscreen repetition and serial production. Warhol’s reinterpretations maintain the recognizable outlines of Munch’s originals while amplifying them through fluorescent palettes, metallic tones, and sharper graphic contrasts. In works such as The Scream, Warhol heightened the image’s already legendary anxiety with jarring neon colors, simultaneously honoring and destabilizing the original composition. Likewise, his reinterpretation of Madonna transformed Munch’s meditative figure into something more confrontational and obliquely erotic, while Eva Mudocci became electrified with vibrant optical energy characteristic of Warhol’s Pop sensibility.

A central theme of After Munch is the commodification of famous images in modern culture. By the 1980s, paintings such as The Scream had become globally recognizable icons reproduced endlessly on posters, souvenirs, and popular merchandise. Warhol understood that masterpieces of art history had entered the same realm of reproducibility and consumption as celebrities, advertisements, and logos—subjects he had long explored throughout his career. In revisiting Munch’s imagery, Warhol was not merely copying great art but examining how cultural meaning changes through repetition and mechanical reproduction. His treatment of Munch parallels earlier appropriations such as his 1963 Mona Lisa series, where canonical masterpieces were transformed into media images detached from their original contexts and elevated into universal cultural symbols.
At the same time, Warhol’s engagement with Munch was less cynical than reverential. Many critics have observed that Warhol’s adaptations restore emotional force to images that had become overly familiar through mass reproduction. By altering scale, color, and visual intensity, he encouraged viewers to encounter these celebrated works anew. Rather than diminishing Munch’s expressive power, Warhol’s versions reveal the visceral affect of the primary sources. The resulting works occupy a fascinating position between winking imitation and sincere ode.
After Munch is now regarded as one of the most unusual and significant projects of Warhol’s late career. The series has been the subject of major exhibitions and scholarly publications exploring the dialogue between the two artists and the broader relationship between modernism and postmodernism. Critics have noted that the collaboration across time between Munch and Warhol collapses traditional distinctions between high art and mass culture, while also revealing shared concerns beneath their stylistic differences. Ultimately, After Munch demonstrates Warhol’s extraordinary ability to reinterpret art history through the lens of contemporary culture, transforming Munch’s haunting Symbolist imagery into a new visual language that remains both emotionally potent and unmistakably Pop.
