Liz stands among the earliest and most compelling printed portraits of Elizabeth Taylor, a subject through which Warhol crystallized his fascination with celebrity, beauty, and the mechanics of mass image production. Executed at a decisive moment in his career, the work reflects the transition from hand-painted imagery to the systematic use of photographic sources and printing techniques that would define his practice.
For his print of actress Elizabeth Taylor, Warhol chose the source image from a publicity photograph of her 1960 film, Butterfield 8. The image is flattened and stylized, with sharply delineated eyes, arched brows, and saturated lips forming a highly controlled visual structure. Warhol’s use of bold, often artificial color intensifies her presence while simultaneously distancing the image from naturalism. The result is neither a traditional portrait nor a purely mechanical reproduction, but a constructed icon: at once immediate and strangely untouchable.

The image of Taylor is tightly cropped and colored with a bright red background that contours Taylor’s thick, dark hair. With this print, Warhol came to realize the power of his simplified, graphic depictions of immeasurable celebrity, fleeting mortality and unrelenting mass-media, thus inspiring his famed depictions of Marilyn Monroe that took on a similar style.
The choice of Elizabeth Taylor is far from incidental. In the early 1960s, she embodied a form of fame that was both glamorous and unstable, shaped by widely publicized relationships and health crises. Andy Warhol recognized in her image a perfect subject for his exploration of repetition and media circulation. In Liz, beauty is not simply celebrated; it is reproduced, amplified, and subtly destabilized. The image becomes a surface onto which the dynamics of celebrity are projected, at once seductive and impersonal. Within Warhol’s oeuvre, Liz occupies a central position alongside his portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy, forming part of a sustained meditation on the construction of public identity. Yet Taylor’s image carries a distinct intensity. Where Monroe often appears fragile and spectral, Taylor is rendered with a sharper, more assertive presence. Warhol does not dissolve her image; he sharpens it into a symbol of enduring visibility.
Unlike many of Warhol’s later print portfolios, Liz was issued as an unnumbered edition of approximately 300 impressions, published by Leo Castelli Gallery and printed by Total Color, New York. This early mode of production reflects a moment before the strict standardization of his editioned prints in the 1970s and 1980s. The absence of numbering, combined with slight variations in impressions, reinforces the tension between reproducibility and individuality that lies at the core of Warhol’s work. Each example belongs to a broader system of repetition, yet retains its own physical specificity. From a market perspective, Liz remains one of the most desirable early Warhol prints. Its combination of an iconic subject, early date, and publication by Leo Castelli situates it at the intersection of historical importance and collector demand.
“It would be very glamorous
to be reincarnated as a great big ring on Liz Taylor’s finger.”

Ultimately, Liz is not merely a portrait of Elizabeth Taylor; it is a portrait of the image itself. Warhol presents a face already known to millions, then reframes it through the logic of repetition and print. In doing so, he reveals both the power and the instability of celebrity, transforming a familiar likeness into a lasting emblem of modern visual culture.

One of only five or six printed with a white background
(aside from the edition of approximately 300 printed with a red background)
This extremely rare version of Andy Warhol’s Liz is one of only 4 or 5 impressions known in this color combination. In contrast to the editioned work, the pure white background here recalls Warhol’s first explorations of Liz for an exhibition in 1963 at the Ferus Gallery, Los Angeles. Working on a pre-prepared canvas sprayed with silver paint Warhol produced 10 Silver Liz paintings which were shown together at the gallery, alongside other subjects from the silver screen such as Elvis and Jackie Kennedy. The monochrome movie star images are recognized as Warhol’s most powerful evocation of the fleeting nature of celebrity. This Liz proof on white paper, one of only a handful given by Leo Castelli to close friends and collaborators in 1964, offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of the artist’s most emblematic images.
