Sitting Bull is based on an archival picture of Sitting Bull, who was the Chief of the Lakota Sioux. This print is Warhol’s homage to the Indian leader, whose resistance against the violation of sovereignty by the white settlers mounted an overwhelmingly successful defense at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.

Indeed, the US Army, led by General Custer, an infamous leader of Southern forces during the Civil War, suffered a colossal defeat at this battle. Warhol employs his trademark whimsy in pigment and form to represent the Indian Leader. In this print, Sitting Bull glows with regal authority with a stoic pause and placid facial expression posed in a moment of tranquil reflection rather than in combat. The vivid coloring and the highlighting lines gives a modern twist to the iconic photograph and illuminate the leader with the essence of spectral wisdom.
