Andy Warhol’s Moonwalk depicts one of the most important moments of the 20th century. Using Neil Armstrong’s photograph of Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon, Warhol, for the very first time, turns this historic event into a Pop Art masterpiece. Though one might expect this work to have been done at the time of the moon landings in 1969, the prints were actually made in 1987, just a few months before Warhol’s death. It seems as though this subject appeared to Warhol to be important only after the fact, almost two decades later, when he had reached maturity in his career. And while it depicts a profound moment in the history of humanity Warhol adds his playful spin on it, tinting the iconic white astronaut suit with tones of yellow or pink and giving the surface of the moon various tones of colors.

Introduction
The prints were intended to be part of a larger series titled TV which would include other key moments from America’s history such as a still of Martin Luther King Jr giving his famous ‘I have a Dream’ speech and the Beatles’ first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. However, Warhol’s untimely death from surgery complications meant that Moonwalk is the only print that was completed, making this an extremely sought-after work in his oeuvre.
“When I got my first television set, I stopped caring so much about having close relationships.”

Though TV was to focus on the influence and history of television, Warhol’s source image did not come from a television broadcast. Instead, Warhol amalgamated two photographs taken by Neil Armstrong of his fellow pioneering astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin Jr. walking on the moon for the first time in 1969 during the Apollo 11 mission. From one photo, Warhol extracted the American flag planted into the surface of the moon, and from the other, Aldrin standing facing Armstrong’s camera, his photographer and part of the Lunar Module “Eagle” reflected in his visor. In Warhol’s portrayal, these reflections resemble the form of the initials “A.W.” – while Warhol did not get the chance to sign the Moonwalk prints before his passing, he certainly left his mark upon them.

Moonwalk demonstrates Warhol’s unfailing talent for spotting iconic images, and adds his own unique touch, drawing over the original image as well as overlaying it with bright blocks of color that make it unmistakably a work of Pop Art. Using a freeze-frame image originally broadcast to millions of viewers, the astronaut Buzz Aldrin stands next to the American flag he has placed on the moon. Warhol returns to this seminal moment through the technique of screenprint. Combining a palette of neon colors, and fluorescent outlines, he updates the original image to reflect the flourishing visual culture of the 1980’s. Warhol’s initials can be discerned across Aldrin’s visor; a typical ironic touch by the artist who thereby adds his mark to the famous image, just as the American flag was added to the surface of another world.
The Apollo 11 mission’s victory over the Soviet Union as a part of the Space Race conjures the idea of American exceptionalism, a notion that thrived in the 1960s and was further explored by Warhol in his Cowboys and Indians portfolio, unraveling how this mentality manifests in the country’s romanticized idea of the “Wild West.” The combination of a neon palette and fluorescent outlines utilized in Moonwalk updates the original images of Aldrin – and thus the conception of America’s intrinsic superiority – to reflect the distinct visual culture of the 1980s. In approaching the subject of the moon landing nearly twenty years after the initial feat, Warhol solidifies the timeless appeal of the monumental achievement and the lasting impact of the event on the American psyche.
