For Andy Warhol, Marilyn Monroe was the perfect interplay of personal tragedy and beauty. The world was captivated by the actress; newspapers provided access to her life through a steady stream of front-page articles and black and white photos. Indeed, Monroe possessed a tragic romance balanced with a striking naivete that gave her a magnetic pull. Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn) captures a juxtaposition of allure and sadness that characterized the life of the actress; the Technicolor wash over the black and white structure of her visage is applied as make-up, masking her true identity, yet memorializing her forever.

Introduction
Shortly after her death in August of 1962, Warhol cropped a publicity still of the actress, blowing her image up and using it to create his silkscreens. With Marilyn’s image everywhere, her tragically short life was encapsulated by the likeness Warhol burned into his screens.
“Beauties in photographs are different from beauties in person. It must be hard to be a model, because you’d want to be like the photograph of you, and you can’t ever look that way – and so you start to copy the photograph.”

In November of 1962, Andy Warhol exhibited his candy-colored paintings of Marilyn Monroe at Eleanor Ward’s Stable Gallery in New York, to great critical and commercial success that skyrocketed him to fame as a Pop Art superstar. Five years later, as the Factory was in full swing and his celebrity status reached around the globe, Warhol again selected Marilyn Monroe as the inaugural image for a new print portfolio that would be published through his own company, “Factory Additions.”

Warhol’s source image for all the Marilyn portraits.
Warhol had been screen-printing onto paper as early as 1962, but it wasn’t until he established Factory Additions in 1967, that he systematized the process. A full printmaking operation, Factory Additions published Marilyn’s image in two hundred and fifty folios, each containing ten differently colored Marilyn screen-prints on paper. Marilyn’s color combinations were selected by Warhol’s friend David Whitney, pending Warhol’s approval.
“In August ‘62 I started doing silkscreens… I wanted something stronger that gave more of an assembly line effect… when Marilyn Monroe happened to die that month, I got the idea to make screens of her beautiful face – the first Marilyns.”

Both homage to her life and a critique of the celebrity culture that triggered her fall, Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn) became one of Warhol’s most iconic and illustrious series. Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn) celebrates its subject’s life and glamour, but discreetly hints at the ephemerality of fame and fortune, an effect deepened by the viewer’s knowledge of Monroe’s tragic end. Marilyn Monroe is therefore the perfect encapsulation of the spirit of an age; a candy-colored memento mori.
Upon close examination of the full set together, one notices slight differences in registration– at times the subject’s features are coherent and properly aligned; while in other instances they are fragmented and askew. So instead of the same form repeated over and over, Warhol exploited the possibility of finding difference in sameness. Moreover, the use of intense flat but vibrant color often printed off-register heightens the sense of artificiality even beyond what he achieved in his paintings. With the Marilyn portfolio, Warhol both elevated Marilyn’s iconic persona and at the same time made her more accessible to the viewer and to the public.

Typical to his working fashion, Warhol often specifically created works to coincide with gallery or museum exhibitions. In this case, he did so in preparation for an upcoming survey of his work at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. The exhibition was conceived as an alternative to the traditional retrospective, and its opening in February of 1968 was quite spectacular. It included Warhol’s cow wallpaper, five hundred Brillo boxes and several large-scale transparent polyethylene “clouds.” Twenty of the Marilyn prints were included, lining a back wall of the museum in full-blown Technicolor.

Published in 1967, Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn) was the first of the Factory Additions projects and it has since remained among the most celebrated of all of Warhol’s graphic productions. The Marilyn prints were the first technically complex prints the artist made. Using the same publicity image as his earlier paintings, the set of ten works were printed in a wide variety of color combinations, from strikingly muted blacks, silvers and greys, to brilliant—at times neon—pinks, greens and yellows.

Auction Market Overview
The recent auction performance of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn prints confirms the series’ position as one of the most liquid and structurally resilient segments of the post-war print market. Across 2023–2025, sell-through rates remain consistently high (86–95%), with annual turnover hovering around USD 3.5–3.7 million for individual prints alone. This level of absorption, even amid broader market selectivity, signals sustained demand driven by both seasoned Warhol collectors and new entrants seeking canonical imagery with proven price transparency.
Auction Summary

A key takeaway is the clear hierarchy within the 1967 portfolio. While all images trade above the USD 100,000 threshold, certain plates—most notably Marilyn (F&S II.31)—function as market leaders, combining strong visual recognition with repeated auction exposure. Their ability to set successive records without saturation indicates a mature but still ascending price structure. By contrast, secondary images within the series continue to recalibrate upward, benefiting from the halo effect of headline results while remaining comparatively accessible, a dynamic that supports depth rather than speculation.
RECORD AUCTION PRICE BY MARILYN

Complete sets occupy a distinct, almost autonomous tier. The new record achieved in 2025 underscores the institutional logic behind set acquisitions: rarity by aggregation, curatorial coherence, and long-term scarcity. Condition sensitivity remains decisive—as illustrated by the sharp price differential between comparable sets—yet the upward trajectory from 2023 to 2025 suggests that high-quality ensembles are increasingly perceived less as print multiples and more as modular masterpieces.
Overall, the data points to a market that is not overheating but methodically repricing quality. The Marilyn prints continue to operate as a benchmark within Warhol’s graphic work: highly traded, closely watched, and remarkably disciplined. For collectors, the message is clear—selectivity matters, but the series as a whole remains one of the safest entry points into blue-chip Pop, where cultural saturation and market clarity work in rare alignment.
The price chronology for Marilyn (F&S II.22) offers a textbook illustration of how a secondary image within Warhol’s 1967 Marilyn portfolio has progressively re-rated over the past decade. From a modest GBP 60,000 in 2016 to repeated results hovering between USD 165,000 and USD 300,000 in the 2021–2025 window, the trajectory is neither erratic nor speculative. It reflects a slow but steady recalibration driven by cumulative comparables, not by a single outlier event.

What is particularly telling is the price compression at higher levels. After the 2022 auction record at Sotheby’s New York (USD 302,400, aside), subsequent results remain firmly elevated, even when condition, framing, or regional market differences are factored in. The 2024–2025 sales—whether in London, Japan, or New York—cluster within a relatively tight band, suggesting that the market has reached a consensus range for this image. This is a sign of maturity: volatility has given way to price memory.

The distinction between standard edition impressions and asides is also increasingly well understood by bidders. Asides continue to command a premium, but the gap is no longer exponential; instead, it is rational and measurable. This narrowing spread indicates a collector base that is becoming more educated, less dazzled by nomenclature alone, and more attentive to overall quality and market positioning.
In broader terms, Marilyn (F&S II.22) exemplifies how the Warhol print market rewards consistency over spectacle. While it does not carry the visual dominance of II.31 or the graphic punch of II.24, it benefits directly from the gravitational pull of the series as a whole. For collectors, this image has effectively transitioned from “entry Marilyn” to established core holding—less about chasing records, more about owning a stabilized fragment of Pop history by Andy Warhol.

Signed and annotated ‘Wow! Holly Solomon’ in pencil on the reverse by Holly Solomon
Holly Solomon (1934–2002) became involved in the contemporary art scene in the early 1960s. Her academic background was not primarily in the visual arts, but rather in theater, her first love. She studied acting at Vassar and Sarah Lawrence College and minored in art history. Discouraged by her attempts to become a professional actress, she turned her focus on supporting contemporary art. She would eventually, in 1975, found the famous Holly Solomon Gallery in New York, where she represented some of the most important artists of the 20th century including Joan Mitchell, Gordon Matta-Clark, Laurie Anderson, Nam June Paik and William Wegman, among others. The present lot is signed and annotated by Holly Solomon on the reverse and is emblematic of the close personal relationship between Solomon and Warhol.
“… I asked Andy to do my portrait. We went to Broadway and 47th Street, where they had this photobooth. Andy met me there, and we had a bunch of quarters. He was very particular about which booth. We tried a whole bunch of them… We finally decided on a booth. Andy took a few pictures, he stood there with me for a little bit and then he left me on my own. So I did the pictures all by myself. It helped being private and he understood that, too… Actually, if you’re in a photobooth for a long time it gets pretty boring… I got so bored that I started to really act in them. I was a student then of Lee Strasberg, so I started to do all these acting exercises… Fifty dollars is a lot in a photobooth!”
Holly Solomon, on the photobooth sitting that produced Warhol’s portrait of her.

The complete series Marilyn, consisting of 10 screenprints in different color variations, was acquired by the founder of the legendary denim brand Gul & Blå, Lars Knutsson, and his wife Maria Knutsson directly from Andy Warhol. Warhol was in Stockholm in connection with his first major retrospective exhibition at the Moderna Museet. When he visited Gul & Blå’s store, he was captivated by their pop-inspired fashion and convinced them to exchange clothes for the iconic Marilyn motif, which ultimately led to the entire series of 10 color schemes ending up in the possession of Lars and Maria Knutsson. The aesthetics and store decor were a major part of Gul & Blå’s brand, and the series was intended to be displayed on a wall in the store. Each piece in the series was numbered 6/250, but in order for them to fit together, some of them were trimmed, including the present work…

Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn), 1967
Screen-print in colors on wove paper
Signed in blue ink Andy Warhol and inscribed to Leo and Proof (lower left)
With the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board inkstamp and annotated A128.999 (on the verso)
A trial proof in a unique color combination aside from the regular edition of 250
The present work is a trial proof, created at the same time as the set of ten screenprints from 1967, the most celebrated of all of the artist’s graphic productions. It is printed in a unique color combination that differs entirely from the palettes seen in the final portfolio and in this proof, unlike other Marilyn prints, a second color has not been applied to Marilyn’s lips and shirt, creating a stark contrast with the rest of the image. While the hues in this work are more muted than many of the neons used in the published prints, the effect is still other worldly, the juxtaposition heightening the sense of mask-like artificiality, capturing Marilyn’s immortal beauty and offering it up for perpetual consumption. Warhol signed the print on the recto (published editions were signed on the verso), dedicated the work “to Leo” and gifted it to the legendary gallerist Leo Castelli, who in 1964 had invited Andy Warhol to exhibit with him.
