Warhol’s Flash Series features Teletypes (“news flashes”) from the day of the Kennedy Assassination and images that explore how the event was covered by the media. Endlessly enthralled by celebrity, consumerism and advertising, Warhol depicts this event through the critical lens of news as commodity; even our most harrowing tragedies become banal and innocuous when made a headline and we, in turn, are made consumers of a narrative shaped by mass media.

Introduction
President John F. Kennedy was shot dead on the 22nd of November at 12:30pm. The shock of his assassination reverberated around the world and led to a frenzy of media coverage. In Flash – November 22, 1963, Andy Warhol crops, collages, and oversaturates a selection of the countless images that the media inundated the public with. Together, Warhol’s eleven screenprints form an erratic storyline that mirrors the real-time effect of developing news. As snippets of information, or “newsflashes”, emerge, the sequence of events is haphazardly pieced together. However, these images are so deeply etched into both the American and global consciousness that viewers already know all the gory details; we can instantly recognize the shadowy red flash of the assassin Lee Harvey Oswald’s face, and we need no explanation for the blurry grey bullet-riddled presidential seal. Warhol’s technique of defamiliarization does not make these images unrecognizable. Instead, their surreal re-presentation encourages us to critically examine our own desensitization to violence, the sensationalism of the media, and our collective memory.

“When President Kennedy was shot that fall, I heard the news over the radio while I was alone painting in my studio. I don’t think I missed a stroke. I wanted to know what was going on out there, but that was the extent of my reaction. I’d been thrilled about having Kennedy as president; he was handsome, young, smart — but it didn’t bother me that much that he was dead. What bothered me was the way television and radio were programming everybody to feel so sad. It seemed like no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t get away from the thing.”

Out of the eleven screenprints, six are of President John F. Kennedy’s face. Though he appears in different forms, the effect is always dramatic and emotionally charged. In one work, the blurred image of JFK on television is rendered in ominous purple and black – the traditional colours of mourning. In another, his face is dematerialized, its shadow barely visible on an almost completely black sheet. This illusory image is like an imprint seared into our memory that appears in a flash when we close our eyes. JFK is often portrayed in shades of vibrant bloody red and on one occasion Warhol even provocatively entwines his face with Lee Harvey Oswald’s profile. The subject matter of the other five works in the series includes the murder weapon, the presidential seal, Lee Harvey Oswald, the building from which the bullet was fired, and the newly widowed Jaqueline Kennedy.

Each of Warhol’s screenprints is accompanied by a page of Teletype text, which sequentially report the events during and after the assassination. For example, the first line of the Teletype text which accompanies a closely cropped ghostly image of a smiling JFK in tones of grey and white reads, “The President was killed by a bullet through the brain fired as he rode in a motorcade through downtown Dallas.” Warhol also used the front page of the New York World Telegram for November 22, 1963, as the cover for Flash; the headline reads “PRESIDENT SHOT DEAD”. Over the text Warhol has superimposed stylised metallic flower cut outs which operate both as a symbol of mourning, and as a memento mori – a reminder of the fragility of life and the unwavering presence of death.

In a striking departure from the expected seriality of the prints and paintings, Warhol produced Flash -November 32, 1963 (II.32 – 42), a 1968 portfolio of eleven prints that extended his earlier interest in the assassination of John F. Kennedy and is related to the paintings and prints of Jackie Kennedy. Ready-made images, fragmented and non- linear, are joined by words that recount the story of Kennedy’s murder through the news photos capturing the event and the Teletype report announcing the tragedy to the world. The unexpected colors make the event more surreal than real. Though this portfolio comes close in structure to the illustrated books Warhol produced throughout the 1950s, it has an affinity with later more abstract works. One particular print (II.32), in black and gray inks, virtually dematerializes Kennedy’s face, a transformation that results in an afterimage, or imprint left on the brain. The portfolio’s cover is based on the front page of the New York World Telegram for November 22, the day of Kennedy’s assassination, and is overlaid with flowers. Ironically, in 1968, an assassination attempt was made on Warhol’s life by Valerie Solans, a writer and activist, and he was hospitalized for two months.
