Warhol once famously stated, “I think having land and not ruining it is the most beautiful art that anybody could ever want to own.” The artist was true to his word, owning a beachfront property in Montauk, Long Island and undeveloped land in Colorado. The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts donated Warhol’s 15 acres of outstanding protected beachfront in Montauk to the Nature Conservancy in 1992. The purpose of the donation was to promote the visual arts and preserve this environmentally important site. Warhol voiced his interest in ecological issues such as beach erosion in conversation with prominent collectors and activists Ronald and Frayda Feldman, leading to the Endangered Species commission. In 1986 Warhol went on to collaborate with Kurt Benirschke on Vanishing Animals, a book combining art and science in an effort to bring attention to lesser-known endangered animals.

Introduction

In 1983, Andy Warhol was commissioned to do a series with an environmental and humanitarian intent, following a wave of awareness caused by the enactment of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, which defined endangered species as a humanitarian issue. Warhol, known as a lover of animals, was approached by environmental activists and philanthropists Ronald and Frayda Feldman to execute the series with support from their art gallery in New York. The Endangered Species by Andy Warhol is a group of 10 paintings focusing on a single animal from the endangered species list and resulted in a portfolio of 10 screen-prints. Warhol portrayed those animals with his signature style, equating them with his famed subjects of the past and hence drawing attention to their individual importance and critical condition. Many of those sympathetic to environmental causes were moved by the global selection of Warhol’s animals, and the intent to raise awareness on preserving habitats.

Endangered Species was exhibited at the Museum of Natural History in New York following publication in addition to other natural history museums throughout the United States. Warhol personally selected the museum’s Reptile Room to exhibit the portfolio. Ronald Feldman recounts Warhol staying for hours in the museum. The staff however was surprised by the artist’s selection of the space and were concerned that the venue would dissuade partygoers from seeing the set, but Warhol loved the bright colors of the room’s inhabitants. Ultimately, Feldman recounts that the room was mobbed on the night of the event. Endangered Species has been viewed as one of Warhol’s most important works in the medium ever since.

Born out of a discussion with the art dealers and long-time political and environmental activists, Ronald and Frayda Feldman, Warhol’s series Endangered Species features a portfolio of ten magnificently diverse animals from across the globe—all of which by the 1980s had been prominently featured on the Endangered Species List. Portrayed in a vibrant array of electrifying rainbow colors, Warhol’s Endangered Species series exposes the horrifying number of nearly extinct animals from African elephants to pine barrens tree frogs, giant pandas, and silverspot butterflies creating a dynamic tension between art and reality. Warhol chose himself an incredibly varied portfolio of animals for his paintings. From the Bald Eagle (National bird of America), to the small and remote population of the Sumatran Orangutan, the international appeal and interesting facts associated with Warhol’s endangered animals garnered the attention of many. The series was intended to bring attention to the world’s endangered animals. It features the Bald Eagle, Black Rhinoceros, African Elephant, Orangutan, Grévy’s Zebra, Bighorn Ram, Giant Panda, Pine Barrens Tree Frog, San Francisco Silverspot Butterfly and the Siberian Tiger.

Warhol understood the power of the image and his art. He donated a number of these works to raise funds and awareness. The artist was a lifelong lover of animals and nature. Nature and wildlife can be found throughout his work. His early illustrations featured cats and dogs, most notably in the children’s book Cats Name(d) Sam and One Blue Pussy created in collaboration with his mother Julia Warhola and published in 1954. Legend has it that the artist and his mother lived in a New York townhouse surrounded by cats that were all named Sam, apart from one called Hester. Warhol went on to own dogs and paint dog portraits. His love for animals can be seen in the way he photographed and painted these canine companions. Animals and nature appear in other later significant bodies of work, including Flowers and the Cow and Fish wallpaper pieces. Endangered Species reveals a little about the artist’s more personal interests and passions.

“Warhol employed the same silk-screening process that he used for his celebrity and pop art paintings – paintings that ask us to consider the commodification of fame. In an interesting twist, when Warhol applies this to endangered animals, animals most likely at risk because they sit in the crosshairs between profit and nature, the result is an acute awareness of what we stand to lose – if we don’t pay attention and act on behalf of the environment.”
—National Museum of Wildlife Art

Describing the series, the National Museum of Wildlife Art wrote, “Warhol draws attention to the rarity of these animals and gives each the ‘star’ treatment.” Warhol utilized his easily digestible pop style to his advantage, drawing viewers into the work and creating a space for activism. By placing these animals in the same spotlight he often reserved for celebrities, Warhol helped raise awareness of these endangered animals and funds to aid in their conservation. Warhol printed a special Roman numeral edition of the Endangered Species series aside from the regular edition of 150, which was gifted to wildlife conservation groups. Andy Warhol’s commitment to the environment continued following his death, endowing his beachfront property in Long Island to The Nature Conservancy from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in order to preserve a section of the ecologically significant Montauk Moorlands. In the present moment, nearly all of the animals depicted remain in danger of extinction.
