Ten Portraits of Jews of The Twentieth Century series was the idea of Warhol’s dealer, Ronald Feldman who, along with Susan Feldman, the art gallery director of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Washington, came up with the list of ten names. The collection was first exhibited at the Jewish Museum of New York in 1980 and was later displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2006.

Introduction

Created in 1980, each print in the portfolio depicts a renowned Jewish figure from the 20th century. The subjects of the portraits span across a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from the sciences to the arts. Andy Warhol created a portrait for 10 iconic personalities: (1) Franz Kafka, the pioneering German writer; (2) Gertrude Stein, the remarkable American novelist; (3) Martin Buber, the renowned philosopher; (4) Albert Einstein, the great theoretical physicist; (5) Louis Brandeis, the first Jewish judge to be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States; (6) George Gershwin, the world-acclaimed American composer; (7) The Marx Brothers, the iconic comedic group; (8) Golda Meir, the first female Prime Minister of Israel; (9) Sara Bernhardt, the French stage actor; and (10) Sigmund Freud, the founder of the psychoanalytic school of psychology. Warhol nicknamed the collection “Jewish geniuses” due to the significant contributions these figures made to society.

In many of the prints in the collection Warhol uses color-fields of layered geometric shapes to form backdrops onto which he layers a photograph of a famous Jewish figure. The faint photographic images contrast with the bright and vibrant backdrops and abstracts the archival photographic images from their original context. In doing this, Warhol generates new meanings and ways of viewing these images. Adding vivid colors and sketch-like lines, Warhol manipulates the contexts in which these historical figures are seen. By choosing ten notable figures who have all died and rendering them in a highly contemporary Pop Art style, Warhol memorialized these people and turned them into Pop Art icons whose impressive legacies are masked behind a veneer of modernity.  These further leads one to question the way images are manufactured and the difference between a person and their constructed image.

Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century [Ten Works],
1980
Graphite on paper
Each: 31.5 x 23.5 inches (80 x 59.7 cm)

The present work is a unique instance where Warhol’s exceptional draftsmanship can be observed before his renderings are translated onto silkscreens. Each portrait executed with a phenomenal line and sensible attention to the aesthetic qualities of each individual, Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century is a rare opportunity to trace back an iconic series to the artist’s hand. Although Warhol was incredibly preoccupied with celebrity, the present work also serves as an ode to each individual’s brilliance. Sarah Bernhardt and the Marx Brothers were stage and film actors, who revolutionized the world of cinema. Known for his compositions Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris, George Gershwin was a celebrated composer and pianist. Golda Meir and Louis Brandeis were both internationally recognized members of the Israeli and United States government. Franz Kafka was a major German writer highly regarded in the world of literature for his characteristic merging of realism and surrealism. Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, and Albert Einstein, who drafted the theory of relativity, are historic members of the scientific community. A forefather of existentialism, Martin Buber authored a range of works philosophizing over religion, consciousness, and ethics. Lastly, Gertrude Stein, the esteemed American novelist and art collector, was significantly in the world of the Paris avant-garde. These subjects have all contributed to international culture and arts, influencing generations of artists and thinkers beyond the twentieth century, a legacy Warhol understood and venerated, evident in their selection in the present work. The masterful refinement of the subjects in Ten Portraits of Jews of the 20th Century illustrates the heightened awareness and discernment of the overall Warhol brand while bearing evidence of the artist’s hand, creating an extraordinary sense of distinctiveness at the pinnacle of his stardom.

Franz Kafka

Franz Kafka is regarded as one of the most significant writers of the 20th century, famed for both his short stories and novels that fuse the genre of realism with fantasy. Known for his fascination with the concept of fame, Warhol in this series looks to subject’s whose accomplishments transcend this realm of surface level fame and glamour. Franz Kafka is depicted in Warhol’s characteristic late graphic style as he merges elements of realism with abstraction. Taking a well-known photograph of Kafka, Warhol uses blue hues to flood the sitters face and blue geometric shapes layered on the surface. Set against a stark black backdrop, hand-drawn, crayon-like lines are used to accentuate Kafka’s features, providing the portrait with a graphic quality. Franz Kafka is typical of Warhol’s exploration into the tensions between photographic representation and abstraction through the screen print method.

Displaying a subtlety and sophistication in Warhol’s technical advancement of the screen print method, the abstraction of Kafka’s original photograph charges the portrait with new meaning. Warhol’s use of vivid, flattened colors that allude to the notion of abstraction transport the sitter into from the past into present, working to create a 1980s Pop Art icon.

Gertrude Stein

Gertrude Stein was an American novelist, poet and art collector and was a powerful leading character within the Parisian avant-garde movement, credited with supporting the likes of Matisse and Picasso. This series transcends the realm of celebrity by depicting people of great accomplishment, although Warhol was still clearly enthralled by the mechanism of fame that characterized his sitters.

Representing a highlight and culmination of Warhol’s body of work, Gertrude Stein displays a subtlety and sophistication in the artist’s technical advancement of the screen-printing method. Warhol uses color-fields of layered geometric shapes to form the backdrop to this print, setting this against the faintly rendered photographic image and deliberately misaligned crayon-like outlines of Stein’s portrait.

Abstracting Stein’s familiar archival photograph, Warhol generates new depths of meaning to Stein’s portrait by using vivid, flattened colors, alluding to the notion of abstraction and turning the sitter into a Pop Art icon. Gertrude Stein explores the paradoxes of surface and image, abstraction and naturalism, that are held in an aesthetically pleasing dialogue through Warhol’s unrivalled screen-printing technique.

Martin Buber

Martin Buber was of the famous Jewish philosopher best known for the philosophy of dialogue, a new form of existentialism. The print employs Warhol’s graphic style that became characteristic of the latter part of his career, using an appropriated photographic image against an abstracted background and contoured crayon-like lines. This print is one of the darker portraits of the series wherein Warhol uses largely dark hues of blue against red and black outlines. The original image is barely visible behind the veneer of 1980s Pop Art and Warhol creates a pulsating image with his deliberately misaligned hand drawn contours.

Warhol transforms this historical image into an icon that pervades in the present, alluding to Buber’s lasting fame in 1980s American popular culture. Not only does this play into Warhol’s exploration in themes of mortality that are present throughout his entire career, but it captures his continued infatuation with the concept of fame. Warhol uses a mixture of hand drawn lines, unlikely colors, abstracted geometric shapes and the original photographic image to present the paradox between representation and reality.

Albert Einstein

In this print, Warhol depicts Albert Einstein, the theoretical physicist who is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest physicists of all time. Einstein is rendered in black, white and grey with half of his face appearing like a faint sketch, while the other half is drawn in great detail. Warhol adds layers of geometric shapes over the image, drawing attention to the various stages in the production of the portrait.

Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who is widely held to be one of the greatest and most influential scientists of all time. Best known for developing the theory of relativity, Einstein also made important contributions to quantum mechanics, and was thus a central figure in the revolutionary reshaping of the scientific understanding of nature that modern physics accomplished in the first decades of the twentieth century.

His mass-energy equivalence formula E = mc2, which arises from relativity theory, has been called “the world’s most famous equation”. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics. His work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science. In a 1999 poll of 130 leading physicists worldwide, Einstein was ranked the greatest physicist of all time.

Louis Brandeis

This print features the eponymous American lawyer who was the first Jew to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court of Justice in 1916 and became known as ‘the people’s attorney’.

Louis Brandeis, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution; gift of Barry Bingham

Warhol employs his classic screen print method used for his iconic portraits, silk screening an instantly recognizable photograph over applied color and tracing hand drawn lines over the photograph’s outlines. This Louis Brandeis (F. & S. 230) print is broken up into geometric blocks of red, blue, pink and yellow color creating tension between abstraction and photographic representation.

George Gershwin

George Gershwin was a renowned American pianist and composer. Gershwin worked across many different genres, from popular to classical and is best remembered for composing Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928).

In this print, Warhol renders Gershwin in his classical Pop Art style, characterized by the use of bold colors, hand-drawn lines and layering.

Gershwin is depicted from side-on, looking towards the right of the composition. The portrait is divided into quarters with each one being dominated by a different bright color.

The Marx Brothers

This print shows an image of the three Marx Brothers, Chico, Groucho and Harpo, based on a still frame from the 1946 film A Night in Casablanca. The Marx Brothers shot to fame with their comedy acts throughout the early to mid 20th century where they featured in vaudeville, Broadway and in motion pictures. Warhol repeats the photographic image three times across the print, the black ink fading with each iteration, and he uses abstract, collage-like blocks of orange, blue and purple color to transport the image into the 1980s Pop Art context.

For this series, Warhol chose only to depict subjects posthumously and so had to source images from archival material for each print. This charged the images with an inescapable theme of mortality appearing as if behind a veneer of modernity, their person belonging to the past whilst their image endures in the present. Using a mixture of hand drawn lines, abstracted geometric shapes, bright colors, and the original photographic image, Warhol sustains the tension between representation and reality that points to the artificial surface image of fame in the 1980s.

Golda Meir

In this print, Warhol depicts the Israeli politician Golda Meir in his signature Pop Art style. Meir is famous for serving as the fourth prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974 and was the world’s fourth and Israel’s only woman to hold the office of prime minister. In his portrait, Warhol renders Meir using sketch-like lines in bold red and yellow. Color-fields of layered geometric shapes in yellow, pink, red and blue form the backdrop of this print.

Warhol’s graphic style is characterized by his use of bold and vibrant colors, and Golda Meir exemplifies the artist’s playful use of color.

Sarah Bernhardt

A world-renowned French actress of the late nineteenth century, Bernhardt was one of the first prominent actresses to appear in motion pictures and become a worldwide celebrity. Known for her eccentric way of life and multiple affairs with members of European royal families and French intellectuals, Bernhardt’s is remembered for her incomparable and natural artistry that propelled her to create her own travelling acting company, a novelty at the time.

In the present work, Sarah Bernhardt’s face is shown layered over a square divided diagonally into yellow and pink fields, with tilting smaller squares floating across the composition. Her soft stare looks directly at the viewer, captivating her audience, immortalizing her theatrical energy. The result is decidedly geometric and produces a jarring and electric image. Much like other prints in this series, the bright colors bring the original photograph to life, transporting it into the context of the 1980s.

Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud is recognized as the father of psychoanalysis and a leading neurologist in the 19th and 20th centuries. He established the concept of transference and its role in psychoanalysis, which was significant for the treatment of mental disorders. Freud focused his studies and writings on the formulation of dreams, the Oedipus complex, and the power of the subconscious mind. Freud died in 1939 in the United Kingdom after fleeing the rise of the Nazi regime in Austria.

Sigmund Freud, c. 1921

The sitter of this portrait differs markedly from the usual subjects of Warhol’s work. Warhol was fascinated by celebrities, fame and glamour and in this composition, Freud is rendered in a similarly bold and vibrant style to the way Warhol depicts popular icons like Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. The print encapsulates Warhol’s late graphic style and his interest in exploring the boundaries between realism and abstraction. Warhol uses a variety of bold colors in this print, with cool purple and blue dominating the composition. Freud’s face is sketched using red and grey crayon-like outlines which the artist deliberately misaligns.
