Possessing an uncanny lifeline to public consciousness at a particular moment in time, Andy Warhol’s Mao tapped into the historic easing of relations between the United States and China in 1972. Richard Nixon’s “ice-breaking” visit to the communist nation in February of that year, in what the President termed “the week that changed the world,” amounted to a diplomatic and public relations coup in Cold War history and was widely touted by the media. Awash in images of an unfamiliar China, the American public became quickly accustomed with the visage of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung. Mining the myth surrounding the man synonymous with absolute political and cultural power, Warhol’s choice of subject was nothing short of brilliant.

Introduction

Mao comprised Warhol’s first major critically and commercially successful series following his premature “retirement” from painting in 1965 for the sole pursuit of film. Following his near fatal shooting in June 1968, the artist began to rethink the direction of his creative energies, and returned to fine art, executing commissioned society portraits in the early 1970s. Mao marked a significant turning point in the artist’s career, recuperating many of Warhol’s concerns and techniques as a Pop artist in the 1960s, and inaugurating a fertile period of renewed vision in the artist’s oeuvre.

By the early 1970s, thanks to the deliberate cult of personality enforced by Mao, the image of the Chairman was the most reproduced in the world and in history. Warhol’s gleeful love affair with all things famous made Mao a captivating figure for his art. His dealer, Bruno Bischofberger, had suggested that he create a series of portraits based on a famous figure, and originally offered Albert Einstein as a possible subject. Warhol opted instead for Mao as a larger than life figurehead. His choice was in fact inspired by a recent cover of Vogue Magazine illustrated by Salvador Dali. It showed a morphed image of Marilyn Monroe and Chairman Mao as one face. Warhol viewed Dali, who shared his commercial and artistic flamboyance, as one of his peers. It is likely that Dali’s choice of Marilyn, which echoed Warhol’s own fascination for the screen goddess, brought Mao further into Warhol’s focus as a new icon.

Committed to mining popular culture for his iconography, Warhol moved seamlessly from his earlier portraits of celebrities to that of a political figure and authoritarian ruler. In doing so, he indirectly but incisively exposed the power of mass media in the creation, canonization and commodification of personas for the purpose of collective absorption. While his simplified, logo-like representation and repetition of glamorous stars reflect the consumerist ethos of American capitalism and the advertising and publicity machinations that underpinned it, Warhol’s Mao reveals the centrally controlled propaganda apparatus of Chinese communism. Mao’s physiognomy was propagated via billboards, posters and pamphlets throughout China as a means of stating his omnipresence as both a benevolent and fearsome leader, casting a watchful eye over his subjects. Having engineered the persecution of intellectuals and artists through the Cultural Revolution, and extinguished the potential Chinese equivalents of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, Mao essentially replaced such figures and turned himself into the communist counterpart of a Pop icon. Indeed, Warhol derived his silk-screen image of Mao from an official state portrait that graced a book entitled Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, a widely circulated reservoir of the leader’s ideology.

Recognizable imagery such as Marilyn Monroe and Campbell’s Soup had already been memorialized by Warhol when he turned his focus to the famous but more controversial figure of Mao Tse-Tung. Other than his recounting of the JFK assassination or portrayals of Jacqueline Kennedy at her husband’s funeral, it wasn’t until 1972 that Warhol’s printmaking took an overtly political turn, first with Richard Nixon’s grimacing visage in Vote McGovern and then with the stoic portrait of Mao, depicted in ten screen-prints of varying vivid color schemes. The Warhol Mao series of 10 screen-prints is based on the official portrait of Mao on the cover of the Little Red Book, considered the cornerstone of Maoist ideology. In each image, Mao’s face is colored dramatically, his lips sometimes rouge red. His face color ranges from navy blue to neon white.  In many instances, Mao appears to be wearing makeup, his mole darkly colored as a beauty mark just like Marilyn Monroe.

Additionally, of note was an aesthetic feature shared by the Vote McGovern print and the Mao portfolio. These marked the first time Warhol’s freehand drawing appeared in his printmaking, heretofore compositions created by a compilation of intersecting colors, flattened by the mechanics of the screenprint process. For the first time the overlap was visible, the glossy rather than matte layers could be discerned as they came together on the Beckett High White Paper, a brand name surface. Until then, Warhol’s printmaking was simply documented as screenprint on paper. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the Mao portfolio is that never before had Warhol executed an editioned screenprint before he executed a painting of the same image. The artist was well known for repetition, and his revisiting of a subject was expected. However, it had always been that a unique work came first, with prints to follow, but with the Mao portfolio, Warhol iconography was conceived initially in editioned form.

The Mao portfolio was a significant project artistically, published in an era remembered for its political and cultural upheaval. Andy Warhol had already become known for his inimitable ability to reduce an icon to a two-dimensional picture or elevate the magnitude of a banal product. The Mao portrait was simultaneously innovative and commonplace as it was Warhol’s intention that even the most famous were ripe for mass consumption and that everything was worthy of fame. Now in a time that feels culturally, politically and technologically unimaginable yet also somehow predictable, we are even more reverential of the defining moments of our past.

The Mao portrait is famous not because of its quality, or its depth of character, but because of its ubiquity. More than the individual, it was the mechanism of fame that fascinated Warhol, the degree to which celebrity consumes creativity by repeating one and the same image to a point of banality. In the portrait, unlike other Soviet Leaders, Mao does not look off to the side, seemingly engrossed in a revolutionary scheme; instead he stares straight into the eyes of the viewer. He can thus be compared to the subjects in imperial portraiture and he emerges with the same god-like status. However, in Warhol’s version, Mao is presented with as much glamour as Marilyn; he is almost in drag. With luscious lips, highlighted cheeks and shadowed lids, Warhol undermines the imperious gravitas, transforming him into an innocuous celebrity pop star. Even Mao’s mole under his lips takes on an appearance of a Marilynesque beauty spot.

“I have been reading so much about China. They’re so nutty. They don’t believe in creativity. The only picture they ever have is of Mao Zedong. It’s great. It looks like a silkscreen”.

By using a system of repetition, yet with each work possessing individual schemes of vivid Pop colors, Warhol places himself in a position of ultimate authority over Mao’s depiction; he subverts the careful curation of Mao’s pictorial portrayal, evoking a style that is entirely at odds with the firm dictatorial presence the portrait was intended to convey.

The set of ten screenprints, through their multiplicity, enable a duality of interpretations. While Warhol’s Marilyn sought to expose the power of the mass media in simultaneously idolising and commodifying popstars, this set of portraits exposes the potency of the Chinese propaganda machine to apotheosize a powerful political persona. Here, Warhol uncovered the shared goals of both societal models: the power of the capitalist free market driven by press and advertising, and its direct antithesis, the communist model that sought absolute political and cultural control by the same means. This is Warhol at his very best: controversial and witty, showcasing the contradiction between infamy and celebrity, complicity and criticism, and the paradoxical levels of reality and superficiality in our culture.

In total, Warhol executed an ambitious 199 Mao paintings in five set scales across five individual series between 1972-73. Usually the unique work came first, with the prints to follow. Significantly the present Mao portfolio was conceived initially in the edition form.
