Andy Warhol Prints
Andy Warhol was the most successful and highly paid commercial illustrator in New York even before he began to make art destined for galleries. Nevertheless, his screen-printed images of Marilyn Monroe, soup cans, and sensational newspaper stories, quickly became synonymous with Pop Art. He emerged from the poverty and obscurity of an Eastern European immigrant family in Pittsburgh, to become a charismatic magnet for bohemian New York, and to ultimately find a place in the circles of High Society. For many his ascent echoes one of Pop art’s ambitions, to bring popular styles and subjects into the exclusive salons of high art.
His crowning achievement was the elevation of his own persona to the level of a popular icon, representing a new kind of fame and celebrity for a fine artist. Andy Warhol is with no doubt the artist who used screen-printing in the most extensive manner to create tens of thousands of prints, making his work more accessible to his public.

Roy Lichtenstein Prints
Roy Lichtenstein is one of the originators of the Pop Art movement, famed for paintings that take kitsch and transform it into culture. Lichtenstein was born in New York City in 1923. Growing up, he took art classes at the Art Student League where he created realist paintings. Lichtenstein continued his study of art at Ohio State University but, with the advent of World War II, he enlisted in the army in 1943. Lichtenstein returned to Ohio State after the war to finish his master’s degree in studio art. While Lichtenstein was teaching art at Rutgers University, he became close with fellow artist Allan Kaprow, who introduced him to Claes Oldenburg. It was during the 1960s that Lichtenstein began experimenting with what would become his signature style of taking images from comic books and newspapers and reproducing them on a large scale, calling attention to the flatness of the imagery with his Ben-Day technique of painting dots. In 1962, Lichtenstein got his first break with a one-man show at the Leo Castelli Gallery, which sold out before it opened.
Later in his career, Lichtenstein began to cleverly re-appropriate the work of fellow modern masters like Warhol, Picasso, and Mondrian, either by overtly miming the imagery or by placing these works of art into his Interiors series of paintings. The public alternatively lauded and reviled Lichtenstein for his quiet commitment to painting popular culture, and was often met with mixed feeling; in 1964 Life magazine published an article about him entitled “Is He the Worst Artist in America?” Regardless, Lichtenstein’s place in the canon of modern art is firmly established, and his works are found in major museums across the world.

The strong increase from 2024 t0 2025 is due to the sale of works from the Collection of Dorothy and Roy Lichtenstein spanning the entire career of Roy Lichtenstein, and all media including paintings, sculptures, studies and prints. Many new auction records have been set, resulting in a strong increase of average price as well.

Celebrated as one of the defining figures of the Pop art movement, Roy Lichtenstein’s dynamic practice expanded beyond his famous comic strip works, spanning a wide range of styles, media and themes. Following the sale of a select group of works from the Collection of Dorothy and Roy Lichtenstein at Sotheby’s in November 2024, Sotheby’s is pleased to partner with the Lichtenstein family to offer an expanded trove of more than 40 works by the American Pop icon at auction this May. Coming to auction for the first time after remaining in their personal collection for decades, the group of works charts four decades of Lichtenstein’s practice, following his shift from abstract expressionism to Pop art in the 60s, to his exploration of modern art in the 70s, through to his celebrated Reflections series from the 80s, and culminating in his famous interiors and nudes of the 90s. Together, “Roy’s Lichtensteins” form a throughline of the artist’s most introspective examinations of his life and practice: the metaphorical reflections on his own oeuvre, his reflections on other artists and the art historical canon, and his formal explorations of rendering reflections in his work.
A remarkable grouping of the artist’s output across various media, the group comprises paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints. Among the works on offer are the artist’s investigation of the work of the modernists, surrealists, and others, such as Picasso, Monet, Calder, subjecting them all to his own aesthetic and asserting his place in art history.
A common thread of Lichtenstein’s distinct humor and joie de vivre is woven throughout. Works highlight his more literal takes on reflection and plays on illusion, and elsewhere, drawings and studies mark the genesis for Lichtenstein’s most iconic paintings. Estimated to achieve in excess of $35 million, highlights from the collection will travel to Hong Kong from 18-23 April before returning to New York for pre-sale exhibition ahead of Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening and Day sales this May.

David Hockney Prints
David Hockney is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and of the British pop art movement. A painter, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer, his unmistakable style breaks boundaries both in the rules of art and across multiple artistic movements. Born in 1937 in Bradford, England he studied at the Royal College of Art, but did not graduate on account of declining to submit an essay along with his final work. In the 1960s, his bright, figurative paintings of Los Angeles swimming pools accompanied by Californian landscapes as wells as personal subject matter including portraits of friends ignited his career. In 1963, at the age of 26, he had his first one-man show and in 1970 the White Chapel Gallery exhibited his first retrospective.
In the early 1980s, he began working in photocollage, or “joiners” as he called them, exploring movement and photography. In a recent 2016 exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, Hockney debuted a series of works created on the iPhone and iPad exhibiting his love for technology. One of the most experimental and prolific English artists working today, David Hockney’s career has spanned over 70 years. Hockney made his first etching at the age of 17, and his practice has since developed to encompass lithography, photocopy printing, and even iPad drawings.

The strong increase in turnover as compared to 2024 is notably due to the exceptional sale from a single collection for which Sotheby’s already closed a very successful sale on 17 October 2025 in London, when 17 prints from the series sold for a record GBP 6,210,300 (USD 8,343,538).

Keith Haring Prints
Inspired by the ideals of “art as life” and moving the art experience out of galleries and into the streets, Haring’s first major works were his subway drawings. Haring produced over one hundred of these public works between 1980 and 1985, integrating his now-iconic exuberant, cartoonish outlined figures into everyday public space in a way that directly engaged its viewers. Haring recalled that the most important aspects of these works was the immediate engagement people had with them, asking him “what does it mean?” and giving him feedback that he’d then incorporate into future drawings. In this way, these works became reflections of the people who viewed them, responsive to and in dialogue with their environment. These works quickly garnered the attention of tastemakers in New York and his first solo exhibition was held at Westbeth Painters Space in 1981 and a celebrated show debuted at the high-profile Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York the following year.
Throughout the 1980s, Haring was committed to democratizing the art experience and along with paintings, he also created theater sets, billboards, murals, advertising campaigns and even a line of Swatch watches. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in SoHo, selling apparel, posters and toys bearing his drawings. Pop Shop was highly influential to contemporary crossovers of art and merchandise that are now so dominant. In addition to this ideology of accessibility, Haring was also very socially engaged and used his striking imagery to promote awareness of various political and social campaigns. His many notable public works included a mural on the western side of the Berlin Wall, the Crack is Wack mural in New York, and a mural for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and used his presence in the arts community to raise awareness of the crisis. In 1989, a year before his death, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds for AIDS organizations and children’s literacy and arts programs.

Banksy is of the most sought-after and talked about urban artist in the world. Banksy, the pseudonym adopted by the artist, heavily guards his privacy; the details of his life remains largely unknown to the public. Despite his anonymity, he is most probably the most popular living artist today, with over 10 million followers on Instagram, and more press articles and books written about him than for any other artist, his works are admired by the entire world. Banksy has garnered great fame for his street works, which often combine spray paint and stenciling techniques with commercial, political, and contemporary imagery, infused with ironic social commentary and humor. Often critical of business and corporations, Banksy’s work has been found on the sides of corporate buildings, on billboards, and on city walls from London, to New-York, from Jamaica to the Gaza strip, some of them have become as iconic as the Mona Lisa…
Banksy is not only known for his high-profile murals; he also created numerous artworks on different media that are sought-after by art collectors worldwide. Prints are a central part of Banksy’s oeuvre. The artist released around 60 prints in various edition sizes since 2002, amounting to an estimated 30,000 prints in circulation. In less than 5 years, Banksy has become a major force in the secondary market and is now featured in every notable contemporary art auction all over the world. This growth has been fueled by several career-shaping events that have been driving increased attention and appreciation for Banksy works. Most notably: the huge success of Banksy’s Barely Legal show in Los Angeles (2006), his media-friendly Better Out Than In residency in New York (2013), the bemusement art park Dismaland (2015), and the live shredding of Girl With Balloon after it had been sold for over $1m at Sotheby’s (2018).

Considered one of the world’s most influential artists, Yayoi Kusama’s work is collected and exhibited in prestigious museums and her work is highly appreciated by the public. In 2017, she opened her own museum in Tokyo, substantially contributing to her popularity. Yayoi Kusama was born in Matsumoto City, Japan in 1929. She studied Nihonga painting, a rigorous formal style developed during the Meiji period (1868–1912) to deflect the wholesale influence of Western art through the revitalization of the traditions of Japanese painting and their synthesis with aspects of Western art. Attracted by the experimental promise of the postwar international art scene, Kusama moved to New York City in 1958. As a young struggling artist in New York, Kusama produced her first astonishing Net paintings in 1959—vast canvases measuring up to 33 feet in width, entirely covered in rhythmic undulations of small, thickly painted loops.
Yayoi Kusama’s art is revolutionary. Throughout her six-decade long career, the Japanese artist has created a body of psychedelic works that not only withstood the course of time, but successfully broke away from the limits of nationality, geography, gender and art. Yayoi Kusama is a prolific print-maker. Starting in 1979, she released over 400 prints, rigorously referenced in the Catalogue Raisonne.
Jean-Michel Basquiat

When asked to describe his art, Jean-Michel Basquiat responded with customary aplomb: “royalty, heroism, and the streets.” A high school dropout, Basquiat found his true calling hanging out in the streets and inserting himself in the bustling urban milieu, ultimately becoming an influential figure in New York City’s Downtown, especially the East Village club scene. He was a regular among a group of filmmakers, artists, and musicians who made the Mudd Club, Club 57, and CBGB their stomping ground. Basquiat achieved his breakthrough in the early 1980s, developing a unique vocabulary characterized by repetitive images, human heads with open mouths as if in speech, a variety of marks, and xeroxed collage. In his paintings, the patches of intense color, created with acrylic, oil stick, and graphite, keyed into the excitement of New York’s subculture.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of the graffiti duo SAMO, alongside Al Diaz, writing enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of Manhattan’s Lower East Side during the late 1970s, where rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop music culture. By the early 1980s, his paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. At 21, Basquiat became the youngest artist to ever take part in Documenta in Kassel, Germany. At 22, he was one of the youngest to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in New York. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his artwork in 1992.
