Andy Warhol was one of the most prolific artists in Art History. He produced tens of thousands of artworks during his lifetime and has been leading the auction blocks for the past 20 years together with Pablo Picasso. He was also a prolific print-maker and his prints are now widely sold all over the world by most auction houses. With around 500 lots sold each year, and a very strong sell-through rate, the market for Andy Warhol prints is one of the most dynamic markets in the art world.

2022 was a record year for Andy Warhol’s prints at auction with a turnover of USD 86 million generated by the sale of close t0 600 lots, and an exceptional sell-through rate of close to 95%. It was also boosted by the sale of a single collection by Sotheby’s in October 2022 which generated over USD 20 million. So far in 2023, more than 500 prints sold for over USD 52 million.
This article highlights all the most important sales for the past two years. For more detail auction results by prints, you can refer to the relevant section in the Andy Warhol Prints Catalogue.

Table of Contents
Moonwalk, 1987
Andy Warhol’s Moonwalk depicts one of the most important moments of the 20th century. Using Neil Armstrong’s photograph of Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon, Warhol, for the very first time, turns this historic event into a Pop Art masterpiece. Though one might expect this work to have been done at the time of the moon landings in 1969, the prints were actually made in 1987, just a few months before Warhol’s death. It seems as though this subject appeared to Warhol to be important only after the fact, almost two decades later, when he had reached maturity in his career. And while it depicts a profound moment in the history of humanity Warhol adds his playful spin on it, tinting the iconic white astronaut suit with tones of yellow or pink and giving the surface of the moon various tones of colors.

Queen Elizabeth II from Reigning Queens, 1985

Birth of Venus, 1984
In 1984, Andy Warhol turned his focus away from his ubiquitous silkscreens of everyday, commercial objects and portraits of Hollywood’s elite to focus his attention on the history of art itself through his series Details of Renaissance Paintings. In doing so, not only did Warhol pay homage to the Renaissance masters, but he also placed himself as inheritor and predecessor of their revered lineage by incorporating excerpts of their acclaimed works and thus dramatically expanding the scope of his oeuvre.

“Goethe” (Feldman & Schellmann II.270-273), 1982
Dollar Signs, 1982
Demonstrating Warhol’s keen graphic sensibility, the dollar sign prints are animated by the complex interaction of their layers and multiple overlaid impressions, which are deliberately misaligned. Mimicking billboards, the saturated colors articulate Warhol’s continued fascination with commodity culture. Whilst his interpretations of products like Campbell’s soup cans or Brillo boxes refer to consumer capitalism by invoking the objects we fetishize; it is the dollar symbol that clarifies the artist’s focus on what drives consumption: money. Stating this so directly, Warhol challenged traditional notions of artistic elitism and defied the norms of high culture that sought to separate fine art from commercialism.

Alexander The Great, 1982
Taking inspiration from Italian Renaissance portraits and Nineteenth Century European paintings, the Alexander the Great series is Warhol’s only body of work which utilizes classical sculpture as a central motif. Warhol based his subject, portrayed in profile and gazing into the distance, on a pre-existing photograph of a Hellenistic bronze bust of Alexander the Great held in a private Swiss collection.

Myths, 1981
The Myths portfolio succinctly exemplifies one of the central concepts underpinning Warhol’s practice: elevating everyday mass media imagery to the realm of fine art. Warhol’s celebration of popular culture was vital to the development and trajectory of contemporary art. In the Myths series Warhol documents brands, characters and symbols of American popular culture, creating images that represent commercial enterprise, childhood nostalgia and manufactured dreams.

Shoes, 1980
Beautifully stylized and archetypal in their simplicity, Andy Warhol presents the nostalgia and timelessness of the stiletto in his larger-than-life composition. Arranged in a seemingly random but clearly staged way, each of Warhol’s shoes possesses a distinct character in its color and positioning, but are, in fact, identical in their epitomizing of a classic sense of elegance, glamour and style.

Muhammad Ali, 1978
Andy Warhol photographed Muhammad Ali for the first time as part of his 1977 Athletes series. This group of works featured other sports stars of the era, such as the golfer Jack Nicklaus, Brazilian soccer hero Pele and basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and was initiated by the West Coast art collector and sports fanatic Richard Weisman. At the time of their first encounter, Muhammad Ali was — for the third time — the World Boxing Association Heavyweight Champion, and Andy Warhol was approaching the peak of his celebrity. They could not have been more different.

Mick Jagger, 1975
Andy Warhol’s Mick Jagger series creates a powerful statement about the commercialization of celebrity, evident also in his decision for Jagger to sign each of the prints, thus increasing their value and enhancing their cultural significance. Mick Jagger is one of the most popular prints created by Andy Warhol, notably because it is also signed by its subject. Mick Jagger prints have been widely sold all over the world from Japan to London, Switzerland, Munich, New-York, or Toronto.

Mao, 1972
Possessing an uncanny lifeline to public consciousness at a particular moment in time, Andy Warhol’s Mao tapped into the historic easing of relations between the United States and China in 1972. Richard Nixon’s “ice-breaking” visit to the communist nation in February of that year, in what the President termed “the week that changed the world,” amounted to a diplomatic and public relations coup in Cold War history and was widely touted by the media. Awash in images of an unfamiliar China, the American public became quickly accustomed with the visage of Chairman Mao Tse-Tung. Mining the myth surrounding the man synonymous with absolute political and cultural power, Warhol’s choice of subject was nothing short of brilliant.

Sunset, 1972
Published in 1972, Andy Warhol’s Sunset series was commissioned by the architects Johnson & Burgee for their new Marquette Hotel in Minneapolis. This was just one of several projects between the firm’s partner Philip Johnson and Warhol, Johnson being a long-term collector and friend of the artist. In contrast to the architecture’s highly geometric and functional aesthetic, Warhol’s colorful screenprints vibrantly decorated each guest room, with a vast 472 impressions installed for the opening. A massive undertaking, the total project encompassed 632 unique color impressions, with 160 pieces set aside and assembled into 40 portfolios of four.

Flowers, 1970
Instantly recognizable and indisputably iconic, Andy Warhol’s Flowers represent a defining moment of American Pop Art and post-war culture. At once naïve and ironic, exuberant and meditative, the four exaggeratedly simplified and starkly contrasted flowers embody all the compelling contradictions of a rapidly changing era where consumerism and mass-production flourished alongside counterculture idealism and artistic experiment.

Marilyn, 1967
For Andy Warhol, Marilyn Monroe was the perfect interplay of personal tragedy and beauty. The world was captivated by the actress; newspapers provided access to her life through a steady stream of front-page articles and black and white photos. Indeed, Monroe possessed a tragic romance balanced with a striking naivete that gave her a magnetic pull. Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn) captures a juxtaposition of allure and sadness that characterized the life of the actress; the Technicolor wash over the black and white structure of her visage is applied as make-up, masking her true identity, yet memorializing her forever.
