Lithograph on Arches wove paper
Signed in pencil, numbered and dated ‘32/96 David Hockney 76’
Published by Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles
In 1976, David Hockney created his remarkable Friends series, capturing the essence and personality of his sitters with characteristic clarity and warmth. Executed at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles, the portraits were drawn from life as Hockney’s friends posed before him, often within carefully constructed, domestic-like settings. Offering a deeply autobiographical glimpse into the artist’s Los Angeles circle of the 1970s, the series includes depictions of Henry Geldzahler , Mo McDermott, Brooke Hopper, Billy Wilder.

He was speaking shortly after he completed an epic work in what was then a very new medium. Early the following year this series of over fifty pictures filled the grandest gallery in the Royal Academy. Hockney entitled this monumental, multiple work, The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven). Hockney’s initial idea had been to paint the season of new growth as it evolved from day to day. But working at an easel en plein air, he reflected, was ‘a bit difficult when you are stood out there in the winter’. After he had made a ‘four or five’ iPad drawings on Woldgate in early January, it struck him that ‘we could do the whole room in this way, the iPad would be very good for it’. Between January and June he did 94 iPads, but he edited them down to 51 – of which the 17 in this collection include many of the finest.

Swimming pools became a staple of Hockney’s oeuvre early on in his career. Flying into Los Angeles for the first time in 1963, Hockney looked out of the airplane window and was immediately captivated by the striking blues of the countless swimming pools below. In California he found inspiration and a place that allow him the freedom to be exactly who he was.
“It is an interesting formal problem; it is a formal problem to represent water, to describe water, because it can be anything. It can be any color, and it has no set visual description.”
Hockney’s Lithograph of Water Made of Lines and a Green Wash exemplifies this approach to depicting water. Using delicate washes and strong lines in blue and green, the print captures shifting reflections and shadows in the pool’s depths. Part of his Paper Pools series, this work reflects a pivotal moment in his career, where he expanded his printmaking practice to examine the challenge of portraying water’s ever-changing surface. Through these works, Hockney transformed a familiar subject into a rich exploration of light, space, and identity.

While at the Royal College of Art in London, Hockney’s friend and fellow artist R.B. Kitaj encouraged him to use items and people from everyday life as the subject of his work. Hockney turned to the people that were closest to him as his sitters: his friends and family. In 1961, Mo McDermott and Ossie Clark, both of whom have been frequently portrayed in Hockney’s portraiture, introduced him to British textile designer Celia Birtwell. Celia studied fabric design at Salford and went on to marry Ossie Clark in 1969. The two became fast friends as they bonded over their northern roots and shared sense of humor.
“She’s playful, funny. When I first met her,
I was attracted to the fact that she could make me laugh.”
Hockney waited until 1968 to draw Celia for the first time, once the pair was better acquainted. Since then, the artist has portrayed Celia many times through their long and enduring friendship. She has been depicted in a variety of scenes: on an office chair, in a green hat, with her husband, and more. Celia is often shown in her own fabric designs, often thinking of their sittings as collaborations. Hockney has remained inspired by Celia as the two have aged, and she has remained one of the artist’s favorite models.
