Introduction

A Bigger Book is a monumental compendium of Hockney’s oeuvre that perfectly exemplifies his artistic prodigy in both digital and traditional creative methodology. Over half a meter in length and weighing thirty-five kilograms, A Bigger Book is a 680-page chronology of Hockney’s life-time artistic output. An animated survey filled with bold colours and personal vitality, the book contains large-scale reproductions of Hockney’s most impressive works and is almost entirely visual. There is only one page of text in the book within which Hockney offers us a guiding principle to the work:

“A book like this shouldn’t have much text… you just need pictures”.

Hockney underscores the primacy of the visual over the verbal, encouraging us to delve deep into his world of beauty and color. Whether taken by the Californian swimming pools, the Yorkshire Dales, or dainty domestic flowerpots, A Bigger Book, Art Edition A-D provides a Hockney work for every feeling, every mood and every occasion: your very own at-home permanent Hockney exhibition.

In each of those drawings, Hockney mimics traditional brushwork without attempting to replace it; his mark-making is both painterly and proudly digital. Playing with the iPad’s unique possibilities of layering, Hockney experiments with his virtual toolkit of opaque blurs and solid lines of varying thickness. Similarly, Hockney explores the iPad’s palette of flat, bold color.

The digital is often synonymous with the artificial, but in Hockney’s hands it becomes vibrant life. The portable nature of the iPad affords Hockney’s drawings a palpable immediacy: a modern twist on impressionistic en plein air painting. Hockney places his work in conversation with art historical traditional still life, and in doing so demonstrates the digital to possess an equally gestural and spontaneous fluidity of line.

Untitled No. 329 (Art Edition A)

Untitled N0. 329
from A Bigger Book: Art Edition A

Medium: iPad drawing, inkjet print in colors printed on archival paper
Year: 2010/2016
Image: 17 1/4 x 13 inches (43.8 x 33 cm)
Sheet: 22×17 inches (55.9 x 43.2 cm)
Edition: 250
Publishers: The Artist and Taschen, Berlin

Signed, dated and numbered in pencil with the artist’s blindstamp

In Untitled No. 329, a bouquet of bright pink flowers and dense green foliage rests in a glass vase. The background is a solid light pink, complimenting the rosy petals, upon which the flowers seem to float. Short vertical dashes of purple, white and blue indicate the background, the mauve-colored shadow anchoring the vase to the surface. Similarly, the presence of a wall is indicated by thin white cross-hatching at the very top of the sheet.

Hockney pays close attention to nuances of color and perspective. Partially submerged by water, the flower stems appear enlarged under the surface. Hockney masterfully captures the optical trickery of refracted light, a slight detail that demonstrates his assiduous eye and ability to freeze the real world in digital print.

In Untitled No. 346, a bouquet of lush, fluorescent pink tulips burst forth from an ornamental glass vase. The flowers are contrasted against a bright blue background which could just as easily be a clear sky as it could be a painted wall. The blue backdrop, and the table on which the flowers rest, are heavily digitalized textured surfaces full of overlapping lines and colours.

The centrally positioned bouquet is a subject of close observation, with Hockney using a range of greens and pinks to capture its likeness. Paying close attention to perspective, Hockney depicts the stems of the tulips twisting in line with the swirling design of the opaque glass vase, creating a harmonious affinity between the inanimate and living.

In Untitled No. 468, a potted plant rests on a small black table in a domestic interior. The carpet is a patterned green and wall mouldings are indicated with blue, pink, and yellow wall squares.

Hockney draws each of the plant’s drooping leaves in one bold, expressive stroke, bursting with energy against the rigidity of the suggested walled interior. Color is used to connect the plant pot with its domestic environment, the ordinary plant pot almost becoming part of the furniture.

In Untitled No. 516, a bouquet of flowers is arranged in a clay vase. Amongst bright green leaves and closed flower buds, we see what appears to be a blooming white sweet pea, white carnation, and a bright pink rose. Hockney’s tightly controlled lines reveal a desire for botanical accuracy. However, this is a traditional still life in all ways but one – it is an iPad drawing.

Hockney mimics traditional brushwork without attempting to replace it; his mark making is both painterly and proudly digital. Through placing his work in direct conversation with the art historical still life, Hockney resists the hierarchy of traditional mediums such as oil paint and demonstrates the equally expressive fluidity of modern digital line.
