Introduction

David Hockney’s My Window is a monumental series documenting the ever-changing life, nature, and color seen through and around the artist’s bedroom window in his Yorkshire home. From 2009 to 2012, Hockney captured the shifting seasons and transient moments of everyday life using the medium of digital drawing: first with an iPhone, and then with an iPad. For him, the window was more than just a view; it was a means of expanding his vision of the world outside, embodying the process of looking and the joy that comes with it.

“My Window describes flowers and the sunrise in Bridlington, East Yorkshire… I didn’t ever have to get out of bed. Everything I needed was on the iPhone.”

The newly released iPad allowed Hockney to work with an unprecedented immediacy – drawing quickly and intensely, building up layers with a highly saturated palette and a wide variety of painterly effects. This sense of spontaneity, combined with his ongoing fascination with color and form, makes My Window a remarkable illustration of the famed artist’s most representative themes and techniques.

My Window: No. 281, 23rd July 2010 presents a striking red flower in full bloom, reaching toward the viewer as a vivid symbol of summer’s triumph. Sunlight pours through the open green shutters, illuminating a glass vase that reflects the season’s brightness. The dark yellow windowsill, intersected by vivid red lines, further reinforces the sense of warmth and vitality that infuses bright summer days.

Since the 1960s, flowers have been a recurring motif in David Hockney’s work. From etchings and lithographs to iPad drawings, he has continually revisited the simple vase of flowers, using it as a vehicle to refine his printmaking techniques. Beyond this technical exploration, his enduring fascination with floral still life reflects his powerful ways of seeing the world around him – an ever-evolving study of color, form, and line.

In My Window: No. 778, 17th April 2011, Hockney turns his attention almost entirely to the world outside, capturing the full bloom of spring. Through the window, a vibrant tree, perhaps a blooming magnolia, stands with its branches outstretched, covered in bright violet flowers – an emblem of late spring. The lush green lawn beside a picturesque house in the background adds to the sense of renewal. A line of violet along the windowsill suggests that spring has not only transformed the landscape outside, but has arrived in Hockney’s room too.
