Bold, graphic and industrial are descriptors often applied to the work of Roy Lichtenstein, a pioneer of American Pop Art, and at first glance, place his commercially influenced artworks in binary opposition to the Impressionist paintings of Claude Monet. Yet, Lichtenstein frequently referenced the works of the venerated French master throughout his career, challenging the perceived differences between their artistic styles. Following his iterations of Monet’s Rouen Cathedral and Haystacks that he produced in 1968 and 1969 respectively, Lichtenstein turned to Monet’s most famous works: his paintings of water lilies at Giverny, France.

Introduction

Roy Lichtenstein produced 6 screenprints in 1992 in reference to Monet’s paintings. The artist parodies these iconic works of art history, translating them for the modern age through his Pop Art aesthetic. In doing so, Lichtenstein reveals some unexpected parallels between the two artists’ formal concerns, despite their drastically different artistic styles.

“When I did paintings based on Monet’s I realized everyone would think that Monet was someone I could never do because his work has no outlines and it’s so Impressionistic. It’s laden with incredible nuance and a sense of the different times of day and it’s just completely different from my art. So, I don’t know, I smiled at the idea of making a mechanical Monet.”

A key priority in the works of Monet and the Impressionists was capturing the subtle changes in light conditions and that desire drove Monet to create over two hundred and fifty oil paintings of the water lilies at Giverny. His fascination with light and its reflections produced some of the most spectacular renderings of water within the art historical canon. Acknowledging that the rendering of such delicate nuance in thick oils worked against his clinical and mechanical aesthetic style, Lichtenstein explored alternative ways to replicate the subtilities in Monet’s composition. Constructed using sign painter’s enamel screen-printed on to stainless steel, Lichtenstein’s Water Lilies series reinforces the industrial essence of his practice. However, his innovative use of stainless steel as the surface for his works gives them a reflective quality, mirroring the lighting, colors, and contents of the room in which they are exhibited. As stated by Mary Lee Corlett, Lichtenstein’s Water Lilies “transmogrify”, constantly changing as they are viewed from different angles.

Famed for elevating images from popular culture to the status of high art, Roy Lichtenstein overturns this process, appropriating the hallowed canon of high art to showcase his own distinct visual language. Executed in 1992, this series is a wry parody of Claude Monet’s venerated Nympheas. In the print, Lichtenstein deconstructs Monet’s distinct style, replacing Monet’s textural brushstrokes and soft interplay of light and shadow with a dramatic simplification of form color and geometry, regenerating the work for a contemporary art world. Blocks of vibrant blue hues, strong diagonals, and thick black outlines delineate the shadows, while Lichtenstein’s signature Ben-Day dots imply the highlights of a sun’s rays glistening across the water. The sturdy lines, chromatic intensity and angularity of form create an almost abstract intersection of geometric shapes described in bold primary tones.

This series’ pop assault on the art canon reflects Lichtenstein’s sustained interest in his work’s relationship with his forebears; at various points in his career he produced work based on specific works, like Picasso’s Dora Maar with Cat and van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles, or overtly art-historical structures, mimicking Cubist and Surrealist compositions in the 1970s. Monet offered the painter the opportunity for particularly interesting dialogue, Monet’s soft colors and gorgeous treatment of light apparently resistant to Lichtenstein’s process. Yet Lichtenstein’s lilies feel out other points of contact between the two artists – especially the nineteenth century Japanese woodcut tradition of Hokusai and Hiroshige from which Monet himself took great inspiration. With his flat planes giving way intermittently to strange senses of depth and his rendering of landscape in signature patterns, Lichtenstein seems to possess some of the aesthetic concerns of the Japanese masters. To that end, the work seems to take the water-lily motif back from Monet’s mellifluous Impressionism, returning it, changed and updated, to its source – the work a wonderful example of a certain art-historical circularity.

Water Lily Pond with Reflections (Study), 1992
Colored pencil and graphite on paper

Lichtenstein used stainless steel to incorporate actual reflections and make the artwork change with the viewer’s angle and the room’s light, a physical exploration of the light and reflection themes Monet pursued with paint. A unique, labor-intensive process was developed to create a swirling pattern on the metal, intended to represent the rippled water surface and inspired by the appearance of 1920s and 1930s car dashboards. This involved using a drill press fitted with a rubber end, with each swirl individually executed. Sign painter’s enamel was screenprinted in seven colors over the processed steel, creating flat areas of color, diagonal lines, and the industrial texture of Ben-Day dots via stencils. Lichtenstein replaces Monet’s nuanced, textured brushstrokes with flat areas of saturated color, bold black outlines, and Ben-Day dots, a print-based industrial texture. This juxtaposition of an organic subject (water lilies) with a mechanical aesthetic encourages the viewer to reconsider how images are constructed and perceived. Like Monet, Lichtenstein was fascinated by light and reflective surfaces. The use of highly polished stainless steel allows the artworks to interact with the ambient light and colors of the room, literally shifting and changing as the viewer moves, which subtly mimics the transient, atmospheric effects Monet captured in his paintings. Lichtenstein described the process as making a “mechanical Monet,” acknowledging the inherent paradox of applying his impersonal, industrial style to a subject defined by its subjective, impressionistic qualities. The series also references the 19th-century Japanese woodcut tradition (Hokusai and Hiroshige) that influenced Monet. The flattened planes and strategic use of patterns evoke this shared historical influence.

The prints were published by Saff Tech Arts in Oxford, Maryland. The edition size was small, with an edition of 23 plus various artist proofs. Works from the series are held in the collections of major institutions, including the National Galleries of Scotland and the Tate.

Water Lilies – Pink Flower distills Claude Monet’s naturalistic imagery into a graphic, artificial composition. It features a stylized representation of water lilies and a pond using bold black outlines, solid bands of saturated color (including the prominent pink for the flower), diagonal stripes, and signature Ben-Day dots to imply light and shadow. The foreground and background are flattened onto the same plane, eliminating traditional depth and perspective.
