[CONSOLIDATED FIGURES COMING SOON]

Celebrated as one of the defining figures of the Pop art movement, Roy Lichtenstein’s dynamic practice expanded beyond his famous comic strip works, spanning a wide range of styles, media and themes. Following the sale of a select group of works from the Collection of Dorothy and Roy Lichtenstein at Sotheby’s in November 2024, Sotheby’s is pleased to partner with the Lichtenstein family to offer an expanded trove of more than 40 works by the American Pop icon at auction this May. Coming to auction for the first time after remaining in their personal collection for decades, the group of works charts four decades of Lichtenstein’s practice, following his shift from abstract expressionism to Pop art in the 60s, to his exploration of modern art in the 70s, through to his celebrated Reflections series from the 80s, and culminating in his famous interiors and nudes of the 90s. Together, “Roy’s Lichtensteins” form a throughline of the artist’s most introspective examinations of his life and practice: the metaphorical reflections on his own oeuvre, his reflections on other artists and the art historical canon, and his formal explorations of rendering reflections in his work.

A remarkable grouping of the artist’s output across various media, the group comprises paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints. Among the works on offer are the artist’s investigation of the work of the modernists, surrealists, and others, such as Picasso, Monet, Calder, subjecting them all to his own aesthetic and asserting his place in art history.
A common thread of Lichtenstein’s distinct humor and joie de vivre is woven throughout. Works highlight his more literal takes on reflection and plays on illusion, and elsewhere, drawings and studies mark the genesis for Lichtenstein’s most iconic paintings. Estimated to achieve in excess of $35 million, highlights from the collection will travel to Hong Kong from 18-23 April before returning to New York for pre-sale exhibition ahead of Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening and Day sales this May.

Nude Series, 1994
Roy Lichtenstein’s Nudes Series was the final major series the artist produced before his death in 1997. The nine prints consider the traditional art historical genre of the female nude through the lens of Pop Art and mark Lichtenstein’s return to his iconic 1960s comic book style, consisting of Benday dot patterns, bright colors, and bold lines. Published and printed by Tyler Graphics Ltd., Mount Kisco, New York, Lichtenstein referenced his own oeuvre, integrating motifs found in earlier works from the Reflections, Imperfect, Water Lily, and Interiors Series. After four decades of radically probing fundamental questions of art and artmaking, it was apt for him to select the female nude as a symbol of returning to the beginning of both his oeuvre and art history. Prints from the Nude Series are some of the most sought after by art collectors worldwide and command high prices at auction.

Water Lilies, 1992
Bold, graphic and industrial are descriptors often applied to the work of Roy Lichtenstein, a pioneer of American Pop Art, and at first glance, place his commercially influenced artworks in binary opposition to the Impressionist paintings of Claude Monet. Yet, Lichtenstein frequently referenced the works of the venerated French master throughout his career, challenging the perceived differences between their artistic styles. Following his iterations of Monet’s Rouen Cathedral and Haystacks that he produced in 1968 and 1969 respectively, Lichtenstein turned to Monet’s most famous works: his paintings of water lilies at Giverny, France.

A key priority in the works of Monet and the Impressionists was capturing the subtle changes in light conditions and that desire drove Monet to create over two hundred and fifty oil paintings of the water lilies at Giverny. His fascination with light and its reflections produced some of the most spectacular renderings of water within the art historical canon. Acknowledging that the rendering of such delicate nuance in thick oils worked against his clinical and mechanical aesthetic style, Lichtenstein explored alternative ways to replicate the subtilities in Monet’s composition. Constructed using sign painter’s enamel screen-printed on to stainless steel, Lichtenstein’s Water Lilies series reinforces the industrial essence of his practice. However, his innovative use of stainless steel as the surface for his works gives them a reflective quality, mirroring the lighting, colors, and contents of the room in which they are exhibited.

Interior Series, 1990
Unlike with most prints series, the prints of the Interior Series preceded, rather than followed, the paintings of similar subjects. Preliminary discussions about the prints began in the fall of 1989. Lichtenstein created eight small collages for the project in his New York studio, and in early 1990 he arrived at Gemini G.E.L to begin work. The Interiors are based on advertisements, most of which Lichtenstein cut from the Yellow Pages of telephone directories. He enlarged the advertisements using an opaque projector, traced them, and then, after turning the tracing paper over, extensively reworked the images. Once a composition had been reworked to his satisfaction, he traced the drawing onto museum board, at which point the collage elements were added.

Roy Lichtenstein’s Composition series of 1996 brings the spirit of soul and jazz vividly into screenprint. Playful in both composition and colour, the work captures the essence of music so effortlessly that one can almost hear it. Composition IV offers a synesthetic experience, bridging sight and sound as sinuous lines of melodic notation weave across the composition. Notes appear to drift freely across the page while the flowing curves of musical bars intertwine, creating a sense of movement as though the music itself is breaking loose. The screenprint seems to push outward, the notes gliding toward the viewer’s ears.
The young Lichtenstein grew up immersed in a world of booming mass culture, commercial advertising, and jazz. Surrounded by the modern art of the 1930s and shaped by the geometric, modernist aesthetics of Art Deco and Futurism, he drew deep inspiration from what he saw and heard. Trained in piano, flute, and saxophone, and even a member of a jazz band, music became one of Lichtenstein’s greatest passions, an emotional outlet and an enduring source of inspiration. During his formative years, he frequented New York City’s music clubs at a time when jazz was experiencing a vibrant revival. Lichtenstein’s work beautifully captures the essence of the city, the music, and this singular cultural moment. Musically influenced pieces such as Composition IV offer a vivid snapshot of a particularly meaningful era in within American popular culture.

Landscape 2, from Ten Landscapes (Corlett 52), 1967
Screenprint on four-ply board with a translucent moiré overlay mounted on composition board
An unsigned printer’s proof aside from the edition of 100
One of the most adventurous print portfolios of the 1960s, 10 Landscapes utilized the new and exciting material Rowlux, a 3-dimensional moiré plastic sheeting, most often used as drum wraps. Roy Lichtenstein was the first artist to see possible artistic application of the material and worked closely with Fine Creations Inc’s., owner Charles Cardinale in the printing and production of the series. The portfolio was a commercial success, and Cardinale subsequently worked with both Salvador Dalí and Richard Linder who also used this revolutionary material in some of their graphic works.

Bull I, from Bull Profile Series (Corlett 116), 1973
Line-cut on Arjomari paper
Signed and dated in pencil, numbered ‘A/P XII’
One of thirteen artist’s proofs, the edition was 100
Lichtenstein’s Bull Profile Series references Picasso’s famous treatment of this subject in 1945, Le Taureau. In Picasso’s rendering the bull is gradually simplified through eleven successive re-workings of the lithographic stone from a naturalistic depiction of the animal to a mere cypher. In the final impression the bull is pared down to its essence, an archetype embodying virility and strength. This progression from naturalism to radical simplification is intimately associated with the lithographic process, the refinement of the image through repeated erasure and re-drawing on the stone. By contrast Lichtenstein’s series is pre-conceived, based on collages and drawings which he had executed beforehand. Rather than reflecting a visual search for the bull’s true form through abstraction, the Bull Profile Series is a gentle parody of such grand aspirations. The prints are graphically slick, using a combination of screenprint and lithography, with the addition of line cut, a process more often associated with commercial printing. There is no history of the image’s development, no investing of the subject with personal symbolism, only a playful obscuring of the animal’s shape, until it is rendered indecipherable in a colorful arrangement of geometric shapes. The series encapsulates David Sylvester’s observation in an article in American Vogue in 1969 that ‘Lichtenstein takes soulful subjects and paints them with cool’.
