Bull Profile Series is a set of six prints that systematically deconstruct and abstract the image of a bull. As a commentary on art history, the series parodies Pablo Picasso’s 1945 lithograph series Le Taureau, which also explored the process of simplifying a bull’s form. Rather than being a visual search for a deeper meaning, Lichtenstein’s work playfully questions the line between figurative and abstract art.
Introduction
Lichtenstein explored the “progression” of an image from “representation” to “abstraction” in both paintings and prints of the early 1970s. In 1972 he executed the painting Pitcher Triptych. The following year, at Gemini G.E.L. from February to September, he completed the six multimedia prints of the Bull Profile series and the three of the Bull Head series. The painting Cow Triptych (Cow Going Abstract) followed them in 1974, and Lichtenstein periodically returns to the compositional device as in Tel Aviv Museum of Art Mural (1989). Lichtenstein’s bulls relate to Theo van Doesburg’s Composition (The Cow) (1916–17) and to Picasso’s eleven Bull lithographs (1945–46).
Lichtenstein directly references Pablo Picasso’s historic 1946 series on the same subject, The Bull (Le taureau), comprising eleven successive re-workings of a lithographic stone. Picasso began with a naturalistic depiction of the bovine in profile, then gradually contorts and pares down the animal into its most basic elements. The final impression is reduced to a near-hieroglyphic rendering of the original form.
While Picasso investigates the modernist belief that universal truth could be discovered through distillation and abstraction, Lichtenstein responds through parodying this ideology and playfully questioning the presumed differences between ‘realistic’ and ‘abstract.’ Lichtenstein reflects on his own series that ‘nothing is more abstract than anything else to me. The first one is abstract; they’re all abstract.’ The stylized, curving lines in Bull I, reminiscent of Old Master engravings, straighten out into bold diagonal fields in Bull VI. Lichtenstein draws from his well-known practice of transforming his source image, in this case a 1970 cattle sales catalogue. At the renowned print workshop Gemini G.E.L in Los Angeles, he rendered this progression of the image through the combination of lithography, screen-print as well as line cut, a process more often associated with commercial printing. With each sequential print, Lichtenstein further tactically obscures the animal’s shape until it is nearly indecipherable, embedded within a harmoniously balanced composition of saturated shades of primary colors.
Each of the six prints transforms the bull, progressing from a realistic, detailed depiction to an arrangement of geometric shapes.
The series begins with a fully recognizable and anatomically defined bull, rendered with thick, precise black lines in a style reminiscent of woodcuts or line engravings. The composition is highly symmetrical and uses only black and white. Color is introduced in the second print, with the bull depicted in blue against a striped blue background. The animal is still recognizable, but the lines are softer, and the overall composition appears flatter. The abstraction begins to accelerate in the third print. The bull’s shape is simplified and rendered in primary colors (red and yellow), and the composition becomes more geometric.
The bull’s form is further obscured in the fourth print, with its body becoming a colorful, abstract arrangement of shapes. The horns and tail are still somewhat discernible through Lichtenstein’s comic book-style outlining. The final images complete the abstraction. The bull’s form is reduced to a few essential, geometric shapes, ultimately becoming indecipherable as an animal.
The series is an investigation into the transformation of printing techniques and art forms. Lichtenstein used a variety of media across the six prints. While the first print uses only line-cut, the subsequent prints combine lithography, line-cut, and screenprint. The use of screenprinting adds the commercial, mass-produced quality—including his signature Ben-Day dots—for which Lichtenstein is known.
The progression of the series maps a movement away from fine-art rendering toward a mechanical, comic-book style. This applies Lichtenstein’s Pop Art sensibility to the abstract process explored by modern art masters. Unlike traditional methods that evolve the image through a refining process, Lichtenstein based the prints on pre-conceived drawings and collages. This makes the series a deliberate commentary on the artistic process rather than an organic, visual search.
The series’ meaning lies in its parody of modernist traditions and its examination of how art is perceived. The work subtly pokes fun at the modernist idea that abstraction leads to a higher, more truthful form of expression. Rather than revealing the “essence” of the bull, Lichtenstein demonstrates that simplification can lead to the opposite—an indecipherable geometric arrangement. The series showcases Lichtenstein’s approach of tackling a “soulful subject,” like a bull, with a cool, intellectual detachment. By making the transformation an overt, sequential progression, he invites the viewer to analyze the shift from representation to abstraction.
The series is more about investigating the artistic process itself—including printmaking techniques and art history—than the subject of the bull. Unlike other artists who would invest personal symbolism into the subject, Lichtenstein strips the bull of any narrative, focusing instead on its formal transformation.
In 1989 Lichtenstein gave permission to Artists to End Hunger, Inc., to reproduce the Bull Profile series on a set of six 13-by-13-inch porcelain plates in an edition of fifty, plus six artist’s proofs. The publication was for the benefit of the International Art Show for the End of World Hunger, in which Lichtenstein’s print series was exhibited.
