Commandeering the lexicon of art history, Roy Lichtenstein’s Six Still Lifes series (1974), showcases the artist’s enduring dialogue with visual vocabulary of the past. The still life genre spans art history, from Egyptian tombs decorated with paintings of everyday objects, to Dutch Golden Age still lifes laden with allegory.

Introduction

Throughout the 1970s, Lichtenstein was consumed with the genre and completed many compositions echoing various still life ‘types’. Notably, Lichtenstein’s still lifes are devoid of the vanitas symbols that are so prolific within the still life genre. Certain symbols, such as skulls, candles and decaying fruit, which usually serve as reminders to the viewer of the unstoppable passage of time and the pervasive nature of their own mortality, are omitted. As a result, Lichtenstein’s still lifes are relieved of moral admonitions and memento mori, eschewing the gravitas of traditional still lifes. Instead, they playfully and self-referentially investigate notions of creation and, in the artist’s quintessential manner, reshape conceptions of artistic authorship.

Kanji Nakamura, Still Life with Yellow Platter and Fruit, 19th-20th century, Harvard Art Museums

The still life genre has long been an opportunity for artists to experiment with light, color and perspective. Kanji Nakamura, for instance, painted still lifes of an array of objects, including fruits, plates, figurines and plants. Centrally concerned with light, color and the relationships between various objects in the composition, Nakamura rendered his still lifes in a painterly and naturalistic manner. By contrast, Lichtenstein was not concerned with achieving verisimilitude. Instead, he sought to disregard the genre’s conventions.

“When we think of still lifes, we think of paintings that have a certain atmosphere or ambience. My still life paintings have none of those qualities, they just have pictures of certain things that are in a still life, like lemons and grapefruits and so forth. It’s not meant to have the usual still life meaning.”

Johannes Vermeer, The Milkmaid, c. 1660, Rijksmuseum. Image: Rijksmuseum, SK-A-2344

In The Milkmaid (c. 1660), for instance, Johannes Vermeer uses adept linear perspective and meticulous rendering to present this domestic tableau featuring a still life in the foreground with remarkable realism. Nonetheless, in disregarding verisimilitude, Lichtenstein’s series sits in dialogue with other modern masters, such as Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne and Pablo Picasso, who similarly engendered a nuanced deconstruction of the genre’s conventions.

In Six Still Lifes, the bold cartoonish outlines, flat planes of color and graphic simplifications of tone oust painterly naturalism in favor of the artist’s iconic comic book aesthetic. Printed by Multiples, Inc. together with Lichtenstein’s gallerist, Leo Castelli, the Six Still Lifes series utilized a combination of screenprint and lithography to achieve this graphic language. With as many visual similarities to mechanically reproduced advertisements or commercial cartoons as to historical still lifes, the moral subtexts that traditionally underpin still lifes are further subverted. In this sense, Lichtenstein’s series invites the viewer to question the role of the artist and to reconsider traditional boundaries of artistic creation.

The prints of the Six Still Lifes series, executed in lithography and screenprint at Styria Studio, New York, were published by Multiples, Inc., and Castelli Graphics. As a group they suggest a capsule summary of the subject, representing several different still-life “types”:  from food (Yellow Still Life) to objets d’art (Still Life with Figurine) to objects grouped thematically (Still Life with Lobster). Other still-life prints from this period include Still Life with Picasso and Untitled (Still Life with Lemon and Glass).

Still life is one of the oldest and most venerable genres. It is an uncanny barometer of an era as it directly reflects the time in which it was made. Still Life with Figurine does not impart the symbolism of Vanitas or religious imagery as one would expect from still life paintings from centuries past, but instead offers a snapshot of the secular modern world. A plate, pitcher and pearls–symbols of plenty–are joined by the Asian statue, a sign of cultural awareness and societal status. The pearls surround the statue, decadence mingling with virtue, implying the spiritual co-opting and consumer culture that defined the late 20th century.

Historically, still lifes would provide the public with allegorical depictions of cultural values and social class. Items revealing the importance of sea trade were common in these paintings, as nations depended on imports and exports. Lichtenstein’s Lobster introduces a crowded tabletop, situated in the midst of a figurative seaside setting, enhanced by a notably fauvist color palette. Lobster’s symbolism ponders the contradictory social status of those who provide, versus those who consume in a community. As such, the bright red lobster on the table, suggestive of leisure, is counterbalanced by a fisherman’s yellow net in the background, indicative of labor.

Lichtenstein embraces the decorative qualities of still lifes, rendering his series according to a pronounced commercial aesthetic. Still Life With Pitcher And Flowers employs an airy composition, presenting modernized versions of classical still life motifs. A figurative black and white pitcher sits on the left, signaling welfare and nourishment. On the right, the artist situates a minimalist illustration of a potted plant, alluding to the temporary nature of things. Still Life With Pitcher And Flowers expands the meaning behind the traditional still life symbols of life and death. Fixing the two objects on either side of an empty center, the print suggests a pitstop halfway between the opposing poles that govern our existence.

Lichtenstein embraces the decorative qualities of this artistic tradition, rendering his series according to a pronounced commercial aesthetic. Still Life With Portrait follows the conventional layout of classical still lifes, framing a figurative interior with a frilly curtain and the ear of a pitcher. The portrait of a grinning woman is hung on the wall, reminiscent of a glamour shot. A bowl of fruit, contrastively minimalist, is situated on the table in the foreground of the work. There is an immediacy to this print, an unmistakable ‘what you see, is what you get’ quality. Lichtenstein presents his own rendition of a still life, and while he employs a historically accurate structure, he executes the print entirely in the manner of modern art.

Still Life with Windmill depicts a stylized and vibrant composition featuring a table with a pitcher, a bottle, and several fruits, set against a bold background of diagonal stripes. To the left, there is an open window with a detailed view of a windmill, rendered in Lichtenstein’s characteristic comic-book style with thick black lines and flat colors. The juxtaposition of the everyday objects with the iconic windmill creates a dynamic tension and a sense of depth, blending realism with abstract elements. The use of primary colors and black outlines showcases Lichtenstein’s signature technique, underscoring the influence of commercial art and popular culture within the Pop Art movement.

Historically, still lifes would capture the vanity of earthly pleasures through allegorical depictions of inanimate objects. Lichtenstein’s Yellow Still Lifedoes just that, showcasing a perishable assortment of goods, set against a neutral, cream coloured background. The print depicts apples, oranges, bananas, lemons and a block of cheese, piled together in the centre of the composition. Although Lichtenstein mimics the subject matter and the conventional layout of classical still lifes, he renders his shapes purist, uniform and bright yellow. The artist re-envisions an elaborate historic image as a simplified graphic. In doing so, he presents a humorous artwork reminiscent of a modern day supermarket advert.
