This is Lichtenstein’s first “Imperfect” print. Work on this project began at Gemini in December 1986. Early in 1987 Lichtenstein began work on the “Imperfect” print series with Gemini. After the edition of Imperfect Print for B.A.M had been produced, Lichtenstein determined that he preferred the print oriented in the opposite direction (upside down) and so he signed it that way, accounting for the Gemini blind stamp at the upper left.
The print is one of a group of eight prints created to mark the 125th anniversary of the Brooklyn Academy of Music. At this time Lichtenstein was serving on BAM’s board of trustees. Contributing artists were Jennifer Bartlett, Francesco Clemente, Roy Lichtenstein, David Salle, Kenny Scharf, Julian Schnabel, Donald Sultan, and Terry Winters. Sizes of the works vary.
