Celebrated as one of the defining figures of the Pop art movement, Roy Lichtenstein’s dynamic practice expanded beyond his famous comic strip works, spanning a wide range of styles, media and themes. Following the sale of a select group of works from the Collection of Dorothy and Roy Lichtenstein at Sotheby’s in November 2024, Sotheby’s is pleased to partner with the Lichtenstein family to offer an expanded trove of more than 40 works by the American Pop icon at auction this May. Coming to auction for the first time after remaining in their personal collection for decades, the group of works charts four decades of Lichtenstein’s practice, following his shift from abstract expressionism to Pop art in the 60s, to his exploration of modern art in the 70s, through to his celebrated Reflections series from the 80s, and culminating in his famous interiors and nudes of the 90s. Together, “Roy’s Lichtensteins” form a throughline of the artist’s most introspective examinations of his life and practice: the metaphorical reflections on his own oeuvre, his reflections on other artists and the art historical canon, and his formal explorations of rendering reflections in his work.

A remarkable grouping of the artist’s output across various media, the group comprises paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints. Among the works on offer are the artist’s investigation of the work of the modernists, surrealists, and others, such as Picasso, Monet, Calder, subjecting them all to his own aesthetic and asserting his place in art history.

A common thread of Lichtenstein’s distinct humor and joie de vivre is woven throughout. Works highlight his more literal takes on reflection and plays on illusion, and elsewhere, drawings and studies mark the genesis for Lichtenstein’s most iconic paintings.

Nude Series, 1994

Roy Lichtenstein’s Nudes Series was the final major series the artist produced before his death in 1997. The nine prints consider the traditional art historical genre of the female nude through the lens of Pop Art and mark Lichtenstein’s return to his iconic 1960s comic book style, consisting of Benday dot patterns, bright colors, and bold lines. Published and printed by Tyler Graphics Ltd., Mount Kisco, New York, Lichtenstein referenced his own oeuvre, integrating motifs found in earlier works from the Reflections, Imperfect, Water Lily, and Interiors Series. After four decades of radically probing fundamental questions of art and artmaking, it was apt for him to select the female nude as a symbol of returning to the beginning of both his oeuvre and art history. Prints from the Nude Series are some of the most sought after by art collectors worldwide and command high prices at auction.

Water Lilies, 1992

Bold, graphic and industrial are descriptors often applied to the work of Roy Lichtenstein, a pioneer of American Pop Art, and at first glance, place his commercially influenced artworks in binary opposition to the Impressionist paintings of Claude Monet. Yet, Lichtenstein frequently referenced the works of the venerated French master throughout his career, challenging the perceived differences between their artistic styles. Following his iterations of Monet’s Rouen Cathedral and Haystacks that he produced in 1968 and 1969 respectively, Lichtenstein turned to Monet’s most famous works: his paintings of water lilies at Giverny, France.

A key priority in the works of Monet and the Impressionists was capturing the subtle changes in light conditions and that desire drove Monet to create over two hundred and fifty oil paintings of the water lilies at Giverny. His fascination with light and its reflections produced some of the most spectacular renderings of water within the art historical canon. Acknowledging that the rendering of such delicate nuance in thick oils worked against his clinical and mechanical aesthetic style, Lichtenstein explored alternative ways to replicate the subtilities in Monet’s composition. Constructed using sign painter’s enamel screen-printed on to stainless steel, Lichtenstein’s Water Lilies series reinforces the industrial essence of his practice. However, his innovative use of stainless steel as the surface for his works gives them a reflective quality, mirroring the lighting, colors, and contents of the room in which they are exhibited.

Reflections Series, 1990

In making the screenprints in the Reflections series, Lichtenstein appropriated imagery from his past works, and particularly from comic book sources, returning to subject matter he had addressed in the 1960s. Lichtenstein’s approach in these reflection works can therefore be read as a witty comment on the techniques of pop artists who themselves quoted and reused imagery found in popular culture, and perhaps an acknowledgement that his own work had entered into popularized visual culture.

Interior Series, 1990

Unlike with most prints series, the prints of the Interior Series preceded, rather than followed, the paintings of similar subjects. Preliminary discussions about the prints began in the fall of 1989. Lichtenstein created eight small collages for the project in his New York studio, and in early 1990 he arrived at Gemini G.E.L to begin work. The Interiors are based on advertisements, most of which Lichtenstein cut from the Yellow Pages of telephone directories. He enlarged the advertisements using an opaque projector, traced them, and then, after turning the tracing paper over, extensively reworked the images. Once a composition had been reworked to his satisfaction, he traced the drawing onto museum board, at which point the collage elements were added.

Landscapes Series, 1985

In 1984–85 Lichtenstein produced a group of Landscape paintings, the imagery of which was composed of a combination of “cartoon” and “real” brushstrokes. In 1985 he explored the theme in his series of seven prints, produced at Gemini G.E.L. Some of the images in the series refer to masterpieces by other artists, Van Gogh, for example, in The Sower, while others are invented.

Paintings Series, 1984

Roy Lichtenstein’s Paintings Series (1984) comprises 8 visually engaging prints that form a conceptual exploration of what it means to create, view, and interpret a painting in the postmodern era. Completed in the final decade of his career, this series reflects Lichtenstein’s ongoing fascination with the conventions of art history and the boundaries between high and low culture. Each print in the series presents a ‘painting within a painting’—or more accurately, a ‘painting within a print.’ Framed artworks, comic characters, brushstroke imitations, and even decorative frames themselves become the subject matter, all rendered with Lichtenstein’s signature techniques: bold outlines, flat areas of color, Benday dots, and stylized brushwork. The result is an ironic, analytical, and playfully self-aware body of work that challenges the authenticity and sanctity traditionally associated with painting.

Brushstrokes, 1965/1967

CURRENTLY BEING UPDATED

In Brushstroke (1965), Lichtenstein continued his extended enquiry into the very nature of the brushstroke and its perceived importance in an art historical context. While expressive brushstrokes were revered by the Abstract Expressionists and art critics alike in post-war America, Lichtenstein’s satirical response was to parody this gestural mark through his antithetical Pop Art approach.

Reverie, 1965

UNDER UPDATE

The 11 Pop Artists portfolios were a new center of gravity in America’s art history. These edgy compilations of fresh prints from then-emerging artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselmann, among others, launched new dialogues as artists engaged printmaking as a way to broadcast novel ideas more broadly. Mature and masterful, these images belied any notion that contributions to the 11 Pop Artists portfolios were Lichtenstein’s experimental forays into printmaking. Reverie and Sweet Dreams Baby! demonstrated that years of experimentation preceded such ingenious screenprints.

Shipboard Girl, 1965

Shipboard Girl is a quintessential example of Roy Lichtenstein’s Pop Art style, transforming a melodramatic comic book image into high art. The print features a close-up, cropped image of a blonde woman’s face, a frequent figure in Lichtenstein’s work often referred to as a “comic heroine.” Her eyes are closed, and her lips are parted, suggesting a moment of intense emotional experience—either pleasure, longing, or anxiety.
