With no definitive beginning or end to the composition, Infinity Nets are a dizzying journey into the infinite. The artist’s looping brush strokes ebb and flow across the canvas, creating a rising and falling effect like the ocean tide. The work is underpinned by an emotional intensity contained within the Kusama’s obsessive practice. In feats of remarkable stamina and focus, Kusama is known to labor for hours over her works to the point of exhaustion, meticulously repeating her looping brushstrokes in order to create the net’s rippling effect. The process of painting becomes an all-consuming, almost spiritual experience, the world distilled to one simple form. Beginning at a single point on the canvas, Kusama applies her brushstrokes without any guidelines for the composition. The patterns produced by her close working often only revealing themselves only after she has stood back from the painting. Because Kusama works so intently, the density of the individual loops changes over time as her brush runs dry of paint. This results in a surface that is rich in both visual and textural variety, and in which the artist’s technical skill and physical and mental stamina are very much on display.

Introduction
The genesis of this series is deeply rooted in Kusama’s personal experiences and psychological struggles. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama began experiencing hallucinations at a young age—an affliction that would profoundly shape her artistic vision. These hallucinations often involved her perception of the world as being covered in endless patterns, particularly polka dots and nets. In many ways, the Infinity Nets series can be seen as a form of self-therapy, a way for Kusama to externalize and manage her inner turmoil by transferring it onto the canvas.

The first painting in the Infinity Nets series was created in 1959, shortly after Kusama moved to New York. This work, characterized by an obsessive repetition of tiny arcs and loops, was a bold departure from the Abstract Expressionism that dominated the art scene at the time. The initial “Infinity Nets” were monochromatic—usually white—allowing the texture and rhythm of the nets to create a sense of movement and depth. Kusama painstakingly applied the paint in a repetitive, almost meditative process, often working for hours or even days without stopping. This repetitive action was not just a technique but a means of coping with her psychological distress, transforming her anxiety into an infinite expanse of pattern.
Over the years, Kusama’s Infinity Nets evolved in terms of color and scale. While the early works were predominantly white, she later introduced vibrant colors such as red, blue, and yellow, each carrying its own symbolic weight. For instance, the white nets are often interpreted as representing purity, emptiness, or the void, while the red nets evoke a sense of urgency, passion, or danger. The blue nets, on the other hand, can be seen as a nod to infinity and the boundless nature of the cosmos. Kusama’s process remained consistent: she would cover the entire canvas with her intricate net patterns, layer by layer, until the canvas was saturated with the seemingly endless web of loops. The methodical, repetitive nature of the work was both a reflection of and a response to her mental state—a way to impose order on chaos.
Infinity Nets in Prominent Institutional Collections

The Infinity Nets series had a profound impact on the art world, challenging the norms of contemporary art in the 1960s and beyond. While Kusama’s work initially struggled to gain recognition in the male-dominated art scene of New York, her persistence paid off. The series was embraced by the avant-garde and caught the attention of influential figures like Donald Judd and Frank Stella. The works were celebrated for their unique ability to blend minimalism with a deeply personal narrative, standing out for their innovative approach to texture, repetition, and scale. Kusama’s Infinity Nets are not just paintings; they are immersive experiences that invite viewers to lose themselves in the endless repetition of patterns. This sense of infinity, of being part of something larger and unending, is central to Kusama’s artistic philosophy and has resonated with audiences around the world.
Even as Kusama continues to create new works well into her nineties, the Infinity Nets series remains one of the most enduring and significant aspects of her oeuvre. The sheer number of Infinity Nets paintings she has created over the decades—each one unique yet part of a larger whole—speaks to her unwavering dedication to exploring the concept of infinity and the nature of existence. Kusama’s Infinity Nets have transcended their original context, becoming iconic symbols of both her personal journey and the broader evolution of contemporary art. The series continues to inspire and captivate new generations of artists and collectors, cementing Kusama’s legacy as one of the most innovative and influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Infinity Nets in Prominent Institutional Collections

The Infinity Nets series is more than just a collection of paintings; it is a window into Yayoi Kusama’s soul, a testament to her resilience, creativity, and ability to transform personal struggle into universal art. Through these intricate, mesmerizing works, Kusama has created a visual language that speaks to the infinite complexities of the human mind and the boundless possibilities of artistic expression. Each brushstroke is a celebration of her boundless imagination, inviting us to dive into a world where art and infinity collide in the most joyous of dances. Kusama’s legacy shines brightly, a beacon of inspiration for all who dare to dream beyond the limits of the visible world.

2023 Auction Results
24 lots sold at auction in 2023 for a turnover of USD 42,938,834.
With 3 lots unsold, the sell-through rate remains a solid 89%. This compares to 27 Infinity Nets selling at auction in 2022 for a total turnover of USD 60,877,453. This is not only due to a strong decrease in the number of lots sold in 2023, but also due to the fact that no major Infinity Nets from the 1960’s was presented at auction in 2023, even though a new world auction record was set for this series at Est-Ouest Auctions in Hong-Kong on 28 May 2023.

Within the vast oeuvre of Yayoi Kusama, Sunset Glow in My Heart occupies an exceptionally rare and distinctive position. At first glance, the work appears to be a classic ‘Infinity Nets,’ continuing the rigorous aesthetic she established in 1959. Upon closer inspection, however, it reveals itself to be a complex synthesis of her historic technique and her later emotional expression. It is a confluence of artistic currents, bridging the visual severity of her New York period with the poetic narrative of contemporary life.
“My room, my body, the entire universe was filled with [patterns]… myself was eliminated, and I had returned and been reduced to the infinity of eternal time and the absolute of space. This was not an illusion but reality.”
A defining feature of this work is its title. The majority of Kusama’s ‘Infinity Nets’ series are given cool, alphanumeric designations, such as Infinity Nets (ABCD). These codes reflect the mechanistic and depersonalized quality of the nets as a veil of nothingness. Sunset Afterglow in My Heart, however, radically breaks from this convention. It bears a deeply emotive, almost diaristic title—a form of naming typically reserved for her figurative series My Eternal Soul, which began in 2009. By bestowing such a romantically charged and melancholic title upon a “Net” painting, Kusama transforms the canvas from a pure pattern into a landscape of memory. The title becomes the key to interpreting the work, inviting the viewer to perceive the field of red not merely as an abstract symbol, but as a meteorological system of the artist’s inner world—a captured “afterglow” within her psyche. On the verso of this deeply personal work, a label bears the artist’s own emotive poetry.
Summoning you
To show me my message for God
As always, sunset afterglow
Inside my heart
Residing there
Forever
For the sake of living
LOVE
For everything that is Yayoi, and for all-encompassing Death.
Visually, this work employs Kusama’s most iconic color combination: red and white. If her initial breakthrough in the 1960s was defined by the silence of white nets on white grounds—her so-called “negative space” paintings—then the introduction of high-contrast red marked a decisive turn towards vitality. In Kusama’s lexicon, red is the color of the sun, the color of blood, and the color of biological obsession. It evokes the primal energy of her early “Accumulation” soft sculptures, imbuing the canvas with a pulsating, organic life force.

On the picture plane, while this is a flat painting, it is imbued with a sculptural quality. The very accumulation of pigment creates undulating layers and a sense of handcrafted texture. Simple circles transform into a repeated, combined motif. Here, Kusama explores form in a manner entirely her own.
This work stands as a quintessential example of Kusama’s late style. Created when the artist was 91 years old, this 2020 piece differs markedly from the tense, anxious brushwork of her youth. Instead, it exhibits a confident, rhythmic breathing. The paint is applied with a fluid ease; this sense of relaxation suggests a master who has come to terms with her own obsessions. The circles are no longer a confining cage but rather an undulating wave, creating a visual field that feels less like imprisonment and more like meditation.

The historical backdrop against which this painting was created cannot be overlooked. The year 2020 was when the world ground to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In April 2020, she issued a rare public statement, declaring that “the entire world is fighting.” Created during this specific window of global anxiety, Sunset Afterglow inside My Heart can be interpreted as a profound declaration of resilience. For Kusama, painting the nets is an apotropaic ritual, a way of imposing order upon chaos. By choosing to title a work from this year, she focuses on the light that persists after the day’s end—a message of hope and endurance from an artist who has spent her life seeking survival through art.

INFINITY-NETS (OPRT), 2004
Acrylic on canvas
193×193 cm (75.9×75.9 inches)
Painted in 2004, INFINITY-NETS (OPRT) is an exquisite example from Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s ground-breaking series of Infinity Nets. Veiled in a shimmering lattice of intricately applied loops, dots, and curls, the vibrant rose and pearl colored canvas mesmerizes with ethereal radiance that beckons us closer, enveloping the viewer in poetic splendor. The delicacies of the contours subtly unfold across the painting like billowing cotton-candy clouds, as Kusama melds the observable with the spiritual to obliterate the picture plane into boundlessness, perfectly epitomizing the artist’s notion of the infinity. Created almost half a century after she began her renowned Infinity Nets body of works, INFINITY-NETS (OPRT) exemplifies Kusama’s matured approach. Differing to her early oil paint iterations, the present work is rendered in glimmering sapphire-pink and white acrylic paint on canvas – owing to a pivotal shift of medium the artist undertook in the early 1980s. Whilst this transition nods to Kusama’s early nihonga water-based experimentations, the quicker drying time of acrylic reflects the artist’s relentless endurance to make sense of the world and herself, through her art, with remarkable ferocity.

Infinity-Nets (GKT), 2015
Acrylic on canvas
145.5×112 cm (57.3×44.1 inches)
A blazing constellation of red dots bound together by an intricate painterly web, the present work is a vivid example of Yayoi Kusama’s celebrated Infinity Nets. Wrought from delicate skeins of impasto, the surface confronts the viewer as a shimmering optical matrix of lines and apertures, seemingly endless in its luminous depths. Begun in earnest following her move to New York in the late 1950s, Kusama’s Infinity Nets represent the cornerstone of her practice. Though conversant with the aesthetics of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism that dominated the art world during that period, they occupied a uniquely personal territory, representing the manifestation of hallucinations that had haunted the artist since childhood. In these visions, dots, flowers and nets would proliferate indefinitely over her body and surroundings. Kusama’s first ever hallucination, notably, was dominated by the color red, lending the present work a poignant retrospective quality.

Infinity Nets [OPQR], 2007
Acrylic on canvas
91×73 cm (35.8×28.7 inches)
With its dynamic, lacy webs of gold impasto woven over a deep black backdrop, the present work is an exquisite example of the Infinity Nets that are Yayoi Kusama’s defining painterly achievement. The metallic pigment is applied in countless small, looping strokes, which are far from mechanical in their repetition: rather than following any rigid system, they spiral out from various nodal centres across the canvas, creating an organic, all-consuming surface whose warp and weft appears to pulse and vibrate. To create these works Kusama paints obsessively, sometimes for forty or fifty hours at a time, in a process of meditative self-transcendence. While driven partly by the memory of phantasmagoric visions she suffered during her childhood, the Infinity Nets ultimately go beyond the biographical, evoking vast, unfathomable forces that lie outside the limits of human imagination. Infinity-Nets (OPQR) was created in 2007, shortly after Kusama was awarded the 2006 Praemium Imperiale for Painting, Japan’s most prestigious international art prize.

Acrylic on canvas
162.2×130.5 cm (63.9×51.4 inches)
In its endlessly repeating knots of shimmering silver covering a barely discernible black ground reconfigured by the eye into a vibrating expanse of polka dots, Yayoi Kusama’s Silver-Nets (EOKI) is a particularly dynamic example of the artist’s highly significant Infinity Nets series. Evoking at once the molecular and the cosmic, the expansively infinite and deeply intimate, Kusuma first embarked on her series of vast nets shortly after her move to New York in 1958, when Abstract Expressionism was at its zenith. In her blending of seriality with modes of all-over painting Kusama sought not only to disrupt distinctions between figure and ground, but to obliterate the nature of canvas completely, allowing it to merge with herself, the room and ultimately, the entire universe.

INFINITY-NETS (UAFE), 2016
Acrylic on canvas
131.4 x 97.2 cm (51.7 x 38.2 inches)
Unfolding in undulating waves of brilliant emerald green, INFINITY-NETS (UAFE) is a stunning, unusual example of Yayoi Kusama’s iconic series. Painted in 2016, in the same year as the Japanese artist was awarded the prestigious Order of Culture by the Imperial Family, this mature work represents the culmination of Kusama’s life-long fascination with her signature repeating motif and the zenith of her incredible 70-year career. Created over half a century after her first Infinity Net painting, INFINITY-NETS (UAFE) emphasizes the privileged position that the series continues to occupy in Kusama’s pioneering practice, and its role developing a contemporary language of abstraction. Expansive, immersive, and beautifully delicate, the endlessly repeating and scalloped patterns of the present work resonate well beyond the limitations of the canvas, extending through her entire Infinity Net series out to her earliest soft sculptures, obliteration rooms, and provocative performances through to the mirrored environments and Infinity Rooms that are currently the subject of sell-out exhibitions worldwide.

Yayoi Kusama exhibited her first Infinity Net paintings in New York in 1959. Employing the minimal repeated gesture of a single touch of the brush, Kusama’s revolutionary paintings responded critically to the emotionally and semiotically charged brushstrokes of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Albeit a relative novice to oil painting at the time, Kusama was able to at once firmly grasp and radically redefine the medium in bold defiance of gestural abstraction, meting out the ecstatic masculine gesture into dainty increments and forging a sophisticated feminine aesthetics of obsession and repetition. Replacing the expressive gesture with an exhaustive one, Kusama’s meticulous and labor-intensive methods literally pushed painting to its limits.

Diagnosed with an obsessional neurosis, Kusama used her art to “self-obliterate” hallucinatory visions through the process of compulsive reproduction of dots and lines. Her art was that of epic excess, exuding an infinitely self-perpetuating momentum that engulfs and overwhelms even as it entrances and enthralls. In a conversation with Gordon Brown in 1964 the artist declared: “My nets grew beyond myself and beyond the canvases I was covering with them. They began to cover the walls, the ceiling, and finally the whole universe. I was always standing at the centre of the obsession, over the passionate accretion and repetition inside of me”. Compulsively painting, often for days at a time, Kusama’s high-intensity process is integral to the meaning of her celebrated Nets series: each loop and each line is indexical to her very being.

Kusama’s 1998 Nets is a mesmerizing exploration of repetition and infinity, the canvas serving as a portal to an ethereal realm of pattern. Through intricate, undulating configurations of nets, Kusama creates a sense of boundlessness that transcends the canvas. The nets, meticulously rendered with countless tiny loops, convey a sense of obsessive precision, and create a visual tapestry that seems to extend beyond the physical boundaries of the artwork.
“This endless repetition caused a kind of dizzy, empty, hypnotic feeling.”

Red has held a profound desirability throughout art history, captivating artists and viewers alike. It is a color of immense symbolic power, signifying both passion and danger, love and anger. In the art of the Renaissance, red was reserved for religious subjects, symbolizing divinity, or to denote wealth and social status. In more recent art movements like Abstract Expressionism, red became a conduit for raw emotion and intensity. Artists like Mark Rothko harnessed its depth to convey complex feelings. Beyond symbolism, red is inherently attention-grabbing, easily drawing the eye and conveying a sense of urgency or vitality. Its power not only lies in its significance throughout art history but also in its primordial ability to evoke visceral reactions and leave a lasting impression on the viewer.

YAYOI KUSAMA
Uchu (Universe), 1994
Acrylic on canvas
91×73 cm (35.9 x 28.7 inches)
Executed in 1994, Uchu (Space/Universe) forms part of Kusama’s most acclaimed body of work and her longest-running series, which she began after moving to New York in 1958. The series is instantly recognizable through Kusama’s repetitive curved brushstrokes, semicircular patterns and dichromatic palettes that mark a shift from the singular abstract biomorphic forms of her youth to a more obsessive, repetitive style which would come to define her oeuvre. Created through the intersection of two parallel picture planes, the works succeed in building a non-hierarchical, non-objective work motivated by compulsive tendencies. The series is both a manifestation and coping mechanism for her obsessive-compulsive disorder and hallucinatory visions brought on by her psychological state. Kusama struggled with visions of infinitely oscillating, kaleidoscopic patterns throughout her childhood in Japan, the memories of which she has described in her own words: “I was always standing at the center of the obsession, over the passionate accretion and repetition inside of me” (Yayoi Kusama quoted in: Laura Hoptman, Yayoi Kusama, London, 2000, p. 103). It was not until her arrival in the United States, however, that Kusama found the means of channeling her psychosomatic visions and tendencies into the paintings that would form the beginning of the iconic Infinity Nets series. Working with a focus that is both obsessive and meditative, Kusama would move her brush across the canvas with precise, minute flicks of the wrist, carefully weaving the complex skein of overlapping loops to create an undulating pattern that calls to mind the simultaneously mesmerizing and terrifying glimpse of infinity one experiences before a seemingly endless expanse of shimmering water.

A stunning example of art-world phenomenon Yayoi Kusama’s acclaimed series of Infinity Net paintings, the present work dazzles in its exploration of spatial abstraction and the concept of infinitude. Painted in 1992, a year prior to Kusama becoming the first Japanese artist to participate in the prestigious Venice Biennale as an individual, the kaleidoscopic canvas is composed of an endless maze of oscillating, ruby-red and white geometric shapes, creating a net-like effect as denoted by the work’s title.

“You might say that I came under the spell of repetition and aggregation. My nets grew beyond myself and beyond the canvases I was covering with them. They began to cover walls, the ceiling, and finally the whole universe. I was always standing at the center of the obsession, over the passionate accretion and repetition inside me.”

Executed in 1989, Infinity Nets forms part of Kusama’s most acclaimed body of work and her longest-running series, which she began after moving to New York in 1958. The series is both a manifestation and coping mechanism for her obsessive-compulsive disorder and hallucinatory visions brought on by psychological trauma and represents a half-century long exploration of her psychological state. The present work is comprised of an intricate lattice of geometric shapes forming a net which extends beyond the picture plane to suggest an infinite abyss. Rendered in deep red brushstrokes juxtaposed against a black underlay, Infinity Nets depicts a shallow surface of geometric, intertwining small arcs.

Edition: 9/10 (unique color variant)
Over two metres tall, Statue of Venus Obliterated by Infinity Nets debuted in 1998 at the exhibition YAYOI KUSAMA: NOW at Robert Miller Gallery, New York. Created in the pivotal year when Kusama concurrently had her momentous institutional retrospectives Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama, 1958-1968 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art, the present work is one of the ten editions that Kusama amalgamates her iconic Infinity Nets painting with a life-size statue.

Among each unique edition that disguises the goddess statue in different palettes of Infinity Nets, the present work is the only edition rendered in vibrant magenta, a tint that is neither cool nor warm, and that stands for universal love and courage. Subjugating the divine statue of Venus de Milo with her signature hypnotic open loops, Kusama camouflaged the fluid and elegant contours of the Greek goddess against the dazzling infinity net canvas in the background. Here in myriad magenta loops sprawling across an underlayer of midnight black is an avant-garde intervention on a classical ideology through ‘obliteration’, a concept Kusama has spent her whole life exploring in many and various ways. ‘Polka dots can’t stay alone. When we obliterate nature and our bodies with polka dots we become part of the unity of our environments,’ Kusama famously affirmed.

Kusama’s Infinity Nets remains one of the most arresting visual lexicons that shapes the discourse of post-war and contemporary art, and its formation can be traced back to the ongoing hallucinations the artist has suffered since childhood. Born in 1929 to a well-to-do family that runs a plant nursery business in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Kusama began to experience hallucinations of seeing multiplying patterns on everything around her at the age of ten. Coping with this illness throughout her life, Kusama painted her vision in order to fight against her fear, which she later acknowledged as a process of ‘self-obliteration’.
“When I was a child, one day I was walking the field, then all of a sudden, the sky became bright over the mountains, and I saw clearly the very image I was about to paint appear in the sky.
I also saw violets which I was painting multiply to cover the doors, windows and even my body. It was then I learned the idea of self-obliteration.
I immediately transferred the idea onto a canvas. It was hallucination only the mentally ill can experience.”
By 1959 Kusama moved to New York and painted her seminal net-like painting titled Pacific Ocean, an archetype of her career-defining white Infinity Nets series that garnered modest praises by artists and critics. Kusama channels her ongoing hallucinations through perseveringly drawing those tiny loops with a discrete movement of her wrist, a gesture that is both obsessive and therapeutic. As Kusama further expanded her Infinity Nets in various scales, such repetitive paradigm evolves into the forms of mirrored installation, soft accumulated sculptures, self-obliteration mannequins as well as the notorious happenings she staged on the streets of New York City, all with one single goal: to unite with the universe through the means of obliteration.

Burgeoning from the artist’s pioneering self-obliterating body collages and happenings from the 60s, Statue of Venus Obliterated by Infinity Nets marks an unrivalled breakthrough as Kusama introduced an iconic cultural artefact into her ‘self-obliteration’ practices. By masking the timeless marble statue of Venus de Milo that symbolizes infinite beauty and love with her signature Infinity Nets, Kusama went from delineating her own ‘psycho-somatic art’ to probing into the historical paradox of this famous Greek statue housed in The Louvre since the early 19th century. First branded as a classical Greek sculpture of Venus by great sculptor Praxiteles to the public, it has successfully become an emblem of national pride when France was still recovering from Napoleonic wars. Though only by the 1950s has the museum revealed the statue was, in fact, a statue of Aphrodite made under the hands of little-known Hellenistic sculptor Alexandros of Antioch.

For Kusama who struggled her way in New York during the 60s in the realm of a male-dominated art world, Venus de Milo is not merely an emblem of Western divine art as it also exposes, though indirectly, the prejudices in the history of art connived by institutions. Such dimension of Venus de Milo resonates with Kusama as a female artist that fought hard to be treated the same during her early years. The saturated magenta pigment on the dark background reminisces the intimate tone that dominated an early Kusama’s self-portrait in a form of prickly pink seed, making the present work an aptly self-reflection of the artist at the pinnacle of her career where she is no longer the footnote but the subject in the discourse of contemporary art. Like the Venus in the present work, Kusama surrendered herself to her art by standing in front of her works in her polka-dot outfits. Here, an immortal figure of universal love and beauty that shields from the outer world in the Infinity Nets, is at once ‘herself’ and the universe. Statue of Venus Obliterated by Infinity Nets is a testimony of Kusama’s enduring avant-garde spirit that will continue to conquer our world with the self-manifesting power of Infinity Nets.
