Auction Results (2022/2025)

PRELIMINARY AUCTION RESULTS
As of 30 November 2025

313 prints from David Hockney sold at auction so far in 2025 for a turnover of USD 26,325,829. With 28 lots unsold, the Sell-Through Rate is 91.8%.

The strong increase in turnover as compared to 2024 is notably due to the exceptional sale from a single collection for which Sotheby’s already closed a very successful sale on 17 October 2025 in London, when 17 prints from the series sold for a record GBP 6,210,300 (USD 8,343,538).

“It was a wonderful Spring, and we always planned to record it
I just didn’t realize the iPad would be part of it then.”

Furthermore, 8 more prints from the series sold at Sotheby’s in New-York on 20 November 2025 for a total turnover of USD 4,343,400.

266 prints from David Hockney sold at auction in 2024 for a turnover of USD 10,406,115. With 31 lots unsold, the Sell-Through Rate is 89.6%. This compares to 388 prints sold in 2023 for a turnover of USD 17,375,912, with a Sell-Through Rate of 90.4%.

This sharp decrease in turnover from 2023 to 2024 amounts to 40% and is due to: (i) a sharp decline in the number of lots sold from 388 to 266 (-31%); and (ii) a moderate decrease in the average price per lot from USD 44,783, to USD 39,121 (-12.7%), mostly focused on prints priced on the lower range.

The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, 2011

In the Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire in 2011 (twenty eleven), David Hockney chronicles the atmospheric changes from winter to summer. The artist worked en plein air, in the tradition of a long lineage of landscape artists who desired to capture the immediacy of the outdoors. Just as these artists utilized the innovation of paint in tubes to take their work outside of the studio, Hockney also realized the potential present in the latest technology of his time: the iPad. The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate is one of the most iconic series of prints released by the artist and, as such, it logically commands the highest prices paid at auction.

David Hockney released 49 prints in 55×42 inches in size, each in an edition of 25, or a total of 1,225 prints. Furthermore, the artist has released a smaller group of 12 visuals in a larger size, 92×70 inches, in an edition of 10.

Moving Focus, 1984-86

David Hockney’s Moving Focus series, created between 1984 and 1986, is widely regarded as his most ambitious and extensive series of prints. The series consists of twenty-nine lithographs that explore the concept of perspective in innovative ways, challenging traditional Western approaches to spatial representation. Hockney drew significant inspiration from Cubism and Chinese scroll paintings, both of which reject the fixed, single-point perspective dominant in Western art since the Renaissance.

Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book, 1980

Instantly recognizable, David Hockney’s swimming pools are widely identified as the artist’s most famous motif. Embodying his fascination with post-war America and in particular, with the hedonism of California, Hockney’s swimming pools also serve as a metaphorical springboard into an extended investigation that spanned decades of his career: the formal challenge of representing water. Pool Made with Paper and Blue Ink for Book was created to accompany a publication on the Paper Pools series, emphasizing the interconnected nature of Hockney’s swimming pool images, despite the varied media he used.

Weather Series, 1973

The stylized depiction of weather conditions, especially rain, in Japanese art fascinated Hockney and in 1973 he began work on his own series of weather prints.
