The Myths portfolio succinctly exemplifies one of the central concepts underpinning Warhol’s practice: elevating everyday mass media imagery to the realm of fine art. Warhol’s celebration of popular culture was vital to the development and trajectory of contemporary art. In the Myths series Warhol documents brands, characters and symbols of American popular culture, creating images that represent commercial enterprise, childhood nostalgia and manufactured dreams.

Introduction
Myths is a seminal collection of ten screenprints that explores the fictional characters and archetypes defining the American psyche of the 20th century. Unlike Andy Warhol’s earlier works that focused on real-life celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Myths turns toward “superstars” from film, television, and folklore that represent a “patchwork” of shared cultural nostalgia.

The portfolio consists of ten iconic figures:
- The Shadow: A 1930s crime-fighter, presented as a double self-portrait of Warhol himself.
- Mickey Mouse: Representing Walt Disney’s power of brand and iconography.
- Superman: A personal childhood hero for Warhol, symbolizing strength and transformation.
- Santa Claus: Symbolizing the bearer of consumer presents and holiday excess.
- Uncle Sam: A less confrontational depiction of American identity.
- Dracula & The Wicked Witch: Representing darker, “spooky” archetypes of fantasy.
- Howdy Doody: A nostalgic icon from classic American children’s television.
- The Star (Greta Garbo): Capturing the glamorous, elusive nature of classic Hollywood.
- Aunt Jemima (Mammy): A controversial character reflecting commercial stereotypes of the era.
The Myths portfolio is a compendium of American entertainment idols. Many of Warhol’s chosen subjects in the series date back to the early days of TV and film. For example, Howdy Doody was a children’s television show that first aired in 1947, while The Star features Greta Garbo. Figures such as the cackling Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz and the costumed flying figure of Superman function as heroes and villains; mythological embodiments of good and evil. Depicting fictional figures from television, film and popular folklore, using rich colors and diamond dust, Warhol pays a nostalgic homage to the characters that featured heavily in both his childhood and a shared American cultural consciousness.
“I looked for ideas on the New Myth series…But I think the best thing we decided to do is to have people come and dress up in the costumes and we’ll take the pictures ourselves, because that way there’s no copyright to worry about”.

When planning several of the prints from Myths, Warhol invited friends and actors to his studio to dress up in costume. Among them was Margaret Hamilton posing as her iconic role of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. Warhol then took Polaroid photographs which became the source material for his screen prints. This elaborate process, involving makeup and costumes, resulted in dynamic images imbued with movement and vivid color. Warhol even included an image of himself as The Shadow, a crime-fighting hero from the 1930’s radio show. The artist looks out from the picture plane as a shadowy, enigmatic figure. The process of selection for these ten characters was hugely rigorous. Like all of Warhol’s embellished portraits, many of the Myths themselves are fictions of the image that they are meant to portray.

“Everybody has their own America, and then they have pieces of a fantasy America that they think is out there but they can’t see. You live in your dream America that you’ve custom-made from art and schmaltz and emotions just as much as you live in your real one.”
The Myths portfolio succinctly exemplifies one of the central concepts underpinning Warhol’s practice: elevating everyday mass media imagery to the realm of fine art. Warhol’s celebration of popular culture was vital to the development and trajectory of contemporary art.
