David Hockney’s Moving Focus series, created between 1984 and 1986, is widely regarded as his most ambitious and extensive series of prints. The series consists of twenty-nine lithographs that explore the concept of perspective in innovative ways, challenging traditional Western approaches to spatial representation. Hockney drew significant inspiration from Cubism and Chinese scroll paintings, both of which reject the fixed, single-point perspective dominant in Western art since the Renaissance.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Introduction

In Moving Focus, David Hockney renders furniture, terraces, dining rooms, as if he had been constantly moving his head. And the fact is that we rarely perceive our surroundings in rectangular form with stable horizontals and fixed verticals. For example, when we focus on a screen in front of us and at the same time see a scurrying shadow, the chairs at the other end of the table, a the cat scampering, the standard lamp, we are coming somewhat closer to David Hockney’s way of drawing. When Hockney turned away from naturalism in the 1980s, he also radially questioned central perspective. To do this he suddenly turned it around, shifting the vanishing point behind his back, that is to say, behind the viewer as well. For example, the table on which the vase with the amaryllis is standing, is depicted in reverse perspective.

Hockney is always preoccupied with how to unite several perspectives in one work of art. In his view, multiperspectivity corresponds how we actually perceive things, as this is shaped not only by different angles of vision, but also by emotions and feelings. Here Cubism was an important model for him as it split a motif, presenting different views of it. What is more, on a trip he undertook in 1981 Hockney discovered Chinese scrolls paintings. Those images, in extreme longitudinal or horizontal formats, have to be unrolled to be viewed. They tell their stories by capturing different factors of an event or a landscape from different perspectives.

Hockney’s intention with Moving Focus was to capture the way we naturally perceive space—not as a static, single viewpoint, but as a dynamic experience that involves movement and multiple perspectives. This idea is particularly evident in works like The Perspective Lesson and the prints depicting the Hotel Acatlán in Mexico. These pieces blend architectural elements with shifting viewpoints, creating a sense of movement within the composition itself. The use of vibrant colors and fragmented forms further enhances the dynamic quality of these prints, inviting viewers to engage with the work in a more active, participatory manner.

The series was well-received for its bold experimentation and its dialogue with art history, particularly its engagement with the legacy of artists like Picasso. Hockney’s exploration of reverse perspective and his use of multiple vantage points within a single composition were seen as both a continuation and a reinvention of these earlier artistic traditions.

Overall, Moving Focus stands as a testament to Hockney’s ability to blend traditional techniques with modern innovation, creating a body of work that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
