Andy Warhol’s Toy Paintings series is an outstanding example of the artist’s preoccupation with commercialism and animation, and forms part of the artist’s later body of work that witnessed a resurgence of his energetic and colorful canvases. Serving as a more child-oriented expression of Warhol’s acclaimed advertising motifs of Brillo and Mott’s boxes from the 1960s, his Toy Paintings series embodies the same consumerist spirit. His ecstatically painted silkscreen canvases consist of popular children’s toys that are now collector’s items.

Introduction

Toy Paintings (also known as Toy Series), executed in 1983 and commissioned by the legendary art dealer and collector Bruno Bischofberger in Zürich. He had simply asked Andy Warhol to make an exhibition for children. Warhol was quick to respond, he loved the idea, and composed a comprehensive series of 128 paintings depicting monkeys, parrots, dogs, clowns, robots and so on all in unique color compositions. The artist had found the inspiration for the paintings in his own collection of wind-up mechanical toys. And as Warhol explained a year or so later in an interview in the New York Times, when about a hundred of his paintings were being shown at the Newport Art Museum.

The Toy Painting series has its origins in 1982 when the gallerist and long-time friend of Andy Warhol’s, Bruno Bischofberger, asked him to create a small series of works for children, similar as he had done in 1982 when he requested a series of paintings depicting Mao.

“In 1982 I asked him to create a group of small works for children. Andy responded with the Toy paintings, which I showed in my gallery in Zurich in 1983. Warhol designed wallpaper of Silver fish swimming on a blue background which made the gallery look like an aquarium, and the paintings were hung at eye level for three- to five-year-old children. Adults had to squat to examine the paintings closely, the opposite of me having to lift up my little children when looking at paintings in museums. We even went so far as to charge an entry fee for adults not accompanied by children under six, the proceeds being donated to a Swiss children’s charity.”

Warhol’s response were the Toy Paintings; a series of acrylic and silkscreen ink canvases whose subject matter took inspiration from Warhol’s personal collection of childhood tin toys. First shown in the exhibition Paintings for Children at Bischofberger’s Zurich gallery in 1983, the pieces were displayed against a wallpaper of silver fish swimming across a blue background designed by Warhol himself. Each canvas was hung at the eye-level of a three to five year old child causing adult viewers to crouch or squat to examine them. Bischofberger even charged an entrance fee to all those who attended the exhibition without being accompanied by a child under the age of six. As a gleeful saboteur of artistic dogma and etiquette, this was a decision that Warhol must have enjoyed – and indeed, in Moon Explorer perhaps the strongest feeling that abides is of an artist reveling in the freedom of youth.

”Lots of international toys [were] included
because a lot of them are the cutest of any I’ve seen”

Silkscreened onto energetic bright colors, each Toy Painting underscores Warhol’s distinct ability to render the elegant and graphical simplicity of each design.

In this series, Warhol elevates children’s toys, an emblem of consumerism, to the realm of high art and in doing so, exposes the artistry and power of the carefully crafted symbols themselves. In his use of recognizable graphics, Warhol transmutes cultural signifiers for his own aesthetic ends. Imbued with an inherent dynamism, the intimately scaled paintings in particular celebrate the infectious spirit of childhood curiosity and creativity.

Toy Paintings exhibition at Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich, 1983

The Toy Paintings, which combine silkscreen and hand-painting, are characterized by a wealth of drawn detail, precise contours, playful shifts and subtle color transitions, creating an impressive and expressive diversity. In an article for Artforum in 1986, Lisa Liebmann praised the series for the depth of its palette, underlining Warhol’s ability to manipulate color to create works of evocative and versatile beauty. There is said to be 128 Toy Paintings, covering a wide range of toys.

Each subject in the Toy Paintings challenges traditional notions of artistic merit and authenticity, prompting viewers to reconsider their relationship with consumer culture and everyday objects. With their playful yet stimulating images, these works invite us to revisit the innocence and splendor of childhood, while questioning the cultural forces that shape our collective imagination. Parrot stands out for its exoticism, Space Ship for its link with the culture of the conquest of space, Police Car for its evocation of childhood heroes, Choo-Choo Train for its reference to Western culture and westward expansion, and Roll Over Mouse for its purity and innocence.

“It must have been Walt Disney. I cut out Walt Disney Dolls.
It was actually Snow White that influenced me.”

Warhol said in answer to the question of which artist influenced him first. Since his artistic work had always been guided by the ethos of play, it is hardly surprising that he immediately took to the idea suggested by his gallerist Bruno Bischofberger of creating an exhibition especially for children. At first glance, these paintings appear simple, charming, and playful. Yet, as with much of Warhol’s work, beneath the surface lies a complex interplay between depth and superficiality, mass production and individuality, originality and reproduction. By using the same silkscreen technique as in his famous paintings of Campbell’s Soup Cans, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley, Warhol places these seemingly innocent toys within a broader dialogue about commercialism, identity, and iconography.

It is also tempting to view Toy Paintings as a form of self-reflection late in Warhol’s career. Created just four years before his death, the series looks back on his early fascination with American consumer culture, while introducing a new tone of nostalgia, warmth, and playfulness. The toys he depicted were no longer contemporary products, but relics of a vanished childhood. Toy Paintings thus capture a subtle cultural shift – from the ironic celebration of mass-produced icons to a more personal and wistful reflection on the objects that once inspired wonder.

Warhol himself described the effect of Pop Art as a reprogramming of perception:

“Once you ‘got’ Pop, you could never see a sign the same way again. And once you thought Pop, you could never see America the same way again. The mystery was gone, but the amazement was just starting.”

In Toy Paintings, this duality feels more present than ever. The mystery may be gone – but the wonder remains.

Moon Explorer

Moon Explorer epitomizes the spirit of twentieth-century childhood and its associated innocence as seen through the prism of contemporary media. Warhol brings the image of a toy robot to life with vibrant colors and a process he had mastered perfectly: the silkscreen. The palette brings forward the graphical simplicity of the original toy, and shows it in a new world of imagination by adding additional outlines to the original screen.

(Roll Over) Mouse

Rollover Mouse was modeled after a Japanese wind-up toy mouse, contained in a simple rectangular cardboard box displaying playful pictures of the toy in action. Appropriating this model, Warhol flattens the imagery, simplifies and brightens the colors and removes the brand name. The radiant red pigment paired with simple yet artful graphics and animated characteristics jump off the canvas, captivating the viewers’ attention. Additionally, the cropped and diagonal orientation of the print manifests an energy and dynamism that defines Warhol’s Pop-Art style and brings the mouse to life. Warhol reuses the mouse’s images on the carboard box to push them to their limits. Stripping away the brand name and infusing bright colors enhanced by intricate outlines, he translates this object into a pop style he masters flawlessly, paying homage to his youth while dramatizing American consumerism. The simple yet ingenious graphics and the painting’s structure generate a striking visual impact and a sense of animation, elevating the work beyond a mere expression of nostalgia. The mechanical mouse thus attains the status of a popular icon.

Monkey

In clear fields of color, Monkey emerges as a tribute to twentieth-century childhood: an image of innocent play filtered through the aesthetics of contemporary mass media. The motif, derived from Russian packaging design for a tin toy, is given new life through Warhol’s characteristic and seemingly effortless use of color. The small monkey, rendered in various tones in contrast with a blocked background, is defined by shadows in white. Through this color scheme, Warhol highlights the toy’s stylized formal language: a graphic simplicity that reveals how just a few lines can contain an entire world of imagination and stories.

Clockwork Panda Drummer / Panda Bear

The small black and white panda stands in the center of the painting, carrying a drum in front and swinging the drum sticks. Around him float a couple of notes and lines of music, to make the music “audible” to the viewer. The work is striking for the glaring color of the background which contrasts with the restrained colors of the drawing, so that a harmonious composition emerges.

Robot

The robot works within the Toy Paintings series hold particular significance, as Warhol returned to this subject multiple times, creating four distinct variations. His fascination with robots extended beyond his artwork—he even nearly became one in Lewis Allen’s planned show An Evening with Andy Warhol.

As Warhol’s friend Vincent Fremont noted, “Andy was known to mention in interviews that he wanted to be a machine, to be plastic, which can translate into meaning he wanted to be a robot. Becoming a robot was a conceptual idea, which might have influenced Andy to paint toy robots” (Exh. Cat., Honor Fraser GalleryAndy’s Toys: Robot & Space Ship Painting, November – December 2013, n.p.).
