Frölunda Hockey Player was created in 1986 on commission by the Art Now Gallery in Göteborg, Sweden. It portrays Christer Kellgren, a player from the Swedish hockey club Frölunda HC, in a frozen moment of action. Warhol reduced the original photograph of Kellgren into bold, contrasting colors and simplified forms, a hallmark of his Pop Art technique. Warhol’s rendition of Kellgren exemplifies his fascination with celebrity culture, extending beyond musicians and actors to athletes. The player is outlined with red and brown lines, contrasting vividly against the green, yellow, and white of his uniform set against a black backdrop. Warhol deliberately simplified facial features to focus the viewer’s attention on the colors and forms of the athlete’s body and uniform, consistent with his crayon-like gestural and overlapping color techniques. Although Warhol preferred working with celebrity figures from entertainment and social spheres, he was intrigued by the celebrity status of sports stars. Frölunda Hockey Player aligns with his other sports-related portraits, including Wayne Gretzky, Muhammad Ali, and Dorothy Hamill, reflecting his engagement with fame and popular culture
