Untitled 1-4 is a series comprised of 4 of limited-edition lithographs featuring Keith Haring’s signature “modern hieroglyphics” style to express themes of joy, community, and social commentary. Released the year he was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, these works encapsulate the complex blend of energy and underlying social consciousness that defines his legacy.

Introduction
Each print from this series features Haring’s signature style: bold, black outlines filled with flat, vibrant primary colors (red, yellow, and blue). The artist employs action lines to convey a strong sense of movement and dynamism.
One print depicts three red figures lifting a blue figure against a yellow background, evoking a sense of communal celebration or crowd surfing. Another features a figure covering its eyes inside a television screen, a symbol Haring used to critique passive media consumption and the negative aspects of mass culture. Other prints focus on dynamic interactions between figures in various poses (jumping, dancing, interacting), using body language as a universal form of communication.
Created in 1987, the prints are a testament to Haring’s commitment to using his art for broad communication, similar to his subway drawings. Haring often used his work to comment on pressing social issues, and this series is no exception. Themes include the power of technology (the TV screen print), community (the dancing figures print), and broader human experiences. 1987 was a pivotal year for Haring, as he received his AIDS diagnosis. While some of his work from this period and after became darker, these particular prints generally maintain a more celebratory and energetic tone, reflecting Haring’s belief in joy and the power of human connection, even in the face of adversity. This series exemplifies this ability to convey profound, universal messages with simple yet powerful imagery. Those works are a clear precursors of the Pop Shop series showcasing an imagery easily understood by all across borders, cultures, and age.
