Jane Fonda is a vibrant silkscreen portrait capturing Fonda’s celebrity and activism, using bold colors (royal blue, red) and comic-book-like outlines, typical of Pop Art’s focus on fame, though this version was commissioned to support Fonda’s husband, Tom Hayden’s political campaign, blending Hollywood glamour with social consciousness.

This striking portrait of actress/activist Jane Fonda is based on a Polaroid photo taken by Andy Warhol. The deep royal blue background and Jane Fonda’s vibrant red lips and accents create a bold, graphic look. Strong black outlines add a comic-book, almost theatrical quality, emphasizing her features.

This portrait is reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s earlier works of Hollywood icons like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, continuing Warhol’s fascination with stardom and the power of media allure. By using screen printing, a commercial process that allows for mass reproduction, Warhol democratizes the image of fame and comments on how mass media creates cultural icons.

The print was specifically created in 1982 to serve as a fundraiser for Fonda’s then-husband, Tom Hayden, who was running for political office. This context is crucial to the work’s meaning, as Fonda was known for her controversial political activism, particularly her protests against the Vietnam War and advocacy for women’s rights.

Some rare versions of the print are dual-signed by both Andy Warhol and Jane Fonda. On some of these, Fonda also inscribed “Peace, Jane Fonda” (sometimes with the year ’82) on the image or the reverse side, merging her public persona with a message of conviction.
