Rosenthal Tea Set, 1983 (published 1984) (RLCR 3287) | Catalogue entry | Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonné

Contained in a black wooden foam-lined box
With the artist’s printed signature and numbered on the underside of each dish

Set (24 pieces) includes: 1 teapot with lid, 1 creamer, 1 sugar bowl with lid, 6 cups and saucers and 6 dessert plates in a fitted box.

Philip Rosenthal first reached out to Lichtenstein asking about a collaboration in summer 1977. The artist eventually met with the head of product development at Rosenthal GmbH in early 1979 and agreed to produce an edition.

In July 1980 Lichtenstein sent designs for the ceramic forms (not yet the glaze design) that were apparently lost in the mail. After the artist saw and approved trials, a contract was signed in May 1983 with plans to complete the project by November, but manufacturing continued through 1984 when it was decided to reduce the edition from the planned 150 to 100.
