Girl with Balloon Colorways

Girl With Balloon is perhaps Banksy’s most notable and iconic work, demonstrating the graffiti stencil technique he has become renowned for. A 2017 public poll ranked Girl with Balloon as the UK’s number one favorite artwork.
Girl with Balloon depicts a young girl, whose hair and dress are blowing in the wind, reaching for (or releasing) a red, heart-shaped balloon that has slipped from her grasp. The red balloon, as the only spot of color, is an archetypal symbol of childhood and freedom many of us connect with. More than a simple child’s toy, it evokes fragility of what it stands for: innocence, dreams, hope and love.

Well loved by the public and collectors alike, her heartbreaking gesture reaches out to all of us making this one of the most recognizable artworks of the 21st century. This iconic visual first appeared in London’s Southbank in 2002 and was accompanied by the quotation “There is always hope”. Because of this, the work has come to represent both childhood innocence and the importance of maintaining hope, even in the darkest of times. Such themes link Banksy’s work to the French film of 1956, Le ballon rouge (The Red Balloon).
The Oscar-winning short film is set in the streets of post-war Paris, and tells the story of Pascal, a young boy who is followed by a red balloon that appears to have a mind of its own. As in Banksy’s Girl with Balloon, Pascal’s red balloon serves as a symbol of hope and light. 
On 5 October 2018, a 2006 framed Girl with Balloon on canvas was auctioned at Sotheby’s London and sold for GBP 1,042,000, a record high for the artist. Moments after the closing bid, the artwork began to self-destruct by means of a hidden mechanical paper shredder that Banksy had built into the bottom of the frame. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on whom you ask) only the lower half was shredded instead of the entire piece as he intended. The room filled with art collectors looked on in horror and confusion as the canvas began to self-destruct, and countless others were watching the auction unfold online.

Among all contemporary prints, few have achieved the liquidity and visibility of  Girl with Balloon. With more than 90 public auction results over the past six years across every major house, the work functions as a near-perfect barometer of the artist’s market and of the wider print segment itself.

Between 2019 and early 2020, Girl with Balloon (unsigned) typically traded between USD 60,000 and USD 130,000, which was already significant for a recent edition of 600, unsigned. Then, in 2020–2021, global enthusiasm for Banksy collided with speculative demand for multiples, in the context of a market pivoting online granting more access to Banksy prints globally. As a consequence, prices exploded, culminating in record results such as GBP 300,250 (USD 401,000) at Bonhams in London on 15 December 2020,  and an exceptional USD 450,312 at Bonhams in Los Angeles on 24 March 2021. These peaks correspond to a moment when Banksy prints were treated as both accessible art and financial assets.

By mid-2022, the frenzy cooled. Prices settled into a narrower range, typically USD 130,000 to USD 200,000, with fewer dramatic outliers. Remarkably, the print’s extraordinary liquidity persisted, demonstrating an indication of collector confidence, but the speculative premium dissipated as the market matured.

Recent data show remarkable stability. In 2024–2025, Girl with Balloon (unsigned) consistently trades between USD 85,000 and USD 120,000, regardless of edition number, geography or auction house. This equilibrium reflects the market’s normalization: the print has shifted from speculative object to established blue-chip edition, maintaining healthy turnover and international demand across Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Phillips, Bonhams, and Forum Auctions.

In essence, Girl with Balloon (unsigned) has evolved from a speculative trophy into a mature, reference-grade asset within contemporary print collecting. It remains the most traded Banksy print globally, offering clarity, depth, and resilience: three qualities that define a true market classic.

Girl with Balloon & Morons Sepia

A biting example of Banksy’s satirical oeuvre, Girl with Balloon & Morons Sepia is a double-sided composition boasting two of the artist’s most famous images: Girl with Balloon and Morons. On the recto, Girl with Balloon depicts a young girl extending her hand toward a red heart-shaped balloon, carried away by the wind. To the reverse, a crowd of art collectors is shown gathered around an auctioneer who, mid-performance, gestures toward a large, gilt-framed canvas. When held up to light, Girl with Balloon and Morons Sepia magically fuse into a single composition, transporting the young girl into the sale room, and creating a mirror effect between her extended arm and that of the auctioneer. Forming part of an edition of 8 works, the present work is nonetheless rendered unique by the artist’s spray painting of the young girl’s figure to the front of the work – a feat that distinguishes it from Banksy’s other editions of Girl with Balloon and Morons.
