In December 2022, AllRightsReserved marked its 20th anniversary by releasing a full set of twelve KAWS bronze sculptures through its DDT Store platform. Each piece reimagined a past design in cast bronze with a deep matte black finish, from HOLIDAY poses to smaller-scale Companion and BFF forms. The sculptures were engineered as “phygital” collectibles, arriving with a custom wood box, signed certificate of authenticity, and an NFC chip linking to a blockchain token for provenance.

This group of twelve bronze figures by KAWS marks a decisive moment in the artist’s evolution: the shift from singular icons to a fully articulated system of characters, emotions, and gestures. Unlike earlier works which each operate as standalone figures, this set must be understood as a constellation. It is not one sculpture repeated, but a curated ensemble of distinct poses and identities, brought together into a unified language. The edition of 250 reinforces this logic: not unique objects, but a controlled, serialized vocabulary.

Introduction

What immediately distinguishes this set is the extraordinary range of postures. We encounter seated figures, reclining bodies, characters covering their faces, others holding smaller companions, and even variations that introduce fur-like textures, expanding the traditional smooth surface of KAWS’ forms. Some figures appear contemplative, others exhausted, others withdrawn or protective.

KAWS is no longer presenting a single emotional archetype; he is mapping a spectrum of states. The recurrence of gestures—hands covering the face, bodies folded inward, figures lying down—creates a rhythm across the set. It is almost choreographic, as if each sculpture represents a moment within a larger emotional sequence.

The choice of bronze is particularly significant here. Unlike earlier vinyl editions that emphasized accessibility and circulation, bronze anchors these figures in permanence. It stabilizes what would otherwise be fleeting gestures. The soft, cartoon-derived forms are translated into a material historically associated with monumentality and endurance. Yet KAWS avoids traditional monumentality. The scale remains intimate, and the matte black finish absorbs light rather than dramatizing it. This restraint keeps the focus on form and posture rather than spectacle. The result is a paradox: ephemeral emotions rendered in permanent material.

This set represents a fundamental shift in KAWS’ practice, from icon to narrative. Earlier figures functioned as symbols: immediately recognizable, self-contained, almost logo-like. Here, meaning emerges through accumulation. Each figure gains resonance in relation to the others.

The presence of multiple characters—some interacting, some isolated—introduces the idea of relational space. A figure holding another suggests care or dependency; a figure lying down suggests exhaustion or withdrawal; a figure covering its face suggests refusal or avoidance. Taken together, the set reads almost like a silent narrative of contemporary emotional life.

Despite this expansion, the core vocabulary remains intact. The “XX” eyes persist as a unifying element, maintaining the sense of emotional opacity that defines KAWS’ work. The rounded anatomy, the simplified limbs, and the cartoon lineage all remain present. However, they are now deployed with greater subtlety. The figures are less about recognition and more about variation. Familiarity gives way to nuance. One also observes the integration of elements from earlier bodies of work. The introspection of Companion, the complicity and withdrawal of Accomplice, and the volumetric logic of Chum all converge within this ensemble. This set, in a way, synthesizes the entire KAWS universe into a single sculptural composition.

At its core, this group functions as a kind of emotional atlas. There is no single message, no overt narrative. Instead, the work accumulates meaning through repetition and variation. Each figure captures a state that is at once highly specific and broadly recognizable. The absence of facial expression, erased by the crossed-out eyes, forces the viewer to read the body. Emotion is conveyed through posture rather than features. This shift transforms the figures into mirrors rather than characters. In a broader sense, the set reflects a contemporary condition marked by introspection, fatigue, and fragmented connection. The figures coexist, yet rarely engage directly. Even when grouped, they remain psychologically separate.

This 2022 bronze set stands among the most sophisticated sculptural developments in KAWS’ career. It moves beyond the immediacy of the single figure and into a more complex, almost curatorial approach to form. It suggests that KAWS is no longer simply producing objects, but constructing systems—networks of meaning that unfold across multiple works. If Companion established the icon, and Chum explored appropriation, this set introduces something more mature: a language of variation, relation, and quiet narrative. It is, in many ways, KAWS at his most controlled—and perhaps his most revealing.
