On is Lichtenstein’s first commissioned print and his first Pop print. The plate was worked by Lichtenstein in his studio and then sent to Arturo Schwarz, who sent it to the printer.

The International Anthology of Contemporary Engraving was published in seven volumes (2 volumes called The Forerunners of the Avant-Garde and 5 volumes called The International Avant-Garde). The artists included in each volume were selected by Schwarz (listed in the colophon by his pen name Tristan Sauvage), with the exception of volume 5, which was selected by Schwarz and Billy Klüver.

Contributing artists were George Brecht, Allan D’Arcangelo, Jim Dine, Stephen Durkee, Letty Eisenhauer, Stanley Fisher, Sam Goodman, Red Grooms, Robert Indiana, Allan Kaprow, Roy Lichtenstein, Boris Lurie, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, George Segal, Richard Stankiewicz, Wayne Thiebaud, Robert Watts, and Robert Whitman.
