Mt. Fuji in Seven Colors (富士は七色), is a set of seven distinct woodcut prints, each depicting Mount Fuji in a different vibrant color scheme. The series uses traditional Japanese woodcut (ukiyo-e) printmaking techniques.

Introduction

Each print from the series is an abstract mountain landscape that re-imagines Mount Fuji using Kusama’s signature motifs. The majestic outline of the mountain is depicted with bold brushstrokes, while the sky and parts of the mountain are filled with thousands of hand-carved, unique polka dots and infinity net patterns, creating a dynamic visual texture. A smiling sun motif, incorporating solid gold, appears in some prints. The series features seven color variants, including notably green, orange, yellow and red coming with titles incorporating specific colors or poetic phrases.

Each of the seven colors gives Mt. Fuji a different expression

Mount Fuji, a symbol of Japan and a World Cultural Heritage site since 2013, has been a traditional subject in Japanese art (ukiyo-e) for centuries. Kusama’s interpretation blends this traditional Japanese theme with her contemporary aesthetic, expressing the mountain’s “exceptional life force” and majesty through her unique visual language of polka dots and bold colors. The works are based on a painting Kusama created after her first encounter with Mount Fuji at close range, an experience that “totally captivated” her. The woodblock prints were produced by skilled carvers who meticulously translated Kusama’s painting, including the thousands of intricate polka dots, into the traditional ukiyo-e format, demonstrating a fusion of modern Japanese art and traditional craftsmanship.

The theme of these contemporary ukiyo-e is Mt. Fuji, the symbol of Japan. This majestic mountain, which was inscribed on the List of World Cultural Heritage Sites in 2013, has been the subject of ukiyo-e and many other arts since olden times. These works are based on a painting that Ms. Kusama created in a moment of inspiration when, during her first encounter with Mt. Fuji at close range, she was totally captivated by the mountain. The artworks depict Mt. Fuji’s exceptional life force and its majestic solo summit by highlighting the mountain’s broad base and soaring peak.

Carving the Rhythm of the Artist’s Breath into the Woodcut
Immersed in the Ever-Multiplying Polka Dots

Ms. Kusama is known as the “Queen of the Polka Dot.” For her, the polka dot pattern symbolizes self-obliteration as she becomes immersed in the endlessly multiplying polka dots. Chikura Kishi is the young Adachi carver whose task was to carve the 14,685 polka dots that make up the sky. He created the woodblock by immersing himself in the polka dots and merging with the painting as he felt Ms. Kusama’s brushwork in the uniqueness of each dot.
