One of the most significant subjects in the artist’s legendary oeuvre, Jackie Kennedy is emblematic of many of the themes which made Warhol one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Following the assassination of her husband John F. Kennedy in 1964, Jackie, in the wake of this deeply personal tragedy, came under the spotlight of mass media. Under the microscope of the tabloids and newspapers, Jackie unwittingly became the nation’s emotional barometer in the months following her husband’s death. And so Warhol, always fascinated by the intersection of media, fame, and tragedy, began collecting images of Jackie that he found in the news.

Warhol’s repetition of the images captures how the media coverage blinded the nation to Jackie’s singular grief while injecting a deep sadness in the rest of the country. For Warhol Jackie Kennedy became a symbol of the way mass media dehumanizes its subjects and numbs its audiences to real-world tragedies. In this sense, Warhol’s paintings of Jackie, just like his paintings of Marilyn Monroe following the actress’ suicide, are closely related to his paintings of car crashes, race riots, and electric chairs which comprise his Death and Disaster series.

Jackie II, 1966
Screen-print on Plexiglas
24×30 inches (60.6 x 75.9 cm)
This work is one of 3 known reverse screen-prints on Plexiglas from this series
Speaking on the nonstop, seemingly inescapable broadcasting of Jackie’s likeness in the wake of the shooting, Warhol said, “It seemed like no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t get away from the thing…” (Andy Warhol quoted in: Pat Hackett, POPism: The Warhol Sixties, 1980). In the present work, Jackie appears twice against a lavender backdrop, gazing out beyond the viewer’s space. Her quiet, melancholy expression captures both the sadness and emotional distance. Jackie II is also unique for its medium, one of just a handful of works the artist executed on plexiglass. Moreover, this screen used for this work is the only version of Warhol’s Jackie portraits to depict the First Lady twice, echoing his dual portraits of Elvis Presley which were executed during the same period.
