In making the screenprints in the Reflections series, Lichtenstein appropriated imagery from his past works, and particularly from comic book sources, returning to subject matter he had addressed in the 1960s. Lichtenstein’s approach in these reflection works can therefore be read as a witty comment on the techniques of pop artists who themselves quoted and reused imagery found in popular culture, and perhaps an acknowledgement that his own work had entered into popularized visual culture.

Introduction
Roy Lichtenstein gained inspiration for the Reflections Series from photographs that he took of a glass-covered Robert Rauschenberg print: streaks of light obscured areas of the work but left enough of the print visible that the scene could be understood. Ben-Day dots, a signature of Lichtenstein’s work borrowed from mass-media cartoons, were also added to these images to foster a duality between Pop and Fine art. However, in each print, the focal illustration is partially concealed by smooth, mirror-like metalized PVC. The textural combination of collage, woodcut relief and embossing on top of screen-print and lithography constructs a methodical scene: one of certainty and ambiguity that invites the viewer to create his or her own interpretation.
“It started when I tried to photograph a print by Robert Rauschenberg that was under glass. But the light from a window reflected on the surface of the glass and prevented me from taking a good picture. But it gave me the idea of photographing fairly well-known works under glass, where the reflection would hide most of the work, but you could still make out what the subject was. Well, I tried to do a few photographs in this manner; but I am not much of a photographer. Later the idea occurred to me to do the same idea in painting; and I started this series on various early works of mine … It portrays a painting under glass. It is framed and the glass is preventing you from seeing the painting. Of course, the reflections are just an excuse to make an abstract work, with the cartoon image being supposedly partly hidden by the reflections.”

Lichtenstein’s Reflections began as a series of three paintings of the comic book character Wimpy in 1988 and evolved to reference some of the most iconic works of his own oeuvre. After working through his ideas on canvas, Lichtenstein took this concept to the printing press at Tyler Graphics, Ltd. in Mount Kisco, New York from 1989 to 1990. As a student at Ohio State University, Lichtenstein experimented with mixing several techniques into one print – developing a sophisticated understanding of the unique mark-making potential of each medium. It is no surprise that throughout his career he continued to use his deft understanding of printmaking to manipulate multiple techniques to obtain his desired visual effect. Taking advantage of the extensive facilities of Tyler Graphics and Ken Tyler’s innovative approach to printmaking. All prints from Reflections series contain elements of lithography, Screenprinting, woodcut, and metalized collage on an impressive scale.
Lichtenstein created a group of seven Reflections prints which he worked on at Tyler Graphics in Mount Kisco, New York during 1989 and 1990. These prints are recorded in the artist’s catalogue raisonné and described as combining ‘lithography, screenprint, and relief with collage and embossing. In all the Reflection prints, the image is partly obscured by semi-abstract blocks of color and pattern which simulate reflected light, as if the image is seen behind glass or reflected in another surface. The idea was developed by Lichtenstein in a group of paintings he started in 1988 and which he continued to work on until 1993. Speaking of the paintings series in 1995, the artist explained:

Reflections on Crash is rich with the dynamic narration and subtle mystery that Lichtenstein’s works are so famous for. We are presented with a dramatic scene, ruled by a bold action bubble containing the word CRASH. At the bottom left is the sharp-featured face of a pilot whose diagonal gaze leads to a plane at the right side of the piece. Bold slanted stripes of reflective material slice the composition and bring the viewer closer into the action of the work by taking on a reflection of whatever setting the work is in. Reflections on Crash explores the connection between commercial imagery, story telling, art, and the viewer.

Reflections on Conversation offers a visually and thematically layered composition that exemplifies the bold, iconic style of the artist. The reflection has dual meaning in the visual context of the Reflections series: it not only refers to the stylized reflective streaks integrated into each image, but it also alludes to the way those reflective streaks obscure certain features in the image and encourage contemplation or reflection about the highlighted parts. The reflective streaks in this image obscure the mouths of the two figures, which highlights their eyes as they look into each other’s face. As a result, the eyes of the figures become the focal point of this work, framing visual communication as a mode of conversation. Lichtenstein reinforces the reflective theme of the series through the glasses on the figure to the right, which has a lens with highlights of its own.

Reflections on Hair is a playful work of art indicative of graphic imagery such as comics and advertisements. Lichtenstein’s iconic theme of comic-like works is a running vein throughout his vast oeuvre. Reflections is important in that Lichtenstein incorporates multimedia and relates to his Mirrors paintings of the early seventies. Dots, stripes, mirrors, foils, and brushstrokes are used in this seven print series. Lichtenstein extends the use of reflective foil that adds a metallic texture. Reflections on Hair guides us through his pioneering style of Pop art, inclusively drawing each one of his onlookers in. Creatively exploring his own unique style and language, Lichtenstein arouses a kind of dialogue with the art as well as the viewer. Evolved in various ways, the narrative quality that is enhanced throughout this series creates depth into his artistry as a print maker. Holding a tight composition with complex figurations of colorful and petite dots, Roy Lichtenstein produces an enigmatic work of art.

Reflections on Brushstrokes incorporates his iconic multimedia imagery, flowing with eclectic and imaginative sequence of shapes. Bright colors of neon yellow, blue, gray, and green intertwine against each other creating a strong contrasting effect. Shapes and forms are irregularly placed within a rectangular frame allowing the composition to stand out. Lichtenstein’s famous dots are dispersed along the cream colored block running through mainly the center of the image. This creates a comic-like effect that is a common theme throughout his entire oeuvre.

In Reflections on the Scream, Lichtenstein crafted a playful double entendre with his title and imagery. Returning to the comic book imagery so evocative of the Pop movement of the 1960s, the baby Swee’pea from Popeye takes center stage. The iconic nightgown identifies the infant within American pop culture, but by composing the image with Swee’Pea’s head thrown back our focus is directed to the wide-open mouth and the emotion within the scene. With several artfully placed diagonal lines radiating from Swee’Pea’s head, it’s difficult to look at this work and not feel the visceral reaction of a baby wailing. Lichtenstein’s masterful choice of medium is seen here in the choice of woodcut to render the abstracted mouth. The organic woodgrain texture of the woodblock comes through and perfectly captures the raw emotion, heightening the sense of drama in the piece. While the imagery goes back to the 1960s, the title of the print dates back another half a century and references Edvard Munch’s The Scream. As one of the most recognizable images of the modern era, this painting, brimming with emotion, speaks to anxiety and fear within the human experience. The Scream has been parodied and reproduced commercially world-wide and Lichtenstein’s reference to the masterpiece was more than just tongue and cheek. Decades into his own successful art career, Lichtenstein found his own works gracing t-shirts, calendars, and other gift-shop ephemera – much like Munch’s masterpiece. In addition to the literal use of reflective materials and inspiration drawn from seeing a reflection on glass, self-reflection has always been an important element of Lichtenstein’s work.

The original source for this Reflections print was the November-December 1948 edition of the comic book ‘Wonder Woman’, illustrated by Harry G. Peter. The eponymous super-heroine is shown with a speech bubble exclaiming her catchphrase, ‘Merciful Minerva!’. Wonder Woman regularly invoked the Roman goddess Minerva who was traditionally known as the goddess of wisdom but also encompassed the arts, trade, poetry, and later, war.

Reflections on Girl features the profile of a female face obscured and divided by diagonal streaks of stylized reflections. The reflection has dual meaning in the visual context of the Reflections series: it not only refers to the stylized reflective streaks integrated into each image, but it also alludes to the way those reflective streaks obscure certain features in the image and encourage contemplation or reflection about the highlighted parts. The reflective streaks in this image not only cut across the face of the female figure’s cheek and the back of her head, but they also cut through the text of the thought bubbles. The expression on the figure’s downturned face appears dejected, and the words of “kiss” and “love” peeking out from behind a red-striped reflection allude to romantic troubles as the source of sadness.
