Released in 1987, Pop Shop I stands as one of Keith Haring’s most emblematic print portfolios: a direct extension of the philosophy that defined his practice. Issued one year after the opening of his first Pop Shop in downtown Manhattan, the series embodies his ambition to dissolve the boundary between high art and popular culture. Conceived as both collectible works and widely accessible images, these prints reflect Haring’s conviction that art should circulate freely, beyond the confines of galleries and institutions.

Introduction
The Precision of Energy
Pop Shop I exemplifies Haring’s complete mastery of screen printing as a medium. Printed in five layers of color (black, red, blue, magenta, and yellow) the works achieve a remarkable clarity and saturation. The thick black contour, applied last, unifies the composition and reinforces the immediacy of the figures. Though he had experimented with print techniques such as lithography in the late 70s and 80s it wasn’t until 1983 that Haring began making screen prints, or serigraphs, which offered a way of creating multiple images, that artists had adopted from the world of commercial printing.
“I could earn more money if I just painted a few things and jacked up the price. My shop is an extension of what I was doing in the subway stations, breaking down the barriers between high and low art”.

Screenprinting, adopted from commercial production and popularized by figures such as Andy Warhol, allowed Haring to reproduce his imagery with consistency while preserving its graphic intensity. Unlike the spontaneity of his subway drawings, these prints are meticulously calibrated. Yet they retain the illusion of speed: the lines vibrate, the figures pulse, and the compositions seem to move. What emerges is a paradox central to Haring’s practice: an art that feels immediate and spontaneous, yet is constructed through highly controlled, repeatable processes.
The Pop Shop as Ideology
Pop Shop I was released a year after Haring opened his first Pop Shop in downtown Manhattan. Aimed at kids and collectors alike, the Pop Shops were a place where Haring could sell his art for as little as 50 cents. The store stocked t-shirts, badges and magnets featuring his now ubiquitous designs. The Pop Shop itself was not merely a retail space: it was a conceptual project. By offering objects at accessible prices, Haring extended the logic of his street work into a permanent environment. As he famously noted, the shop was a continuation of his subway practice: an attempt to break down the hierarchy between elite and everyday audiences.

TSENG KWONG CHI (1950-1990), Keith Haring at the Pop Shop, c. 1985
While the project was praised by friends such as Andy Warhol who was fascinated by the possibilities of the work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction, it was snubbed by many leading art world figures who placed more value on original works of art. Yet it is precisely this tension that gives Pop Shop I its enduring relevance. The portfolio does not simply depict Haring’s visual language: it enacts his philosophy.

TSENG KWONG CHI (1950-1990), Keith Haring at the Pop Shop, c. 1985
His love for commercial and Pop art was evident in his first experiments with street art which saw him creating signature figures he named ‘icons’, such as the barking dog, the radiant child and the winged superman. He would reproduce these figures over and over again, in bright colors reminiscent of advertising and later, just before his death from AIDS in 1990, in plain white embossings.
Pop Shop I Plate 1
The first plate of Pop Shop I, widely known as Best Buddies, is arguably the most iconic image of the entire portfolio and one of the most recognizable compositions in Keith Haring’s oeuvre. The composition presents two simplified figures standing side by side, their arms wrapped around each other’s shoulders. Their bodies lean inward, forming a compact, unified structure. Above their heads, short radiating lines suggest energy, warmth, and emotional intensity, while the turquoise background amplifies the clarity and immediacy of the scene.

What distinguishes Best Buddies is its absolute directness. There is no ambiguity here: the image conveys friendship, solidarity, and mutual support with disarming simplicity. The figures are equal in scale and posture, reinforcing a sense of balance and reciprocity. Unlike many of Haring’s more dynamic or chaotic compositions, this one is grounded, almost still: its strength lies in its restraint.
Formally, the work exemplifies Haring’s visual language at its most distilled. Thick black outlines define the bodies, while flat, saturated colors eliminate any illusion of depth. The figures are not individuals but symbols: open, universal, and immediately legible. Within the context of Pop Shop I, Best Buddies functions as a conceptual anchor. It establishes the core theme of the series, human connection, before the subsequent plates introduce movement, complexity, and tension. It is both an entry point and a statement: a clear articulation of Haring’s belief in community, equality, and shared energy.
Pop Shop I Plate 2
The second plate shifts from stillness to action. Three figures, two in turquoise flanking a central yellow figure, raise their arms upward, forming a triangular structure. The central figure appears suspended or lifted, creating a sense of collective elevation.

The background, now red, intensifies the composition, while the upward movement introduces a vertical dynamic absent from the first plate. The figures are no longer simply connected: they are engaged in a shared act. This is not merely celebration. It evokes ritual, cooperation, and the idea of collective empowerment. The central figure is supported, even exalted, by the others, suggesting a community in which strength is distributed rather than isolated.
Pop Shop I Plate 3
The third plate introduces tension. A central yellow figure stands upright, arms raised, while two lateral figures extend their arms toward it, penetrating or activating its body. Radiating lines emphasize the point of contact, transforming the gesture into a moment of impact.

The background shifts to purple, a more ambiguous and charged color, reinforcing the intensity of the scene. Unlike the previous compositions, this one is not immediately harmonious. It suggests interaction at a deeper, more complex level: exchange, intrusion, or transformation. This plate is often read as a metaphor for energy transfer: physical, emotional, or even societal. Haring does not clarify whether this is supportive or invasive. The ambiguity is deliberate.
Pop Shop I Plate 4
The fourth plate presents a two-figure composition structured vertically, built around a clear act of lifting. A purple figure occupies the lower register, arms raised upward, supporting a turquoise figure positioned horizontally above, whose body stretches across the width of the image. The background is a flat, saturated yellow, eliminating any spatial depth and intensifying the contrast between the two figures. The composition is anchored by a narrow patterned band at the bottom, while black motion lines around the lower figure’s arms emphasize effort and vibration.

The interaction is explicit: this is not parallel movement, nor symbolic alignment—it is physical support. The lower figure bears the weight of the upper one, whose outstretched body suggests suspension, elevation, or even display. The turquoise figure is passive, almost object-like, while the purple figure is active, engaged in the act of lifting. Formally, the composition is extremely efficient. Haring reduces the scene to its essential gesture: one figure raising another. The thick black contour stabilizes the image, while the color contrast—purple against yellow, turquoise against both—creates a sharp visual hierarchy.
Within the structure of Pop Shop I, this plate introduces a different type of relationship than Best Buddies. Where Plate 1 is about equality and mutual support, Plate 4 introduces asymmetry. One figure carries, the other is carried. This shift is important. It expands Haring’s vocabulary of connection from simple unity to dependency, care, or even burden. The ambiguity remains open: the act can be read as assistance, celebration, sacrifice, or strain.
A Language of Universality
Across the four plates, Haring constructs a visual narrative without words. The figures are anonymous, stripped of identity markers, yet instantly recognizable. They function as universal symbols—open enough to accommodate multiple readings, yet precise enough to communicate directly. Themes of community, cooperation, energy, and transformation run throughout the series. The repetition of forms reinforces the idea that these are not individual moments, but part of a broader system—a visual language of human interaction.
At the same time, the simplicity of the imagery conceals a deeper complexity. The works oscillate between harmony and tension, support and intrusion, individuality and collectivity. Haring does not resolve these contradictions; he presents them as inherent to human experience. More broadly, Pop Shop I represents a defining moment in late 20th-century art, when the boundaries between art, commerce, and public space were actively being redefined. It is not simply a series of prints—it is a manifesto, articulated through color, line, and repetition.
