Edgar Plans has established himself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary figurative painting, developing a practice that merges childlike imagery with complex social narratives. His work is immediately recognizable for its bold colors, simplified forms, and recurring characters—wide-eyed figures that oscillate between innocence and quiet tension. Operating at the intersection of popular culture, street art, and contemporary painting, Plans constructs a visual language that is both accessible and layered. Beneath the apparent simplicity lies a structured and thoughtful engagement with themes such as environmental awareness, conflict, and collective responsibility.
Table of Contents
Introduction
Edgar Plans was born in 1977 in Madrid, Spain, and raised in Asturias, where he continues to live and work. Initially trained in sociology, his path toward painting developed outside of traditional academic frameworks, which remains evident in the intuitive and direct nature of his work.

From early on, Plans positioned himself within a visual territory that resists strict categorization. His paintings draw equally from illustration, comics, and contemporary art, creating a hybrid language that bridges high and low culture. This positioning has allowed his work to resonate across a wide audience, from seasoned collectors to a younger generation attuned to visual immediacy.
Artistic Practice and Technique
Plans works primarily in acrylic on canvas, employing a direct and spontaneous approach that emphasizes clarity of form and immediacy of execution. His compositions are typically frontal and densely populated, with flat backgrounds and sharply outlined figures. While the visual language appears simple, it is carefully calibrated to create strong compositional balance and immediate visual impact.
His surfaces often retain visible traces of process—uneven lines, layered applications of paint, and subtle variations in color density. This lends the works a sense of authenticity and reinforces their handmade quality. Unlike heavily reworked painterly practices, Plans favors a more decisive execution, where each mark contributes to a clear and legible image.
In addition to painting, he has expanded into sculpture and installation, translating his two-dimensional characters into three-dimensional forms. These works maintain the same visual vocabulary while introducing a physical presence that reinforces the universality of his figures.
Visual Language and Major Series
In his mixed-media works, Edgar Plans places his mouse-eared, big-eyed cartoon characters against backdrops adorned with doodles and scrawl. These apparently spontaneous marks recall the canvases of Jean-Michel Basquiat, or Cy Twombly; the Spanish-born and -based Plans names graffiti, street art, comic books, illustrations, and animated films as major influences. Yet it’s really his characters, which Plans describes as “Hero Animals,” which have helped the artist win popularity and a number of gallery shows around Spain. Plans’ work has found high demand on the secondary market; his paintings have sold for six figures. Despite their vibrant color palette and cartoon-indebted aesthetics, Plans’ paintings tackle serious subject matter: With his animal heroes, he intends to criticize gender violence, racism, and envy.
Animal Heroes
The Animal Heroes series forms the conceptual foundation of Plans’s practice. These characters operate as protectors or witnesses within imagined scenarios that reflect real-world concerns. Despite their playful appearance, they are frequently placed in contexts that allude to environmental degradation, war, or social imbalance. First coming into fruition in 2006, Plans’ Animal Heroes series reflects the artist’s outstanding ability in portraying instant visual narratives in his oeuvre, typified by the variety of expressions and actions of the little heroes. These characters encompass a range of emotions such as joy, mischief and play – elements that define Plans’ celebrated oeuvre. Seemingly innocently at play, these light-hearted illustrations are in fact a commentary on socio-political issues of racism, gender equality and climate change. Through the creation of his personal heroes, the artist demonstrates a yearning for the ability to make one’s dreams come true with heroes of his own creations. Plans also aims to empower and urge everyone to take action against injustice, becoming heroes in their own right.
“The Animal Heroes arise from my intention to create pictures of denunciation in favor of the environment, to denounce the human actions that contaminate, destroy and poke the planet. In turn these heroes have simple powers that today’s society is losing as they are solidarity, companionship, respect… and these animals through art and their actions want to reintroduce people.”
The strength of this series lies in its dual readability. On one level, the works are immediately engaging and visually appealing. On another, they carry a more reflective dimension, inviting viewers to consider the underlying narratives embedded within the compositions.
Narrative Compositions
Many of Plans’s paintings develop as narrative scenes, where multiple figures interact within a single composition. These works often incorporate symbolic elements—bombs, trees, clouds, or abstracted landscapes—that introduce layers of meaning without disrupting the clarity of the image. The compositions are carefully orchestrated despite their apparent simplicity. Figures are arranged to guide the viewer’s eye across the surface, creating a rhythm that balances repetition and variation.
Sculptural Works
In recent years, Plans has extended his visual language into sculpture, producing large-scale versions of his characters. These works retain the essential features of his paintings while emphasizing volume and presence. Installed in both gallery and public contexts, they reinforce the accessibility of his work while expanding its spatial dimension.

Influences and Context
Plans’s work draws from a wide range of influences, including comic books, animation, street art, and contemporary visual culture. At the same time, his practice can be situated within a broader lineage of artists who have employed simplified or naïve aesthetics to address complex themes.
There are echoes of artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat in the use of direct imagery and symbolic layering, as well as affinities with contemporary street art in the immediacy of execution and clarity of message. However, Plans distinguishes himself through a consistent commitment to a cohesive and highly recognizable visual vocabulary.
His work reflects a contemporary condition shaped by image saturation and rapid communication. By reducing forms to their essentials, he creates compositions that function almost as visual statements—concise, legible, and open to interpretation.
Institutional Recognition and Exhibitions
Edgar Plans has exhibited extensively in galleries and institutions across Europe, Asia, and the United States. His work has been particularly well received in Asia, where he has developed a strong collector base and institutional visibility. Edgar Plans’ works are also in public collections such as the Caixa Foundation, Masaveu Foundation, Illuro Foundation, the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, Spain, and the Contemporary Art Museum La Habana, Cuba. Edgar Plans is represented by Alzueta Gallery, Barcelona and Padre Gallery, New York & Moscow.
His exhibitions have taken place in major cultural centers including Paris, Shanghai, Seoul, and New York, reflecting the global resonance of his work. While his institutional presence is still developing, his trajectory suggests a growing integration into museum and public collections.
Gallery Representation
Edgar Plans is represented by Alzueta Gallery, which has played a central role in the development of his career and continues to support his work internationally. His market has also been significantly driven by a strong network of galleries and collectors in Asia, where his work has achieved particular resonance.
Plans occupies a distinctive position within the current landscape of contemporary painting. By combining immediacy with subtle complexity, he has developed a practice that resonates across different audiences while maintaining a strong and coherent artistic identity.

The artwork features a graffiti-laden background that resembles a miniature cityscape. Plans combines his love for street art and children’s illustration, both of which he considers “especially free forms of art.” Behind the colorful and vibrant imagery, the artist conveys his observations and commentary on social and political issues.
“My animal heroes are intended to be used to criticize human destruction of the Earth, resistance against gender violence, racism, and negative emotions like envy.”
In “Home Sweet Home,” the superheroes are depicted on a maze-like structure constructed from ladders and platforms. They are freely drawing with colored pencils or looking around to find their way. In the background, there are scribbled phrases like “Paris Can Wait” and “Wrong Way,” which are in line with the theme. “Paris Can Wait” is a reference to a film with the same name, which portrays the female protagonist, Anne, coming to terms with the past and rediscovering hope during an unexpected journey. The artwork appears to capture a sense of adventure and exploration, perhaps echoing the idea that life’s path can sometimes take unexpected and transformative turns. In the hustle and bustle of a life filled with one destination after another, Plans’ superheroes pick up their paint brushes to color their surroundings with their inner aspirations. “To me, kindness and the ability to warm people’s hearts are the true powers that heroes should possess,” he says. These heroes, with their innocence, goodness, and fearless hearts, bring a heartwarming power to the cold gray world. They represent the artist’s yearning for spiritual freedom and the belief in the transformative and uplifting impact of kindness on the world.

Edgar Plans’ artistic style resonates with the Contemporary Faux Naïf movement, which aims to access unadulterated creative expression through childlike art or art brut. By blending Street Art with children’s and comic book illustration, Plans breaks free from the artificiality of culture and presents us with a raw aesthetic reminiscent of the bold graffiti tags of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and the playfulness of Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara. This work features Plan’s iconic “Animal Heroes” wearing colorful masks over their big expressive eyes, along with the layering of line, form, color, and a spirited narrative. The Animal Heroes frolic across the canvas leaving color splatters, graffiti, and used paint tubes within a Mondrian-inspired backdrop.

Mixed media on canvas

Signed ‘Plans’ lower left
Signed, titled and dated ‘”Night Creatures” Plans 2020’ on the reverse
Monumental in scale, Night Creatures is the largest work by the artist to come to auction. Intentionally playful, Plans harnesses the boundless creativity of children’s drawings in the current work, returning to simple visual cues that reflect a form of pure artistic expression. Yet, the intricate layering of a variety of mediums and interwoven visual planes demonstrate a refined practice that references Plans’ historical influences and showcases his ingenious improvisational skills.

Central to Plans’ practice is the ‘Hero’ figure, defined by their mouse-like round ears and colorful masks. Often holding spray paint cans and torches, these little heroes wander through the night, scribbling on the walls. Shadows of these characters are sometimes mismatched from their actual silhouettes, introducing a playful and surreal element to the artist’s composition.

In the current work, a blue multi-eyed creature stands against a towering abstract backdrop filled with intricate doodles, as it sputters glowing neon bubbles upwards in the air. A whole cast of figures above are running along a labyrinth-like ladder system that is evocative of fellow Spanish artist Joan Miró’s Surrealist landscapes, passing paint brushes to each other or running open armed with a tube of red paint. Alluding to a wide array of references to the night, Plans scrawls words such as ‘MOON’, ‘3m2 dream area’ (with a bed), ‘dracula’, ‘Hooo Hooo’, ‘dark dark choo’, ‘night coffee’ (with a figure holding a cup), echoing the works title. These scribbles unfold across the surface, conveying an unbridled sense of freedom.

Don’t Forget to Live My Life, 2019
Oil, oilstick, graphite, colored pencil and ballpoint pen on canvas
180.3 x 180.3 cm (71×71 inches)
Harnessing the boundless creativity of childhood, Don’t forget to live my life, executed in 2019, presents an enthralling image from the hand of the Spanish artist Edgar Plans. Central to this imagined work is the figure of the artist’s hero, a masked mouse, standing against an immense backdrop filled with entrancing doodles and sketches unfolding across the surface. Acting as an extension for the artist’s hand, the mouse gazes at his self-portrait, adorned with a crown, the artistic hero gazes upon the vast and tantalizing universe he has created. An unbridled cosmos containing a wide array of referential elements to pop culture and his own practice, Edgar Plans, places graffiti, street art, comic books and illustrations, as foundational elements for his transformative practice. Inhabited by sketches of his Lil’ Heroes the monumental wall of drawings directly quotes the late creations of Jean-Michel Basquiat, through an exercise brimming with referentiality, reverie and an unbridled sense of freedom.

Echoing the contemporary Faux Naif movement, the artist seeks to assess a pure artistic expression. Reminiscent of the unrepentant style of the art brut of Jean Dubuffet and the vibrant childlike ideations of Joan Miro, Plans develops a unique visual strategy through the blending of a masterful practice drenched in the effervescence of pop culture. Don’t Forget to live my life presents us with a visual vocabulary that entrances us through its spontaneity. The intricate layering of graffiti and chalk demonstrates a refined practice that references Plans’ historical influences and ingenious improvisation. Captivating the viewer with utter spontaneity in Don’t forget to live my life, Edgar Plan’s work has been met with critical acclaim. His recent venture into the metaverse, through the creation of NFT’s of his Lil’ Heroes, has catapulted him to the forefront of virtual painting, while enjoying solo exhibitions in the Moscow Museum of Art, and a recent show in Almine Reich in Paris. Tackling his imagination and boundless creativity, Don’t forget to live my life presents an ingenious window into Edgar Plan’s astounding illustrative world on an impressively grand scale that rivals his painterly ambitions as an artist for the new generations.

Edgar Plans was born in Madrid, Spain in 1977. He was encouraged to create by his father when he was a child, back then the streets and sidewalks are indeed his canvas and began his career in graffiti art. Ever since he has been influenced and inspired by graffiti, street art, comics, illustration and animation, his works are childlike, full of imagination and vitality. His creation is mostly childish, with young children dressed as superheroes as the protagonists, clearly is closely related to his father, Juan José Plans, being the famous sci-fi writer in Spain. Among them, the best known “Animals Heroes” series has won the love of fans all over the world. The little heroes in this series of works have a pair of mouse ears, with big and round lovely eyes. They are playful, filled with innocence and cuteness. They no longer bear the responsibility of saving the world, but accompany the world and imagination of children. The universe, which is full of dreams, also reflects Plans’s spirit in freedom-loving, never giving up and the chivalry in always ready to embark on a new adventure.

Tribute to Graffiti Artists at Eighties was created in 2019. It is visible that Plans applied acrylic pigments as if building up like a wall. The little heroes at the bottom left of the painting represent Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Al Diaz and Lee Quinones. They sit along together and surrounded with all kinds of cute graffiti elements, Basquiat’s iconic crown motif, and the names of these four artists. Pigments and brushes are scattered in the center of the painting, and a lively and vivacious puppy is playing. On the top of the painting, there are classic elements of these 1980s’ artists, such as the well-known iconography of Keith Haring “Radiant Baby”, the symbol “SAMO” collaborated between Jean-Michel Basquiat and Al Diaz, also notations as “Street art” and “Subway” in subway art. On the top left of the painting, there is a pot of blooming flowers, also with big and round lovely eyes, symbolizing the homage to these four top graffiti artists in the 1980s.

My Little Monster Loves Balloons is exemplary of Edgar Plans’ typically expressive, lively, and childlike style that has gained the Spanish artist his flourishing international reputation. Plans’ cartoon figures, known as ‘Animal Heroes,’ are seemingly innocently at play, with their mouse-shaped ears, highlighted in bright colours and set within a graffiti inspired environment. These seemingly light-hearted illustrations are in fact a commentary on socio-political concerns grazing issues of racism, gender equality and climate change.
Echoing the Contemporary Faux Naïf movement, Plans attempts to reform art’s staid standards of beauty by reverting to considered primal or elementary beginnings. By creating works in this way, the artist is freed from convention. Plans combines these multiplicate influences and blends Street Art with children’s book illustrations, creating an aesthetic that is wholly his own– spirited and emotive. Drawing from art historical knowledge and childhood experiences, influences such as Paul Klee, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring shine through body of work. At the age of 15, Plans spent two years in the studio of the Spanish illustrator José María Ramos, where he explored painting and drawing. Whilst sharing similar aesthetic attributes, it is Ramos’ skill at storytelling and portraying an instant narrative which is absorbed in Plans’ works. The culmination of their styles are reflected in the present work where the back wall scribbles of multi-eyed monsters, little houses and the Animal Heroes encompass the expression of mischief, joy and play- all elements central to Edgar Plans’ most celebrated works.

Leccíon de Anatomia (Anatomy Lesson) by Edgar Plans, painted on a black canvas, features a playful take on an anatomical lesson. The central figure is a simple, white-lined drawing of a skeletal form labelled ‘ANATOMIA’, bearing resemblance to the sketches found on classroom blackboards. Surrounding it are various whimsical elements: a skull, hand, and bike, all drawn with a child-like simplicity. The border of the canvas is adorned with colorful, candy-like dots that add a playful frame to the composition, reminiscent of the colorful and expressive nature of Plans’ ‘Animal Heroes’ series. Departing from his typical cartoon protagonists however, this work evokes the artist’s connection to the freedom of street art and urban creativity, blending education with a light-hearted, illustrative style.

Plans’ multidisciplinary works are heavily influenced by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Takashi Murakami. In particular, the current lot shares similarities with Basquiat’s practice. Its use of a black background draws attention to the use of color, and the raw, graffiti-like execution of drawings recall Basquiat’s street-art origins. The skeletal form is also a direct nod to Basquiat’s frequent use of anatomical diagrams and skeletal figures, while the use of words and symbols scattered across the canvas, along with the seemingly random placement of objects, echoes Basquiat’s complex, symbol-laden compositions. Both artists incorporate elements of social commentary and personal symbolism, often with a child-like simplicity and an element of depth beneath the surface.

The current work on paper, Hero or Villain, depicts the artist’s signature character along with references to other popular heroes in comic culture, such as X-men, Superman, Bruce Wayne (Batman) and the Joker. Plans often names his solo exhibitions “Art Notes”, as most of his works on paper, such as Hero or Villain, represent large format notebook sheets, where the artist invites the viewer to take a walk with him through his thoughts. The enlarged format elevates the content from simply being notes on paper, and envelops the viewer in his imaginary world. Despite their innocence and childlike appearance, Plans’ masked heroes were created with a more serious and noble intention of criticizing current social and environmental issues. Phrases found in the current work such as “Hero or Villain” (which is also the works title) and “Awaken the Hero you have inside!”, call out to the viewer urging them to stand up against the wrongdoing of others.
