Invader is a French urban artist known for his ceramic tile mosaics modeled on the pixelated art of 1970s–1980s 8-bit video games, many of which depict the titular aliens from the 1978 arcade game Space Invader (the inspiration for his pseudonym). As of December 2020, his creations can be seen in highly-visible locations in 79 cities in 33 countries. To accompany his citywide installations, or “Invasions”, Invader publishes books and maps as guides to the locations of his mosaics. Invader also makes mosaics using QR codes and stacks of Rubik’s Cubes (with the latter typically installed indoors).

The artist trained at the Paris School of Fine Arts delving into new technologies. His world originated in video games. Pixels soon became the name of the game. An avid reader of Art history, he undertook to revisit Cubism, hence Rubik Cubism.

SOURCE: INVADER’s WEBSITE

Since 2004 Invader started creating a series of works using cubes from the famous Rubik’s Cube game, setting his own creative style called Rubikcubism. Playing on the Cubist Art movement, Invader has created this series through a precise compositional procedure: the process starts with a computer, through which the desired subjects are virtually composed using only the six colors present on the Rubik’s cube; once the image is built, the cubes are manipulated accordingly in order to physically obtain the final image which will then be fixed on a support. Shifting the focus onto the typology of subjects represented by Invader, these follow with solid coherence an artistic thread that starts from afar, from the end of the 70s, a period in which the artist began to spread “like viruses” pixelated subjects taken from 8-bit videogames such as Space Invader, using ceramic tiles as his favorite medium. With a nod to the iconic object of the 1980s, but also to the pixels that make up our daily digital life today, the artist pays homage to classic works of art (Leonardo’s Mona Lisa, Manet’s Dejeuner sur l’Herbe) or to the emblematic figures dear to the creator. The subject chosen echoes the artist’s aspirations.
Defining his subjects as “perfect icons of our time, a time in which digital technologies are the heartbeat of our world”, Invader highlighted through his vast production the arrival of the technological wave that starting from the 70s has overturned the direction and rhythms of global events over the past two decades. While today with the spread of NFTs one can see how art is thriving in the digital realm, thus demonstrating how technology has been completely absorbed into the language of aesthetics, with Invader the creative process resulting from the union between art and technology is inverted: 8-bit video game subjects are stolen from technology and brought back to the physical world in new accessible environments. A constant obsession of Invader – expressed through the urbanization of his works – has in fact always been to bring art as close as possible to the public, in order to break down the historical and cultural barriers that have often surrounded museums and galleries. As a result of this tenacious approach to art, today 79 cities in 33 different countries bear the mark of Invader’s passage, now consecrated by important international museums around the world. By extending the reach of his street art to the maximum, Invader has given life to real artistic invasions, leaving traces of technology in a society that can no longer ignore the conditions dictated by it.

Rubik’s Cubes

Rubik’s cubes on Perspex panel

Using his original technique dubbed ‘Rubikcubism‘, Invader takes this fascination with nostalgia and mainstream culture further by using the Rubik’s Cube as a medium. The present work combines Invader’s instantly recognizable pixelated, pointillist style with one of the most iconic antiheroes from 1970’s American cinema – Travis Bickle from Martin Scorsese’s 1976 drama Taxi Driver. Through the careful and masterfully obsessive manipulation of the 330 Rubik’s Cubes, Invader forms the image of Bickle at the apex of his character. Invader’s street art is composed of tile mosaics, and depict characters from wildly popular retro arcade games such as Space Invaders and Pac-Man. However, for Invader’s studio works he expands the possibilities of pixelation by appropriating a popular image and converting small areas of the image from its native colours into exacting configurations of white, yellow, red, blue, orange, and green tiles on each corresponding Rubik’s Cube. The finished artwork simultaneously alludes to the Pointillist principles of Georges Seurat, as well as Picasso and Braques’ preoccupation with Cubism which occurred a century before this present work was created. Viewed up close, the present work appears as an abstract cacophony of colours; viewed from afar, however, the image of Bickle with his anarchic mohawk hairstyle materializes. The somewhat grainy and fragmented nature the individual tiles imbue the portrait with nostalgic memories of the filmmaking process. The speckles of white on the top left evoke flecks of overexposed 35mm film.

The subject matter reveals not only Invader’s interest in mainstream pop culture and nostalgia, but also hints at Invader’s humorous, satirical, even philosophical perspectives. The innocence of an iconic game is juxtaposed with the complex and internally tormented nature of Travis Bickle. The nigh infinite number of algorithmic configurations of the Rubik’s Cube mirrors the plurality of pop culture and its ubiquitous nature. In the late 2000’s, Invader reflected on spirituality as a theme; amongst the same series as the present work, one finds Rubikcubist portraits of the 14th Dalai Lama and Jesus. Travis Bickle, and by extension Robert De Niro who portrays Bickle, are iconified via Invader’s laborious yet reverent technique. Rubik Travis Bickle Mohican was exhibited at Invader’s first London exhibition London Invasion / Bad Men Part II at Lazarides Gallery in 2007 and has remained in the same private collection ever since. In direct contrast to the serene portraits of religious leaders and famous musicians, or reimagining of iconic masterpieces from the Western canon, the works from the Bad Men Part II series showcase the brazen attitude, grit, and omnipotent hold over the public’s attention of these antithetical characters. They point to Invader’s quick-witted and humorous qualities as the artist himself has remained anonymous, evading the authorities and the public life throughout his career. Through this choice of subject matter, methods of abstraction and the integration of a cult classic game as a material, Invader’s works are revolutionary and iconoclastic. Rubik Travis Bickle Mohican is an exceptional example of the street artist’s seamless foray into a unique and technically sophisticated series of studio works which rarely come to market.

It was when travelling in Nepal in 2008 that Invader invaded Kathmandu with mosaics giving rise to his world-wide reputation. To date, more than thirty countries, not to mention a hundred cities, have thus been invaded. An urban space conquest the apex of which materialized in a work of art placed in the space ship Ariane5 in 2015. At the foot of the Himalaya, the artist’s work attuned to the teachings of Buddhism. The latter infused the artist’s spiritual quest through meditation. This path led him to engage with the radiant figure of the Dalaï-Lama. Invader achieved the 400 Rubiks cubes’ composition in 2008, at his Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis) workshop in the North-eastern Paris suburbs. It is the largest format in the “good man” and “bad man” Series, initiated in 2005.

The subject chosen here echoes the artist’s aspirations. Feeling particularly close to Tibetan philosophy, Invader decided to represent the Dalai Lama after a trip to Nepal where he met Tibetan refugees. By depicting the Buddhist spiritual leader in his largest version, Invader invites us to contemplate from a new angle, following the example of Andy Warhol’s portraits of celebrities in the 1960s, an international figure that is both serious and pop, as well as quickly identifiable, even though he is scattered in 400 cubes. Pointillist in style, contemporary in purpose, with this work Invader pursues his reflection on the great images of our time, imposing his own urban and contemporary imprints. The art critic Alexia Guggémos bought the work from the artist himself in 2010. ‘The portrait of the Dalaï-Lama’ with 400 Rubiks cubes is part of her personal collection, the Museum of Smiles, founded in 1996 and first online museum in the world. “Invader’s finest conquest is that of the smile », she revealed, the work proper is an encapsulation of the Buddhist cosmology of the three Realms: the Desire Realm (kama-loka), the Form Realm (rupa-loka), and the Formless Realm (arupya-loka)”.

Through Rubik Blind Faith, whose subject is taken from the homonymous album by Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Ric Grech, we not only retrace the process of rubikcubist creation but we perceive also the underlying meaning, that is the decomposition of an object that is firmly rooted in the collective imagery and that has now been completely historicized, and its recompositing, both physical and conceptual, in new and unexpected places under innovative and diverse forms.

Defining his subjects as “perfect icons of our time, a time in which digital technologies are the heartbeat of our world”, Invader highlighted through his vast production the arrival of the technological wave that starting from the 70s has overturned the direction and rhythms of global events over the past two decades.

An Alias is a replica of an original work installed on the streets. The only twist is instead of concrete walls, the mosaics are applied on a type of plastic called perspex. They all come with a signed certificate of authenticity and are designed to be sold on the art market. These Aliases capture the essence of street art and bring them to collectors and fans worldwide.

Each piece in the collection is created from Invader’s Global Space Invasion Project, making his creations accessible to all his ardent fans. Some say the artist creates an Alias each time he places a new piece. However, this is unrealistic due to the immense work needed to replicate every single mosaic. Therefore, it is certain that not every mosaic gets an Alias. Only those who make it through Invader’s selection have an Alias created.
It is crystal clear that these Aliases are of higher quality than the ones installed in public, as they are not subject to erosion and wear and tear from the environment. Despite this, they are still copies rather than the original work.

“Back in the 1990s, the first computers were coming to market. One of my friends was a real geek and he made me buy a computer, a Macintosh IIfx. I started to spend all my nights on this machine exploring that new world. […] Little by little, this digital aesthetic became familiar to me, and I wanted to use it in my art. I made a series of prints and paintings representing pixels, and then began to use tiles“

Executed in 2015, Invader’s Bruce Lee commands attention with this life-sized portrayal of Bruce Lee. Rendered in Invader’s signature style, the pixelated figure is crystalized in the iconic Bruce Lee pose. Despite its pixelated form, Lee’s likeness is indisputable, a testament to the strength of his image as a cultural icon. Combining the iconic imagery of Bruce Lee with the pixelated aesthetic of classic 80s video games, the present work captivates the viewer with its fusion of pop culture and contemporary art. Invader’s intuitive approach to street art, not only pays homage to pioneers of video game design but also subverts traditional notions of artistry and craftmanship. Invader’s work is forward thinking with the artist believing that ‘street art is becoming the most important art movement of the 21st century’ this work contemplates the intersections of art, culture, and technology. Originally executed for an urban exhibition Wipe Out in Hong Kong, Invader explains that he often works alongside local craftsman and takes inspiration from local culture. His work acts as a ‘new way of communicating with different cityscapes, different audiences and of course to research and understand the locale.’ An integral element to Invader’s work is the decision to install his works in public spaces, directly confronting established conventions around the presentation and definition of so-called ‘high-art’. Invader currently has 3,960 murals in situ across 79 cities and 6 continents, the artist describing his oeuvre as ‘an endless project’ attempting to redefine the future of art.
