Amour Pour Toujours (French for “Love Forever”), is a comprehensive collection of screenprints that captures Yayoi Kusama’s signature motifs in a vibrant and accessible format. The complete portfolio of 10 prints was published by FMR Trading Limited in Osaka, Japan, in an edition of 60.

Introduction

Published as a portfolio in 2000, Amour Pour Toujours comprises 10 screen-prints in bold colors, accompanied in the original portfolio by a poem written by Alain Jouffroy in French. The prints gather five of the artist’s most iconic motifs: butterflies, hats, pumpkins, flowers, and fruit baskets. Each motif is featured in two prints in two different colorways.
Pumpkins (Citrouille): Two prints, Citrouille I and Citrouille II, feature the artist’s iconic polka-dotted pumpkins.
Flowers (Tulipe): Two prints, Tulipe I and Tulipe II, depict tulips rendered in her bold, repetitive style.
Butterflies (Papillon): Two prints, Papillon I and Papillon II, feature polka-dotted butterflies.
Hats (Chapeau): Two prints, Chapeau I and Chapeau II, show a hat motif.
Fruit Baskets (Panier De Fruits): Two prints, Panier De Fruits I and Panier De Fruits II, focus on fruit baskets.
The entire set is presented in a specially crafted, handmade portfolio case made of embossed red leather and paper and signed by the artist. The portfolio was released in 2000, during a period of renewed mainstream and international acclaim for Kusama, who had returned to Japan in the 1970s and had been living voluntarily in a psychiatric hospital since 1977. It represents a culmination of decades of her artistic development, bringing together her core themes in a single collection.

The themes explored in Amour pour Toujours are an expression of Kusama’s life and her obsessive-compulsive neuroses. The repetitive, hallucinatory patterns, like the polka dots, are a physical representation of the idea of infinity and her attempt to visualize her inner world. The portfolio, with its “notable joie de vivre,” embodies Kusama’s peaceful and self-actualized attitude toward life. It uses everyday objects as symbols within a “vast, enlightened spirituality,” celebrating the mundane while connecting it to larger existential realities. The title itself, Amour pour Toujours (“Love forever”), suggests a sense of enduring connection and meaning.

While Yayoi Kusama’s art is often characterized by the use of two highly contrasting colors, with either black, yellow, or red together with white, in Amour Pour Toujours, the artist explores a larger color palette of 6 colors per print resulting in very bold visuals.
