Andy Warhol’s final major portfolio Cowboys and Indians is truly a tour de force. Showcasing the artist’s fascination with pop culture, his appreciation of Indigenous art, and his almost prophetic, insight into the depths of the American imaginary, Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians remains an extraordinary series in the later part of Warhol’s career.

Introduction
With vivid color and thought-provoking juxtaposed images of U.S. Americana and Indigenous peoples’ culture, Warhol offers a new view of the frontier—one of centering performances, public opinion, and difficult historical exchanges. Looking beyond the prints to Warhol’s source imagery reveals an immense level of depth and consideration from the artist. Upon publication of the edition in 1986, a complete set of Cowboys and Indians was donated to the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian.
In 1984, when Warhol embarked upon the project of creating Cowboys and Indians with the publishers Edmund Gaultney and Kent Klineman, he did not realize that the project would require two years of work involving battles over the content with the publishers and continual delays. Contract negotiations for the series were ongoing into 1985 and, when the dust settled, one of the unique provisions of the contract was that Gaultney and Klineman had final approval of all images in the suite. This seemingly small provision led to an unusually drawn-out production process whereby Warhol and his printer, Rupert Jasen Smith, created images of multiple subjects and an array of trial proofs where they would experiment with color and composition until they landed on an image that Gaultney and Klineman approved.

In the end, there were 10 images published in the regular portfolio (John Wayne, Annie Oakley, General Custer, Northwest Coast Mask, Kachina Dolls, Plains Indian Shield, Mother and Child, Geronimo, Indian Head Nickel, and Teddy Roosevelt). These final images hearken back to Warhol’s days as a portrait artist and his prints that utilize his polaroids as subject matter. It is only when you look at the proofs for the rejected images that it is possible to fully see Warhol’s intended artistic vision as it developed between 1984 and1986, unimpeded by the external demands of his publishers.
The series mixes iconic Hollywood figures and historical personalities with Native American artifacts:
- “Cowboys”: John Wayne, Annie Oakley, General Custer, Teddy Roosevelt
- “Indians” / Native American Imagery: Geronimo, Kachina Dolls, Plains Indian Shield, Northwest Coast Mask, Indian Head Nickel, Mother and Child.
Warhol’s signature Pop Art aesthetic, featuring vibrant, bold colors, stark outlines, and the use of repetition and silkscreen printing based on found photographic source material.

The series functions as a cultural commentary on the construction of the American West’s history and mythology:
- Myth vs. Reality: Warhol questions the romanticized and often inaccurate version of the “Wild West” perpetuated by Hollywood and popular culture. By pairing real historical figures (Geronimo, Custer) with mass media interpretations (John Wayne, Annie Oakley), he highlights how the West has been packaged and consumed as a myth.
- Iconography of the West: The works explore the concept of the American “icon,” contrasting figures of power and celebrity (Cowboys, Generals, Entertainers) with less familiar Native American figures and sacred objects.
- Media and Stereotypes: By filtering the subjects through his silkscreen technique, Warhol suggests how mass media and commercial imagery (from film stills, postcards, and old photographs) shape collective memory and perpetuate stereotypes about Native Americans. He subtly challenges these stereotypes by using an archival photo of the real Geronimo, for example, rather than a caricature.
- Appropriation and Commodification: The inclusion of actual Native American artifacts (like the Kachina Dolls and shield—based on photos Warhol took at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian) draws attention to the exploitation and commodification of Indigenous culture and sacred objects.
The series reflects Warhol’s long-standing fascination with the Western genre and Americana, dating back to his earlier works and his experimental 1968 film, Lonesome Cowboys. Created in the mid-1980s, the work is a late example of his engagement with American identity and cultural critique through the lens of Pop Art.
