Andy Warhol’s long documented fascination with Hollywood began at an early age. Growing up, Warhol would send away for autographs and pour over fan magazines. One of the most important keepsakes Warhol kept all his life was a portrait of Shirley Temple inscribed ‘To Andrew Warhola from Shirley Temple.”

Sidewalk depicts the handprints and signatures of classic film stars embedded in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It transforms a section of the real Hollywood monument, specifically the area in front of what was then Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, into a Pop Art image. It features the handprints and autographs of four celebrities: Cary Grant,
Judy Garland (with the inscription “For Mr Grauman, All Happiness”), Jack Nicholson, and Shirley Temple. Warhol used an even application of color, often in a rose or pink tint for the concrete, with the impressions appearing in pale relief, which gives the image a glowing, somewhat nostalgic quality.

Sidewalk explores the nature of celebrity worship and how fame is immortalized in American culture. Warhol, who was obsessed with celebrity culture since childhood, was drawn to the physical, tangible imprints (autographs, handprints) as remnants of stardom, without actually using a portrait of the person. This print plays on the idea that these icons are preserved as both a myth and monument, while simultaneously highlighting the irony that people literally walk all over these symbols of fame every day.

Sidewalk was released in 1983 as part of a collaborative portfolio titled Eight by Eight to Celebrate the Temporary Contemporary. The portfolio featured works by eight different artists and was produced to raise funds for the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles. The subject matter was a fitting choice, aligning the new museum with Los Angeles’s iconic celebrity culture.
