The Growing Suite features some of Haring’s most iconic humanoid figures. It also displays captivating visual experimentation not seen in some of the artist’s earlier works. Haring uses his signature ‘energy lines’ to depict groups of figures merging their energies, reflecting his faith in collective action. Five years after his first silkscreens, these prints showed off his natural talent for the medium.

Introduction

Growing is a suite of five vibrant screenprints that uses interconnected figures and bold lines to symbolize themes of unity, social progress, and the celebration of life. Released the same year Haring was diagnosed with HIV, the work is imbued with a sense of urgency and optimism. They all feature Haring’s signature style: thick black outlines, bold, flat, saturated primary colors, and dynamic, cartoon-like human figures.

The works from Growing all depict humanoid figures in various stages of motion and transformation, often merging into larger, complex structures that resemble trees of life or human pyramids (“people ladders”). These figures are faceless and universal, intentionally removing distinctions of race, gender, or class. Haring’s characteristic “energy lines” are used to convey movement, vitality, and a pulsating energy throughout the compositions. For example, Growing #1 shows a tower of figures supporting a smaller, haloed figure (reminiscent of the Radiant Baby) at the top, representing joint effort and community support. Whereas Growing #2 depicts figures emerging from a larger central figure in a grid-like pattern, symbolizing collective identity and unity. Later plates feature more abstract compositions, including glowing holes that some interpret as representing an emptiness in the collective human core, or a critique of divisive institutions.

The central meaning of the Growing series is a hopeful vision of togetherness and collective action in the face of division and adversity. By showing figures literally growing together and morphing into one another, Haring emphasized the power of community and the breaking down of societal barriers. The imagery of growth (tree-like figures, caterpillar to butterfly analogies) reflects Haring’s belief in personal and societal progress and the potential for positive change. The series was created during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and amidst other socio-political issues of the 1980s (e.g., apartheid, nuclear war threat). Despite the somber context, the works are filled with vibrant colors and joyful movement, serving as a form of art activism that promotes optimism and the celebration of life.

The portfolio was published in 1988 by Martin Lawrence Limited Editions, New York. This was a highly prolific period for Haring, but also one of profound personal urgency, as he had been diagnosed with HIV that same year and died two years later in 1990. The series, with its powerful message of unity and resilience, stands as a testament to Haring’s enduring legacy and his use of art as a platform for social change until the very end of his life.

“Because the hand is central to Keith’s process, his work comes right out of his body.”

Jeffrey Deitch

That Haring so readily adapted his inherently intimate medium, drawing, for purposes of reproduction is integral to his particular genius and legacy. “Whatever [Haring] carried out, he tended towards swift dissemination, duplication and ubiquitous application,” Werner Jehle wrote in his introduction to Keith Haring: Editions on Paper 1982-1990. While such “ubiquity” may for some preclude Haring from an academicized art historical canon, it is arguably his embrace of an inclusive, pluralistic vision of humanity that imbues his work with so much power. Deitch nods to Haring’s deliberate universality, offering “[Haring] is one of the primary links between hip hop from the South Bronx, gay dance club culture, the conceptual art culture of the Lower East Side, and street art culture. He put all these things together. In his lifestyle and his circle, and, obviously, in his art.” As a microcosm of Haring’s career and life, Growing Suite offers an exuberant and swiftly communicated message of human interconnectedness.

Auction Market Overview

Prints from Growing are some of the most sought-after prints at auction, not only because they are very fine example of the artist’s work at maturity, but also because Keith Haring released Trial Proofs with unique color combinations, same as Warhol did for most of his prints series. Those unique prints command high prices at auction.

Growing #1

Growing #1 features an image of a ‘People Ladder’, one of Haring’s most recognizable motifs, representing a tower of 1980s break-dancers stacked on top of one another. Haring uses thick bold lines and flat saturated colors to produce an image that bursts with energy and vigor.

Haring was concerned with the idea of the democratization of art and uses his positive visual language as a form of activism to raise awareness around important socio-political issues of the 1980s. The depiction of conjoined figures in the Growing series evokes a sense of community and the power of working together in a capitalist society where the idea of the individual is prioritized over society as a whole. Growing 1 shows multiple figures stemming from the single individual to represent the way in which Haring sees a collaborative society that is freed from the constraining categories and divisions between gender, class, race and sexuality. Haring’s use of strong lines provides the print with movement as though the figures are dancing. The dancing figures clearly convey a sense of joy and community in a way that reflected the artist’s love of hip hop emerging in New York City in the 1980s.

Growing #2

Growing #2 shows a brightly colored image of a number of stick figures conjoined and stemming from a single, central figure. The composition develops organically outwards and resembles the shape of a tree, the central figure acting as a trunk and limbs of the bodies like branches.

Haring was passionate about the democratization of art and used his positive visual language as a form of activism to raise awareness around important socio-political issues of the 1980s. The depiction of conjoined figures in the Growing series subverts the prioritization of the individual in capitalist society and instead evokes a sense of community and the power of working together. Like much of Haring’s later works, this print strikes a balance between pattern and figuration in such a way that it recalls the art of Australian Aborigines. Vibrant in its use of flat, contrasting colors, Haring produces a sense of rhythmic surface pattern in Growing 2. Notably, the figures appear as though break dancing, reflecting the artist’s love of 1980s hip hop and something that Haring became very interested in as a means to communicate joy and togetherness.

Growing #3

Growing #3 shows a symmetrical image of four figures interconnected and conjoined by the torso of the central figure. Haring depicts these figures in black and contours the subject in blue, rounded outlines, setting the image against a vivid red backdrop. Typical of Haring’s figurative style, rounded lines are used to create a sense of energy and movement in the print, as though these figures are dancing or working with one another.

Haring’s print strikes a balance between pattern and figuration in such a way that it recalls the art of Australian Aborigines, something that the artist claimed to be unaware of. This sense of pattern across the image surface is emphasized by the symmetrical composition and the way in which Haring fits the figures together in a complex interconnected system. The use of flat, contrasting colors also further emphasizes the abstract surface pattern of the image, with the bright yellow circles as the focal point from which the pattern emerges. Showing a number of figures stemming from the single individual in a complex interconnected system, Haring makes his point that working together and forming community can be more powerful than working alone. The figures in Growing 3 could also be seen to be break dancing, something that Haring became very interested in as a means to communicate joy and togetherness.

Growing #4

Growing 4 shows two figures conjoined at the hip by a target symbol in the center of the image, depicted in rounded yellow lines against a black backdrop. There is a clear focus on pattern across the entire image and the symmetry of the composition organically develops outwards from the center. As the Growing Series progresses, it is unclear where some figures begin and end as Haring’s compositions become more complex and interconnected.

Haring’s use of symmetry along a vertical central axis and abundance of form marks a clear affinity with Australian Aboriginal and Aztec art. Across the image Haring creates concentric circles, curving, organic lines, figures and small patterns, bringing them into an abstract pictorial system that moves and flows with the viewer’s eye. Indeed, Haring’s focus on pattern makes this work distinctly ‘primitive’ in both a technical and stylistic sense, much like that of the European Modernists like Klee and Matisse. Growing 4 evokes a clear sense of collectivism, working together and positive energy as a means to make a political statement on the culture of individualism in 1980s capitalist America. The figures seem to dance across the page, moving against complex patterns, providing the image with a rhythmic character that sparks joy in the viewer.

Growing #5

Striking in its use of bright color and bold shapes, Growing #5 shows an unusual arrangement of figures. Unlike other works in the series, the image is symmetrical in composition, showing two central figures with their arms outstretched and a figure on either side with their bodies bent over inwards, hiding their heads.

A sense of pattern is created by Haring in this print through his use of angular lines and flattened picture plane. Growing 5 makes clear the way in which Haring’s work appeals to both children and adults alike, using a limited palette of four vivid colors (red, blue, yellow and green) and simplified shapes that interlock with one another. Haring’s figures in this print are conjoined and flow into one another so as to emphasize a sense of community and the power of working together. Haring’s use of symmetry along a vertical central axis and abundance of form marks a clear affinity with Australian Aboriginal and Aztec art. Across the image Haring uses concentric circles, curving, organic lines, figures and zig zags, to create an abstract pictorial system that moves and flows with the viewer’s eye. Indeed, Haring’s focus on pattern makes this work distinctly ‘primitive’, much like that of the European Modernists like Klee and Matisse.
