The Fertility Suite highlighted the prevalence of HIV infection among pregnant women in Sub-Saharan Africa, an issue that was largely suppressed due to the homophobia and racism shaping narratives. The series celebrates these mothers’ strength by including ankh crosses, glowing pregnant women, and dancing. Not one to shy away from taboo topics, Haring’s Fertility celebrates life yet also the injustices of racism and the horrors of AIDS in pregnant women Rendered in the artist’s trademark visual language of bold colors, thick outlines and simplified form, this glowing and otherworldly series speaks out against the injustices of racism, homophobia, and the high prevalence of HIV infection among pregnant women in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 1980s, notably the transmission of the virus from mother to child. Across the five prints in Fertility Suite, Haring shows a set of recognizable, clear-cut motifs that translate into a complex narrative that celebrates fertility and life, whilst also highlighting the horrors faced by pregnant women living with HIV/AIDS. Haring uses the symbol of the pregnant figures dancing in energetic bodily motions as a recurring theme throughout Fertility, making the series one of Haring’s most powerful tributes to womanhood. Additionally, the prints include many other trademark symbols by Haring such as the Radiant Baby, the pyramid and UFOs, working to make this series an archetypal example of the artist’s style.

Formally the works are defined by their use of neon colors that are reminiscent of the New York club scene, initially perceived by the viewer as joyful images. Haring uses contrasting day-glow pigments such as yellow, pink, green, red and purple against sections of black, providing the series with an exceptionally bright visual language that appeals to adults and children alike.

Fertility #1

Fertility 1 uses the artist’s trademark visual language of bold colors and simplified form to depict pregnant women dancing in energetic bodily motions that recall African fertility dances. Four pregnant figures are shown dancing on a dotted landscape, and Haring shows his trademark radiant baby symbol as the print’s centerpiece to reflect this idea of celebrating fertility and life.

Haring was fascinated with babies and pregnant women and used these motifs throughout his work to represent “the purest and most positive experience of human existence” and as a symbol of hope for the future. Through the use of jarring neon colors and agitated moving figures, Haring injects tension and anxiety to this otherwise positive subject matter. Furthermore, Haring uses dotted lines and circles in this series to allude to the lesions of people with HIV/AIDS and the threat this poses to pregnant women.

Fertility #2

Fertility 2‘s central subject is a brightly colored and spotted ancient Egyptian pyramid, a common motif in Haring’s work that symbolized both antiquity and eternity. Haring’s allusion to the mysteries of ancient civilization are juxtaposed with the imagination of extraterrestrial civilization through the depiction of UFOs that have come to represent positive energy and empowerment to those who are situated outside of accepted social norms.

Haring’s use of dashes, dots and large spots are used to allude to the lesions of people who live with HIV/AIDS. This landscape is seemingly overwhelmed by the disease and threatens the pregnant figure in the bottom left-hand corner, whilst the unaffected UFOs attack the sacred monument in the center. Haring was a prominent HIV/AIDS activist and Fertility 2 represents the saving of children and humanity from the horrors of illness and inactive leadership.

Fertility #3

Along with other works in the series, Fertility 3 shows Haring’s fascination with babies and pregnant women, using the pregnant figure as an oversized central subject that works as a symbol of sacredness and hope for the future.

However, through the use of jarring neon colors and agitated moving figures, Haring injects tension and anxiety to the otherworldly image. Furthermore, Haring uses dotted lines and circles on the body of the central figure to allude to the lesions of people with HIV/AIDS and the threat this poses to pregnant women.

Fertility #4

Fertility 4 shows a bright pink figure covered in yellow dashes squatting in the center of the work, with its arms around two pregnant figures shown in black and outlined in neon yellow. Due to the dashes on the figure’s body the central figure represents HIV/AIDS in this print and has a threatening presence. However, Haring includes an ankh cross, the Egyptian hieroglyphic for ‘life’ at the center of the figure’s stomach, thus presenting the paradox between the celebration of life and living with HIV/AIDS.

Though trapped by the grasp of the menacing central figure, the two pregnant figures can be seen high-fiving and dancing, emphasized by Haring’s use of bold rounded lines to cultivate a sense of energy and movement. The resulting image celebrates the fertility of the pregnant figures, underscored by the presence of Haring’s radiant baby symbol in the bottom right corner, as well as a caution to the perils of HIV/AIDS and how it affected pregnant women and their children in certain parts of Africa throughout the 1980s.

Fertility #5

In Fertility 5, Haring shows the central figure levitating above the landscape and pregnant figures below, with a zig-zag torso and an ankh-shaped hole in its stomach. As with other prints in the series, this figure symbolizes the ominous presence of HIV/AIDS in the world that Haring depicts. The five pregnant figures across the bottom of the image wave their arms in the air and it is ambiguous as to whether they are dancing or agitating their arms in distress, attempting to be rescued from the monstrous figure above. This sense of ambiguity is typical of Haring in his depiction of dark subject matter through positive and vibrant symbols.

Fertility 5 uses some of Haring’s most recognizable symbols, dotted and pregnant figures, holes in the stomach, and bold, rounded lines to evoke a sense of movement in the image. The suite is an early screen print by Haring that represents the significance of his work to HIV/AIDS activism through unique symbols that are widely recognized and understood by the public.
