Originally created for The Popular Image Exhibition organized by Alice Denney at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art, Washington D.C. (18 April – 2 June 1963), the purpose for these record sleeves was to house the recordings of interviews conducted by Billy Kluver with all of the eleven artists featured in the exhibition. While ultimately the cover created by Jim Dine was used for the exhibition itself, Andy Warhol’s contribution, $1.57 Giant Size are vibrant examples of Warhol’s exploration of media and probing into the definition of fine art.
Andy Warhol envisioned the record cover as a means to popularize his name as an artist and, once he reached iconic status in the 1960s, used it to directly impact popular culture. The artist created a variety of iconic album covers which continue to resonate in Contemporary society today for top artists such as The Rolling Stones for their albums Sticky Fingers and Love you Live, The Velvet Underground and myriad others include John Lennon, Aretha Franklin, Paul Anka, Diana Ross and Liza Minelli.
