Released in 2010, Snoopy (Joe KAWS) marks one of the most iconic collaborations in KAWS’ practice, merging his visual language with one of the most recognizable characters in popular culture. Drawing from Snoopy, originally created by Charles M. Schulz, the work exemplifies KAWS’ longstanding strategy of reinterpreting established cultural icons through subtle yet decisive interventions. Rather than transforming the character beyond recognition, KAWS introduces minimal but highly effective modifications, demonstrating how slight alterations can shift meaning entirely.
The figure presents Snoopy standing upright in a neutral, frontal position, wearing a yellow T-shirt inscribed with “JOE KAWS.” The character retains its familiar proportions and simplified anatomy, preserving its immediate recognizability. KAWS’ intervention is concentrated and precise. The most striking modification lies in the addition of black sunglasses marked with his signature X-eyes, effectively replacing Snoopy’s expressive gaze with a coded, impersonal sign.
This gesture transforms the character. The playful, introspective personality traditionally associated with Snoopy is replaced by a more detached, stylized presence. The figure no longer communicates emotion—it embodies a visual identity. The T-shirt further reinforces this shift. The inscription “JOE KAWS” functions as both a playful alteration and a declaration of authorship, collapsing the boundary between original character and artistic reinterpretation.
Executed in painted cast vinyl and produced by Medicom Toy in collaboration with OriginalFake, the work maintains the high level of finish and precision characteristic of KAWS’ editions. The surface is smooth and uniform, with clean transitions between colors, emphasizing the graphic clarity of the form. The figure is produced in an edition of 500, reinforcing its status as a limited collectible within KAWS’ broader body of work. Stamped and impressed markings to the underside confirm its production details, anchoring the work within the artist’s established edition system.

Snoopy (Joe KAWS) emerges within a broader period in which KAWS actively engaged with globally recognized characters, including reinterpretations of figures from animation and comics.
The collaboration with the Peanuts universe represents a particularly significant moment, given the cultural weight and historical legacy of Schulz’s creation. Rather than parodying or distorting the character, KAWS adopts a strategy of minimal disruption—allowing the tension between familiarity and alteration to define the work.
Produced during the years of OriginalFake, KAWS’ now-defunct brand and retail platform, the piece also reflects a moment when the artist was actively exploring the intersection of art, design, and consumer culture.
At its core, Snoopy (Joe KAWS) is about authorship and identity.
By applying his signature X-eyes and inserting his name into the composition, KAWS effectively overlays his own visual language onto an existing cultural figure. The result is not a hybrid, but a controlled replacement—the original identity remains visible, yet is subtly overridden. The sunglasses play a critical role. They conceal the character’s eyes, removing emotional access while introducing a layer of stylization. The figure becomes less a character and more a symbol—recognizable, yet distanced. This tension between preservation and transformation lies at the center of KAWS’ practice. The work does not reject its source—it reclaims it.

As one of KAWS’ most recognizable collaborations, Snoopy (Joe KAWS) holds a strong position within the market for his early edition works. Its limited edition size, combined with the enduring popularity of the Peanuts franchise, contributes to sustained collector demand. More broadly, the piece exemplifies a key aspect of KAWS’ legacy: his ability to engage directly with mass culture while maintaining a distinct and controlled artistic identity. Here, the intervention is minimal—but decisive. A pair of X-eyes is enough to shift an entire cultural icon.
